The 1024 Width rule

I think the current size is fine. As long threads with lots of images take a long time to load. Maybe we could think about going for a size limit instead ? But that would be a lot harder to monitor unless VB can do that automatically.

That we people can post larger images if they are under a certain size. Poeple can then make their own mind up about the compression/size ratio...

It's fine as it is. Just link to a larger image, if you're that bothered by it. I too have a large monitor, but I don't have my web browser/s taking up the entire screen, as most web pages won't make use of the space anyway. As such I still have to scroll or stretch the window when someone posts something massive.

Another point is even though I have a 24" 1080p monitor, I don't always have my browser full screen, sometimes I have two windows open etc. There's no need for huge images in a thread when you can click or with the right Chrome extension just hover over it to see the bigger image.

Doesn't that black OcUK theme automatically resize images (and do a fairly good job of it)? Could OcUK not implement that for the 1024 rule and then have an option for users to disable that on their accounts so that they see all images at the original size? That way you don't clutter it up for those with low-res monitors or phones but you don't end up with piddly little things in the left of a 2560*1600 monitor?

What's stupid about it Martin?

I'd like to see a proper counter argument if you're going to come up with an aggressive reply like that.

simply put slow adsl still exists i get less than 2 meg and if im downloading bit and browsing then its painfully slow

1024 is good learn to put links to bigger images is simplest one extra click as stated.

and yes i use 27" display and appreciate larger pics but on this forum i prefer the 1024 to stay

I agree with what this chap has to say.

And in addition, as long as I'll be using an iPad or other mobile device to browse the forums, 1024px should be the maximum embedded image size.

It's rather annoying having everything resize itself around an image when someone posts a whacking great big one in a thread.

What OCUK need to do is implement it's own image hosting options so it can have correct scaling. When you make a request to ocuk, based on reported window size, the cdn sends an image based upon a file size and pixel size based on an Apache config so the user sees the best image for them. 5MB 2k x 2k image becomes 200k 320x460 image if you are on iphone for example.

The forum needs the auto resize mod as per other forums.

HOWEVER, it must dynamically scale to the screen res.

On my 15" MBP I want 1024x768, on my 27" 2560x1440 monitor I want 1920x1080 (AKA as large as poss).

It annoys the hell out of me on forums with loads of photos (28 days later forums) that I have to click on everyone to make it larger.

Hopefully the coding bods on this forum will come up with a streamlined solution!!

Everything I post online is 800 pixels wide or 640~ tall so the 1024 rule doesn't affect me :p

I have found those dimensions to be suitable adequate for people browsing from virtually any device of modern age. 1024 wide still requires some sideways action with the cursor or finger.

A solution for forum wide scaling for imagines >1024px would be to do what neowin does whereby the forum inline scales them to 1024, when you click the picture it expands to whatever it is. At least this way all browsers will scale nicely on the device and only expand images when a user clicks on it.

That won't ever happen though here :p

I always post 800px on the long side. It seems best even on my 24" iMac. or iPad or iPhone.

Other rest seems either too big or too small, unless the extra resolution actually calls for it.

TP has correct scaling on photos, which I don't mind. I don't like having to side scroll to see the whole photos. I want to be able to see the whole photo without scrolling, scrolling takes away some of the content of the photo as you are never seeing it all in 1 go.

Yep, XenForo has this built into the software, whether the image is uploaded or embedded into the post.

It's ridiculously useful, and a pleasure to view photo threads on XF sites because of this feature.

The image will automatically fill the message area with a 'Click to show the full size version'

(Not the best example as it's not a fluid width site, but if it was then those of us with huge screens would automatically see the large version)

Is this for thinking of others and/or for stealing purposes? I like that idea. Maybe I should try it.

Me?

I haven't! Although having just looked my Flickr profile info is years old, I never even knew I put it there back then heh!

I've always used 1280. It's not that big these days so go ahead if you want to.
