The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

Another little harvest from the greenhouse, the heater is doing its job nicely extending the season. The plants that are outside the greenhouse have suffered very badly in the recent frost but those inside are still doing well. I still have plenty more to harvest and another 13kg of gas to burn before I call it quits this year.

Top half of the picture we have Scotch Bonnet (red), Orange Habs, Chocolate Habs and Mustard Habs. Bottom left are 7-pot and bottom right are Bhut Jolokia and Chocolate Bhut Jolokia.

I still have plenty more pods on the plants, mainly Nagas, mixed Habs, a few Trinidad Scorpion and various annums.

I made a curry last night with one of the Chocolate Bhuts in it, which was fiercely hot, but I am still of the opinion that the hottest pods this year were the Trinidad Scorpion.

Lessons learnt from this year:

1) Don't start too early as the plants I started in March did far better than those I started in January.
2) Grow a few less plants as it got a bit overcrowded in the greenhouse.
3) Don't eat Trinidad Scorpion raw as the burn is unbelievable and the toilet experience the following day is unbearable. ;)

Forwards and onwards to next season.

I hope this doesn't seem rude or anything...but could I buy a selection of chillis off of you?

There's nothing I love more in the world than chillis, but I'm the most useless gardener there is and all my plants end up dying before I get a decent crop.

I was idly browsing and discovered there is such a thing as chilli sherry, so I am attempting my first bottle with scotch bonnets from Sainsbury. All I have to do now is leave it in a dark cupboard for a month.

Ta for that idea, one bottle now prepared, coincidentally with the same fino sherry and scotch bonnets :)

I am a complete chilli novice. My sisters boyfriend gave me 3 chilli plants about six weeks ago. They're sitting on my kitchen window sill and have grown rather tall and thin and struggle to stand alone if I take them off the window sill.

Couple of questions.

Should I cut them back?
If so how far?
If not then what should I do?

Thanks

I'm following this guide, but it is my first go so I can't vouch for it myself.

There's another guide here.

Hi All,

I purchased a chilli plant a few years ago from a garden centre. It has given me a crapload of chillies over the years, but about April this year, it got infested by little grey, yeast- grain- sized mites. I got rid of these, and now it is looking poorly again. There seems to be some blackness (Fungus?) appearing on the joints and one or two of the chillies, and it is looking rather sad. I thought at first it was just in need of some water/ feeding, but it's not looking any better and it's producing less chillis than normal. Also some of the leaves are curling up/ shrivelling up/ going grey then brown.

It is in a room which is not heated during the day- should I move it somewhere warmer?

It looks like Phytopthora blight to me, but I would be surprised as I usually underwater rather than overwater it, which is what normally encourages such an affliction

Here are some pics

joint discoloration seems to happen naturally. its possible underfeeding can cause more of it, doesnt look like it in your case. your plant looks great and healthy!!

my scotch bonnets are in limbo and my jalapeno is still fruiting, but they are small cos of not enough daylight.

did anyone else find hot peppers like the scotch bonnet can cope well enough in a heated room with double glazed windows? its not dropped many leaves but its not flowering or fruiting, its just stood stil like. i left another near single glazed and all the leaves dropped off :\ looks dead so i moved it to a warmer place.

Btw.. I will send out the seeds I promised to those that contacted me (too cold now for them to sit in the mailbox at -6). I was a little pre-occupied with other things and then the early cold snap :/

I've not forgotten :)

Oh yes - the joint colour changes are normal. Both my jalapenos and nagas' stems changed colour as they matured.

February was probably your best shot, any earlier and they'll need heat/light life support.

Not long now till February :)

I grew 3 Naga Jolokia plants last summer... went ok for my first attempt but i'm hoping to do better this year!
Don't suppose anyone fancies trading some kind of Chocolate Hab seeds? Got Thai Demon, Piri Piri and Jalapeno seeds but they don't really interest me.

Oh... and time for a 2011 thread? :D
