That "bulk-order" vanillia from the bay...

I think I trusted you a thank you Glaucus. Christ, that smell! I thought something had gone horribly off in my fridge, but then remembered they were in there.

Got them stored in my freezer atm, forgot about them but will do something with them this weekend.

That smell isn't natural, spoilt a bit of my food as well as it penetrated it! :o

Yeah thanks for that.
They're just wrong IMO. Hence you got all of the ones left.

Hope things are going better, or should I say as best as possible in these circumstance.

Well the alternative pods arrive this morning and im not impressed with these either, nothing really vanilla about the odor, no oily substance accompanying them but they do have a oily residue feel to them.

seem the same as before just without the oil, these were shipped form france too.

on a side not the other pods i purchased i had kept in a air tight container in a cool dry cupboard, when i went to get them to examine side by side they had been coverd in white mold, not impressed at all, looks like there really is no such thing as good quality cheap vanilla.

I've ordered some more from the original seller as he seems to again be stocking ones claimed to be a higher grade, "AAAAA" which had previously impressed me rather than the recent "A" which a few us have found to be a bit odd.

Will let you know if they're up to standard when they arrive. Hopefully the last lot were just an anomaly.

Dissapointing.

there similar but different if you know what i mean, made a hot chocolate with them and wasn't impressed, my fingers later did stink of a slight vanilla odor so maybe hot chocolate was not the best way to get the flavor out of them.

if you like Glaucus i could send you 2 over in the post free of charge to try yourself.

Have ordered 10, not holding out much hope but its worth the out lay, really have a lot of recipes i really want to get going as long as i have decent vanilla.

vanilla rice pud being my first!

when they arrive i will do some comparisons with he ones you linked before.

Received them - man they have stunk my flat out haha! (despite arriving vacuum packed!)
Those look very dodgy - far too wet, far too large and far too light in colour.

I'd say they were very low grade pods that have already been used to produce vanilla essence. They don't look like Bourbon or Tahitian.

When I mean dry, they look like supermarket ones. Rather than these super cheap ones in that browny/orange liquid.
That could be indicative of those pods having been used in vanilla essence manufacturing and then repackaged - the liquid will be a mixture of the sugar syrup base and the alcohol.

If it was crystallised, that's vanillin, not mould. If there were obvious spore structures then it was mould.

If they have gone off then there's something seriously wrong.

Thanks for the offer but no ta.
Going to order some from http://www.vanillabazaar.com/ they been in goodfood.
Their Purity Vanilla Extracts are excellent, but I'm still not sold on anything being better than Taylor & Colledge Paste.

Big thumbs up for their perfume though.

Well these arrived friday, have to say im not too impressed with these either, not quite as bad as the last but along the same lines of odor.

Made a semifreddo yesterday and there was a distinct lack of true vanilla flavor in the dish that was very apparent with The supermarket bean. might talk myself into buying some of the vanilla paste from the same site and give that a try but at the moment im really just resigning to the fact of paying £2.50 odd a bean at the local SM as the difference it makes to the dish is HUGE!

Yeh its disappointing to say the least, the ones i received was packaged much nicer but they look nothing like the ones in the picture

Ebay alternative cheap ones

as you can see visually identical, slightly moist greasy look to them, odor on the vanilla bazaar ones is not quite as 'BAD' but that may be down to a less intense wash to extract for essence.

Just thought id come back with an update, tonight i decided to make my self my favorite pudding, apple pie and ice cream NOM!

i got my self some kellys clotted cream cornish ice cream as i love the stuff and couldn't be bothered to make my own, i suddenly remembered i had a stock pile of vanilla beans in the back of my cupboard so i went ahead and 'infused' my cornish ice cream with bourbon vanilla, i split and added the caviar from 4 beans as they had been weak and lack luster last time round.

bottom line is these have improved vastly within the 3 months or so from my previous post, aroma flavor and general potency has matured a fair bit, 4 was far too many and 2 would have been more than ample. all is well that ends well.

This was on the vanilla bazaar beans, ive yet to try the ebay cheap bulk order ones but ill make a point of making homemade semifreddo through the week with them and report back
