I just set off to do some IR shots of the nearby fields. I thought with the sunset coming in and a light mist...it'd look pretty awesome.

So I walk down and setup, I'm just getting the focus right and screwing the filter on and I hear a quad bike stop behind me....here we go...

Old man: What are you doing here?!
Me: *looks at camera on tripod*
Old man: Well?! Come on! out with it!!!
Me: I'm taking pictures
Old man: But that's MY field
Me: errrm.....right....what difference does that make, I'm a photographer, therefore I take pictures
Old man: Not of my field your not

So I turn to ignore him as all I needed to do was press the shutter button to then continue my arguement, So I set it for a 30 second exposure, and *click* it starts taking the picture

Old man: you should have more respect for your elders!!!!
Ok, so I snapped...

Me: To be fair, you don't have any signs up saying you don't want any pictures taken, I'm taking a picture of the bloody sunset for starters, which isn't owned by anyone! And what harm is it doing, I'm not actually on your field, I'm behind the gate, I'm doing nothing wrong. Unless you can prove I am breaking the law I'm not moving a muscle until I'm finished!

*click* - ahh awesome. The picture is done :D

Old man: Where do you live?
Me: Why, are you going to come and take pictures?
Old man: nope, I'm reporting you to the police for a public disturbance
Me: Riiight...sure, I'm done here anyway.

So I pack away my stuff with the old man standing there looking smug. And I said "I'll be back here tonight, to get some shots of the moonlit field, yes I mean your field as well"

Old man: What time?!
Me: Whenever I feel like it, like I said. I'm breaking no laws.

The guy looked stunned and couldn't think of a reply, so feeling good about myself I proudly march away.

I just got into the flat, turn on the camera and hit the play button

"INSERT CF CARD"

Rubbish.

I've had a run-in with a farmer before. I was on his land but there were no signs and a tarmac road into it.
When he told me to leave I thought fair enough, it is his land. But what ****[/colored me off was the fact that he brought a shotgun out with him from from his house.

As if the problem was serious enough to warrant a gun?

you were perfectly within your rights

taking photos of private property is legal so long as you are on public land

a lot of people are totally ignorant to the laws of this country, you did well to stand your ground

Goddamn paparazzi wrecking everyone's lives again, its people like you who killed Princess Diane, you should be ashamed with yourself..

I bet that poor field and sunset never gets any peace..........

lawl. :D

thats waht i hate about photography in the present climate of things. Phate it will be a good idea to get your rights printed and laminated - so its harder fro them to rip up!

Thing is, if it IS foggy tonight, I'll go back there to take some shots. I'll take my video camera in case he turns up again.

Give him a break :)

Thefts of farm equipment have shot up with the rise in scrap prices so farmers are understandably anxious about strangers. Especially those who go defensive/rude when challenged.

Courtesy goes a long way :)

Dude, there isn't any farm equipment though. It's just a field with a couple of horses in it. And the road in question is under full CCTV so it would have been hard to do anything tbh :p

The guy came across as such an arse, so he got it back tbh.

Fair enough :)

I've been in the position of having to fend off ****** with shotgun in hand and know how paranoid having your business targeted can make a man. Expect the grumpy git you met has had similar experiences.
