Thank you for your application but... (not selected for interview)

Slight derail but I recently went to an assessment centre for a job which basically just involved a competency interview and a technical knowledge q/a. I got an email a couple of days later saying due to the large number of applications it would take a while to process.

My interviewer told me I would hear back before the end of 2014. I haven't heard anything so I emailed them yesterday morning asking about it and still haven't had a reply.

I'm assuming I haven't got it but a 10 second email to confirm this wouldn't go a miss!

At least you didn't spend days preparing for an interview to be turned down for someone they were always going to hire.

If I had your background I'd be emailing companies I wanted to work for and asking about any future/current positions rather than waiting for them to be advertised. Some companies might create a position for someone with your experience.

it baffles me that i applied for a position that is 10 mins from my house the job description reads like my C.V. and i don't even get selected for an interview :(

people are saying im over qualified, i don't buy it they want a Senior and im definately that lol

/rant over

anyone else had this problem?

While it's unfortunate you did not get to interview stage - At least you got a reply. Usually you hear nothing back at all!

I've interviewed for a job I was a perfect fit for. The feedback I got was that I was "too confident"....seemingly knowing what I was talking about when giving answers meant I was unsuitable for the job!

I find it annoying that many businesses do not bother to give feedback on their rejections. Some will refuse to do so. It helps that person develop their CV and job finding skills and is at least a courtesy to that person explaining why.

One of the biggest kick in the teeth I got was applying for a more senior role working with kids but the Manager told me that I wasn't going to be put forward because they required an experienced teacher who had also got a Nursing degree which was fair enough.
The new person started the job and had never been a teacher or got a Nursing degree and I had to hold their hand through every minor detail. A few weeks later it became obvious it was a 'friend' of somebody.

Several years ago I applied for the role of Highways Agency Traffic Officer and all but got the job; I got through the application, the assessment day and the interview. I was just waiting to be offered a post. Then the civil service recruitment freeze was implemented and I got shelved.

Fast forward a few years and they were recruiting again. I applied and didn't even get past the application sift and it was practically the same form as last time.

I asked for feedback and there response was - we don't give feedback.

It really annoyed me at the time, but what can you do?

Yeah, waiting more than two weeks to hear from Lewis's to hear whether I was successful or not after they told me they'd let me know in two weeks.

Has anybody ever got a job offer months/years after they applied?
I've had 3:

1) I applied to drive prisoners around and about a year later I got an unexpected phone call offering me the job but I told them I knew somebody else who would be up for it. They took him on and he very quickly hated it.

2) I applied to work at a juvenile prison where I had already worked at for a few months and six months later I was offered a job

3) At around the same time I applied to be an NSPCA Officer and about 9 months later I was offered a job which I should have taken.

Unfortunately, this is how the world works. I have always thought that it is also the reason the economy is in such a mess.

Nepotism is very dangerous. All the wrong people ending up in charge of things.

I should say at least you got some sort of message. Most of the time it seems no one bothers to let you know and you just end up wondering if you will ever get answer from them. I applied to a job and almost a year later got email saying "unfortunately you didnt get the job". I had figured that one out. It made me smile a little bit.

But that said I now have 2 interviews for 2 jobs I actually want so fingers crossed.

I read a interesting blog recently by someone applying for a job. Similarly they had perfect qualifications/experience and was very quickly rejected for the position. The next day, they got an auto notification that there was a new job posted for the same company that they were suitable for - a completely unrelated position (original was an IT job, the notification was for a kitchen hand or something).

Turned out that the company used a system to handle job applications and was set to auto reject all applications because the HR manager had her "own" way of finding candidates (through LinkedIn!!). They had to use the job system (to check boxes) but she never looked (or passed on) any applications sent to it.

Bonkers.

Lol this job has popped up again for 10k less money on the job boards

companies really take the ****

at least I now know its because I was too expensive lol

My biggest kick in the teeth was applying for a 1st line tech job in a larger company than where I previously worked. 6-7 years experience already, electronic engineering degree (which included web design, assembly and C++). Also, I did some voluntary work there, and manager there said I'd have 95% success of getting the job if I applied. So I applied and got to the final round, 14 people left, for 7 vacancies. I got rejected because HR said that the candidate who beat me had 2 degrees wtf. 18th May 2010 was my worst day this decade so far.

remember some managers won't employee someone better than themselves, it's all about looking after number one

One of the values my employer supposedly lives by is "hire people better than you". It remains to be seen how well ingrained these values are in everyday business practices, but so far they seem to be surprisingly prevalent rather than just something to pay lip service too.

maybe they just didn't want you

even when a hiring manager has a filtered list of well qualified, suitable candidates they're not going to interview all - the reasons for rejection could be anything and you're not necessarily going to find out... it is just one job - I really wouldn't even concern yourself with it unless you find the pattern repeating with multiple jobs that you ought to be suitable for

these were the requirements...

Minimum 5 years Graphic design experience at Senior or Art Director level - I'm a creative director and have been senior for over 10 years, I've been involved in graphic design for over 20 years
Minimum 5 years experience working for market leading blue-chip companies and/or iconic brands - i've worked for Electronic Arts, Lego, Sega etc the list goes on
Portfolio showing original concepts for logo design, packaging design and all forms of print design - Plenty of this in my portfolio
Impeccable knowledge of Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign - i know most Adobe suite like the back of my hand
Excellent organisational skills - I have managed outsourced teams to create triple A games
Excellent communication skills - see above
Proven ability to pitch creative ideas - have pitched to many companies over the years to gain financial backing for projects
Fastidious attention to detail - goes without saying really

not even getting an interview feels like a kick in the teeth tbh

Given your senior position, the proximity of the advertised role and the profession I'm very surprised that they did not already know of you.

I've never understood how been "over qualified" is a bad thing?..But at least they got back to you with a reason,Usually when your unsuccessful they don't bother even saying you didn't get the job..would take them like 5 mins?..just lazy.
