All,

Just pre-ordered the orange box for Episode 2 and Portal and while I am waiting for Wednesday I thought I would have a go on Team Fortress 2.

What the hell is going on?

I have never played the original and my online gaming only consists of a few rounds of deathmatch after completing games like Medal of Honour, Call of Duty and HL2, but I get bored of online very quickly and never got into it at all.

I have to say that in the couple of hours I gave it last night I was enjoying it, I played mostly as a medic and joined up with a heavy for some good teamwork.

Does anyone know of any game guides or simple info on the game and characters? Usually for that sort of thing I would look on gamespot but they have nothing. I know that the game isn't technically out yet but any help would be appreciated.

cp_map_name-cature points, aim of that game is to cature points on the map or defend them.

map_name_ctf-capture the flag, capture the enemies intel briefcase and defend your own.

that's basically it i think :)

I'm rather unsure what it is your asking here.... ? You get the objectives of the round and abilities of the character?

TF2 is a great fun fun fun game which is great for teamworking and cooperative play! enjoying playing every class as present particularly the scout on the fort2fort map and trying to outsmart the engineers etc... class entertainment. :)

Can be very confusing i agree, what you want to do, is find someone who has it and chat on teamspeak to them. Then they will describe what you should be doing and when as you both play.

TF2 is just one of those games... You have to mindlessly play for a few hours before you realize whats going on. It doesn't take long till' you find which characters suit you. Each character has its strengths on each of the maps.

I found the learning curve to be pretty small, I'd consider myself alrite-ish at it now. If only it wasn't for those pesky spies! :p

Njoy Fragin' !

I jut read through a bit of background on wikipedia and appreciate it a bit mroe now.

I understand the objectives and whatnot, it is pretty straightforward as you said but it was just bedlam when I started last night with some games only lasting a minute. You just didn't have time to think.

I could see that with evenly matched teams it would be a lot of fun.

I was just confused about the characters - nine characters each with 3 or so weapons and skills is a lot to take in!

Will have a read of the guide suggested above and have another play tonight.

You'll find that most players usually end up specialising in a couple of classes. At least that's what I found with the original QuakeWorld version of Team Fortress.

Looking back, the best bit was using each class one by one, seeing the differences - while trying to learn the maps (and even help my team!) Although at the time it didn't seem so hot.

Hm, never noticed that - must have been to eager to press find games. Thanks!

Your welcome mate, I found them quite interesting, you can see Valve put a lot into this game, originally during development it was very realistic (a bit like CS:Source) but they didn't like it and basically re-made everything.

Small config/Autoexec here if any 1 wants it, mainly for the voice binds :)

lol why would u have the spacebar to suicide urself?

classes:

Scout: float like a butterfly sting like a bee... the scouts scatter shotgun is very good at close range and can even kill a heavy with a couple of point blank shots to the back of the head... can double jump to get to unreachable areas and to evade your opponents.. never stop jumping around like a mad man

Soldier: standard guy, got a rocket launcher which while a bit slow does decent damage... aim at your opponents feet if they are moving so u at least hit them with the splash damage.

Pyro: very good at short range since the patch, useless at long range, hide indoors somewhere around a corner where u canot be seen and jump out on your enemies to be most effective

Heavy: most ppl dont realise the minigun is pretty lame at long range, get in close... and make sure to make friends with all the medics on ** team :)

Demoman: dont much care for this class myself but ppl like him... remote mines are good for killing anyone that makes it to the cp or defending a bottleneck.. main weapon is good for spamming grenades into an area to soften your opponent... have no close combat weapon other than the melee weapon so if they get close your pretty much screwed

engineer: the standard shotgun does well at close range, but most of your kills will come from your sentry guns... good at close-mid range although soldiers can outrange them with rockets.... also builds teleporters to move troops around quickly and dispensers to give out ammo and health as well as more metal for you to build with

sniper: pretty standard sniper... get yourself a nice line of sight and shoot ppl from far away, your bullets do more damage the longer ** zoomed, and as standard headshots are better

spy: the most complicated class to play but a very fun one... u have a pistol but you wont use this very much, most of your kills will be backstabs.... disguise yourself as your enemy... cloak yourself so your not obviously seen runnning with your teammates... when your out of eyesight uncloak, do your best impression of someone not trying to stab ppl... and then stab them in the back! :D can also sap machines (sentry guns and stuff) which is great to cause havoc and make your teams life easier when attacking a heavily defended place

hope this helps :D

Appreciate the detail there DJammy!

Have to say I played again last night almost exclusively as a medic, you can rack up good scores by helping people and occasionally kill a few with the old syringe gun!

A few quick questions if you don't mind.

Is there team damage? I reckon not as a few people seem to attack players on occasion, also what about Demoman's genades?

How do teleporters work?

Is it easy to bind keys to say standard things? EG as medic saying that I have ubercharge would be useful so the guy I am with will actually move rather than wasting the charge?

Thanks for any more advice.

Team damage is set by the server - it's off by default, and in the final game there won't even the option to turn it on, so you can shoot your teammates as much as you like with no worries.

Teleporters are built by engineers - they build an entrance and an exit, and once both are built they can be used by players to shortcut the distance between spawn and objective. They take a few seconds to charge up between uses.

Have a look at Kezmo's binds above - there's some good examples there of what's possible. The medic one is alias "v_uberready" "voicemenu 1 7", then you bind v_uberready to whatever key you like.
