TF2 = Connection problem...Connection problem...lag...lag...Connection problem...lag

Any of you guys still having problems with this game? Apparently it doesn't play nice with a lot of Speedtouch routers (this includes the the BT Home Hub, for everyone who's using it) and there's a very good fix I found when browsing the Steam FAQs. Let me know if you want me to post the fix and I will, but I can't right now as I have to be up pretty early tomorrow (today, in fact).

Seems a lot better at the moment...

I'd be interested in seeing that 'fix' anyway though!

I have a similar problem, lag/low fps for perhaps the first 30-60 seconds everytime I join a server, almost as if my laptop needs to 'get used' to the game before working properly. Strange

The only pings I seem to be able to get are in the 80 to 100 range. I've never really done much playing online before so I have no idea if this is average or bad. I get the occasional stutter but it usually perfectly playable. I'm on the basic sky broadband, as my housemates are tight. :p

PK!

Mine has been much better since I last posted in this thread. Pretty much no problems, and nothing likely to be caused by the game :)

I used to find that the framerate made it look really jerky when a map loads for about that length of time. Interestingly it doesn't seem to happen to me anymore since the update that happened before my last post in the thread. Dunno if that's related :s

80-100 is playable but a bit on the high side. Could be down to a number of things though, eg distance to server, other people using your connection etc. If your housemates are tight they're probably downloading stuff all the time :p

Okay. The fix is the same for both Vista and XP users, except the former must first carry out an extra stage.

Vista Users
Open the Command Prompt and type:
start /w pkgmgr /iu:"TelnetClient"
Press Return.

Type:
Press Return.
This will install a Telnet application which is optional in Vista, but it's already present on XP.

Vista and XP Users
From here on the instructions are the same for both operating systems.

Open the Command Prompt and type:
Telnet 192.168.1.254
You will then be prompted to login to the modem with a username and password. The default is one of the following:
Username: Administrator
Password: None (leave this field blank)

Username: admin
Password: admin
The second option worked for me.

Press Return after typing the username and again after the password.

Once you've logged in, you will be presented with the command line of your modem.
Type:
connection bindlist
Press Return.
This will list connection bindings.

Look for a line that contains GAME and some port numbers. For example: GAME(UDP) udp 27010-27011
Type:
connection unbind application=GAME(UDP) port=27***-27***
Press Return.
The port numbers in this command must match the numbers that are listed in your GAME port listing, similar to the example above.

And now you're done!

...and what's this suppose to do exactly?

It seems the modem has a special behaviour for UDP connections for games (using the specified port range). Removing this binding will make the modem act normally like it would for any other UDP connection. I'm just speculating about this, as the manual isn't clear.

Also, thanks go to netripper for providing this solution.

Hmmm... But unless you 'associate' 'game' with a device (your PC) it won't apply surely? And all those 'bindings' are are just port forwardings aren't they?

So you just have a port forwarding that you can apply to a machine attached to the router? But which most likely is not, so is doing nothing... I'm confused :(
