When it comes to petrol Vs diesel, it really depends on the car's and engine sizes..

If you want fuel economy, then a small petrol 1.1/1.4 saxo type car will see you right for around 40MPG..

However, you could get a 2.0 Turbo Diesel in a much bigger car and still get over 40MPG..

My veccie, if I set the cruise at 70 (for as long as I can bear going that slow), I do get 50MPG+..... My rover 420SDi I got 50-55MPG as well...

If I was looking at small 3 door stuff, I'd agree with Fox that the petrol Vs diesel is not so clear cut, depends on the journey type, and driving style..

ok, but I get the same economy from my 306 TD as I would in say a 1.1 saxo, there or there about esp. down the motorway. But I bet my car is nicer to drive, faster and bigger. Would you agree with that?

I had a Xantia with the same 1.9TD engine, I got about 40 when sat at 70.

Then it was broken. It's capable of over 50mpg at that speed, my Mondeo returns 43mpg average on 150ish mile motorway trips at 75mph and thats petrol - and its NOT as economical as my Xantia was.

Infact, FWIW, the 1.9TD Xantia appeared to be approx 7-8mpg higher than the Mondeo for any given circumstance.

I loved the power delivery style but the Mondeo is not really any more expensive to fuel.

Note: I am NOT recommending a Mondeo, merely offering a comparison between two similar cars, diesel and petrol.

Agree with Gilly- If you can find a nice Xsara go for it. For £1500 you can pretty much take your pick of the Mk 1's. Get one in the right colour and they look pretty good too.

2000 CITROEN Xsara 1.9 Turbo Diesel,
W reg. 48000 miles, metallic green, fsh, 3dr, e/windows, e/sunroof, remote alarm, pas, MoT/tax, very economical, reliable, a one off bargain at. £1,495. No offers

Do they even do a 3dr TD?

AFAIK - the only 3dr's were VTR's and VTS', there may also have been a 3dr West Coast, but these were MK2. They did a HDi VTR, but again MK2 and out of your budget.

Ok, thanks. Thats what a quick google was pointing towards, so what is this then miss print maybe?

Thanks

They did do a Xsara Coupe with the TD engine in - it was a West Coast. Unfortunately it's extremely poorly specified, it doesn't have anywhere near the kit level of the 1.8 VTR or 2.0 VTS - no aircon etc. Just electric windows, PAS and central locking.

That particular one is a little confusing though as Citroen replaced the 1.9TD engine with the 2.0 HDi in 1999... thats a 2000..
