Building on experience from last year's chilli growing thread - I thought we'd start a fresh with a new thread.

Last year's thread can be found here.

I shall be growing Dorset Nagas. I have a couple of plants over wintered and seeds from last year. I'll be starting in March to bring them out of hibernation.

I have seeds from last year's superstar Naga. If you have space for a Naga (check out the size in the last thread) then my email is trust as I have a load of seeds (unverified how effective they'll be to germinate).

The Naga fruit is hot. You'll be able to smell it throughout the house on cutting it. Your eyes will water and in food it seriously good heat level (I can eat Vindaloo to give you a reference level and it's hotter). The fresh cut flavour is a beautiful pineapple taste compared to the Dorsets you get in Tesco.

I was given a 'grow in a bag' kit for Christmas from a family member but I'm not sure to the success they will bring tbh. I'm a little unsure of the ideal conditions for growing as our flat has rather limited direct sunlight.

I'm really keen to grow my own chillis for use in my 'from scratch indian cooking interests so I'll be following this thread closely for all your tips, and hopefully some success! :)

Watch this.. it could be you.
Sorry, but swearing in the video.

:D

Planted mine saturday, they are germinating in airing cupboard with carrier bags round the pots - worked well last year to get them to germinate.

4 types this year (hope they look like this!!):

1) Hot Marbles

2) Mexiquin

3) Pinnochio's Nose (make chillis 10" long!)

4) Ring of Fire which they threw in for free.

All ordered from here http://www.chileseeds.co.uk/hot_chili_pepper_seed.htm

I've still got 3 bottles of chilli oil, a bottle of chilli vodka and around 50 dried chillis from last year.

Bit sad but I can't wait, should be germinated in 2-3 weeks. :o

No hotlinking please.

Whats a decent beginners chili to grow? One that doesn't require lots of sun preferably.

Would like to have a go at this this year.

Virtually any Jalapeno will grow given some light and will tolerate serious watering abuse! They also aren't too large and fruit continuously.

A couple of years ago I bought some dragons blood that is made with dorset naga's, SERIOUSLY HOT STUFF
Never had anything that hot before & I like hot.

It depends on 'direct' as some plants will die in direct sun in summer (even here!). They do well on a kitchen window for example. In the end chillies are simple beasts: sun+water+food = chilli peppers! So you may find they're slower to grow. Worth trying :D

I have 35 plants on a south facing window ledge at the moment, they will be moved to the greenhouse once the risk of hard frost is gone. The varieties include:

Assam Bhut Jolokia
CPI Bhut Jolokia
Chocolate Bhut Jolocia
Morich Naga
Chocolate Habanero
Mustard Habaanero
Red Savina
Demon Red
Fuego
F1 Joes Long
Numex Twilight
Royal Black

Still to sow when I have some room:

7-Pod/Pot
7-Pod/Pot - Jonah Strain
Trinidad Scorpion
Dorset Naga
Orange Habanero
Scotch Bonnet
Big Sun
Ring of Fire
Fatalii
Aji Cristal

Overwintering:

Orange Habanero
Antillais Caribbean
Morich Naga
Scotch Bonnet
Numex twilight
Royal Black
Hot 2003

I might be needing a bigger greenhouse :o

Well the offer still stands - if you can cope with the size of plant (do not underestimate) and the heat of fruit then shoot me a trust.

The key with Nagas really comes down to warmer than normal germination and then a good amount of sunlight with regular water/feed so it doesn't get stressed.

I can't wait to get my plants on the go again including my chilli's, but every time I step near my greenhouse it starts snowing!
Ground up all my dried out chilli's from last year and have a nice load of crushed chilli's that I've been adding to everything.
Haven't decided on what type I want to grow yet, will have a few types going this year I think, also planning on some peas, Toms and courgettes too I think.

I will be having another go at this. Last years were a bit of a disaster, I didn't get many chilis and they weren't hot. :(

What I'm doing differently,

I will thin my plants out more aggressively, and not try to grow two plants in one small pot.
I will get some nice chillis from the market and use the seeds, instead of buying seeds from Wilkinson.
I will also grow Basil, it's meant to help ward off whitefly, something I was plagued with last year.
I will not over water, and add gravel to help drainage.

Good idea on the new thread

I sowed mine a few weeks ago after germinating them in bags in the airing cupboard. I've got two Fuego plants, two Mexiquin and two Ring Of Fire plants on the go. Will stick some pictures up tomorrow :)

mm i think i might try to grow some jalepenos actually, have i missed the boat with them or what?

P.S. OP theres so much hotter than vindaloo out there - its not THAT hot :)
