TF2 MvM update (now with co-op mode)

Never has been? You are completely wrong.

TFC was one of the best competitive team-games PC gaming has ever had. It was very much of that pedigree. TF2 was meant to recapture this, and clearly, with 7 years of development, they were aiming very high. TF2 from Beta had a huge professional/esports take-up. It was taken very seriously, by teams, sponsors and leagues. It was seen as a real successor to TFC.

People see humour and cartoon graphics and think it's therefore a kiddie-joke game. Categorically wrong.

I said top teams always retire at some point. You're never going to have a game where the top 20-30 players stick around for the entire lifespan of the game. Please reread what I said because you've misunderstood somewhere.

yes, fakkelbrigade and team dignitas (now relic) don't play anymore. They played 10 seasons. That's a lot of time for any team to play a game for. Both teams fell out of the top spots and retired. That's totally normal. You still have teams like TCM and Epsilon who have been around since season 1 and 2 winning the latest seasons.

edit: oh, you were probably replying to Carl-Brit. My bad.

I never played TFC but i know it didn't have the cartoon look to it this one has, and that's why i said IMO, This one shouldn't be taken to serious it looks and feels like a casual game to me.

Don't most games look and feel casual? TF2 is very competitive tbh.

TCM and Epsilon are franchises, and they are shallow shells of what they used to be (though I would say that, being from a feeder team that became TCM in an earlier, better form ;) ). The fact they're still involved in the scene doesn't say so much... it could just as easily be proof of its stagnation, rather than its continued growth. The overall quality and strength of top-level play has, imo, diminished. And it's to do with more than players just getting bored and retiring. TF2 just kinda reached an endpoint where nothing was being done for the competitive community anymore, it was simply repeating itself... and now, well, now the game is where its at now. A frustrating experience.

As time progressed on from the Scout Update, it felt like TF2 became less and less true to its ideals. It went from a really strong competitive class based team shooter to a game for 12 year olds to run around with hats, fuelled by crappy Saxton Hale jokes/comics. :(

Sure, new and great game mechanics have been added over time (e.g. Dead Ringer), but a lot of stuff has been added without any consideration to the balance and uniformity of the game - there's lots of stuff shoehorned in to TF2 now, for example trading, duels, microtransactions ect and as a result, it's now a rather bloated, even complex gae. The Sandman basically broke the whole game when it was first released, and it took quite a long time for Valve to fix it.

One thing that has really suffered is the art direction - widely touted as one of the original success of TF2. It seems like it is completely decimated now, which is an utter shame considering the original effort behind it.

TF2 is still a good game in many respects, but lost its sheen over time due to the way that Valve has taken it.

Oh please. The lineups are still very much the same. Byte, hocz, Kaidus, Rebeli, hmyzi, numlocked, Fisshu, cookye, Extremer, F2, wltrs, basH, Gear etc etc all still play. There's still a lot of veterans playing. I don't even follow the scene anymore so I'm sure there's way more veterans playing than I mentioned. From what I can see the top spot is actually a challenge these days. Dignitas aren't just winning everything like they used to.

It all started going downhill as soon as more than 1 weapon was available for your class (Medic update with Kritz IIRC?)

Some classes needed some options, Your Eternal Reward for example with Spy unlocked some much needed flexibility in the gameplay.

Now it has just gone totally nuts though, the hats as cosmetic only things can be tolerated but the sheer whack balance due to the masses of weapons destroys the game.

So obviously - you used to play for wotr. Not sure exactly who you are by it's not really important.

Your post isn't really entirely correct, your casting an opinion.

Correct - The community did get to a point where it seemed to 'freeze' of sort. That said, let's have a look at today's picture:

Top level play has increased dramatically over the last year, with a number of teams stepping up and the actual tactical and individual play improving. Look at the number of players you won't recognise in ETF2L premiership or playing along side some of the old wotr faces - e.g. Byte

I46 with over 450+ tf2 attendees, including 2 teams from USA. This is by far the biggest event TF2 has ever seen which was only achievable by Community support. Which again, unsurprisingly is bigger then ever thanks to Highlander Competitions being more common.

Just played it for the first time in a few years and i have no idea what's going on, really :p

It looks like you can still get items from achievements? Even though i thought they removed that ages ago. I can't seem to find where my achievements are. Don't even get me started on crafting ;)

Meh. I never crafted anything, and I pick up hats and weapons as I go along. I'm not the only one. Bought a few items to show my support. If anyone needs anything, gimme a call (Papalazarou, Gipsy King).

Maybe we should have a thread, 'items' wanted. I always keep on destroying them.

I'm kind of at a loss with people whining it's 'not what it used to be'. Surely, vanilla game play, no custom items = 'what it used to be'.

You can get items from the class achievements, like "Get 11 of the Sniper specific achievements" and you'll unlock a single item.

Other than that, it's crafts/drops/purchases.

Thats what i think every time i read people's whining posts, if you want a competitive match just make everyone use a stock loadout. It's not like anything's been removed just added.
