hehehe this is my point... while the sniper might not be useless, and might be able to occasionally get quite a respectable kill count on 2fort it doesn't add anything to the team...
Couldn't disagree more. A good sniper is invaluable at certain points of most maps. There are many choke points that can be hard to win back with the constand 'bashing' approach. Add one or two snipers to your team and you can use them to greatly weaken the opposition, while the rest of your team work to claim the area back.
As has been said, snipers are a support class, they aren't there to cause huge amounts of damage to several players at once (like the heavy, soldier or demoman). They are they to make strategical dents in the opposition's attack/defence. A sniper can take out a heavy far quicker than any other player type.
3/4 of the time snipers only kill other snipers sat in 2 points not really defending anywhere important... not actually attacking a point.. just shootin each other
But again, this is usually to make sure the opposition snipers aren't free to take out the more offensive players in your team. Sure you get some idiots who just sit back and snipe and contribute very little to the team, but you get that with pretty much every class.
Snipers are incredibly handy at clearing a path for your teammates to get in close without them taking much damage. A lot of the time this does involve taking down the opposition snipers. But that's part of the game. If you don't try and cancel out the opposition, then they will get a big advantage from it.
a total waste of time... give me 2 soldiers and a medic over 10 snipers any day
Again I think you miss the point. A team of 10 snipers is as usless as a team of 10 medic's, or a team of 10 heavy's. Of course you'd take 2 soldiers and a medic over 10 snipers, because 10 snipers offers almost no benefit over 2 snipers.
The best teams are the ones that have a mix of classes.
As for pinning down an entire team this is not ww2... u might kill the first guy around the corner... but the rest of the team wont fall back, they wont hide.. they will rush u and make u their *****
Again you miss the point. The sniper isn't there to hold back an attack himself. He's there to cause key damage to strategical areas of the opposition attack/defence.
In most situations a sniper shouldn't be trying to hold an area on his own. He needs to be accompanied by teamamtes.
For example if a team is attacking with a heavy, a couple of pyro's and some scouts, then a sniper will have no chance on his own. The pyro's and scouts will rush him and at best he might take out one or two of them. However, if he has team mates in front of him, then they can mop up the pyro's and the scouts. The sniper would be there to pick off the heavy first and foremost in this situation imo.
