The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

They're looking good - I think they need a little more sun light but as you've moved them see how it goes. I'd still rotate them but they may need staking and tying.
Is rotating them important/good then? I always try not to rotate them as I assumed if the leaves are pointing towards the sun you want to keep it that way to get them maximum light.

You dont need all the fancy equipment to grow them, aslong as they have plenty of warmth, sunlight and water they'll grow just fine.

Totally agree, I'm never quite sure how some people make growing chillies out to be such a complicated business especially if all you want is some bog standard ones for basic cooking. My process last year consisted of the following:

1. Buy chillies from super market and remove 4 seeds
2. Plant seeds in small pots just below surface water cover with cling film and place on sunny window ledge
3. Wait for seeds to germinate, remove cling film
4. Wait till plants reached approx 10cm then transplant to large pots
5. Water and feed until flowers appear
6. polinate flowers with old peg
7. water and feed until fruit ready for Harvest
8. Repeat 5. 6. 7. until it gets too cold for chillies to grow.

im now much more inclined to grow some! I may even turn my crappy portable drinks cooler onto heater mode for a few hours and leave the seeds in there to germinate

I'd definately start with the easy option chillies rather than the more challenging super hot varieties, a successfull crop will boost your confidence and you can find out if the whole process interests you fr a very minimal outlay.

Got these on the go

Habanero Orange
Ancho Mulato
Ring of Fire
Serrano Del Sol

The Habanero and Serrano have germinated, just waiting on the other two to catch up.
My Cayennes last year had zero heat, a sweet pepper had more kick. Dont know why this happened but hey ho.

Anyone name any fairly easy chilli's to grow then?

I know I keep saying this but your best bet is to just go to the super market buy the ones you usually use for cooking and grow the seeds from those. This way you end up with produce you know you will use, I could for example grow a load of Jalepeno's or something but I simply wouldn't use them so why bother?

Good thinking batman. Will gather some seeds from the chilli's I have at the moment then and see what happens :)

I was given and bought about 10 varieties of chillis so will start to get some seeds on the go as all my plants were neglected while I was away and even my naga has died. Was gutted the effort I put in to that one :( ah well, new season time!!

You don't really need lights etc etc if you work with nature, as others have said all you need for chillis are:

1. Warm place for germination - a steady 20degC (you don't need light for the initial germination period)
2. a sunny(ish) location to put them when they've started to sprout leaves that's not subject to frost or frosty draughts with a steady temperature
3. Just keep them watered with a bit of liquid chilli food every so often.
4. Re-pot when they outgrow their current one (assuming you want them to grow bigger).

Most window sills are perfect, just careful of point 2 when they're young. Only time when you need things like lamps are if you're trying to give them a head start (useful if you have plant that takes longer to grow).

If you find they're lacking in heat - it may be because they're too immature.

Mine seem to have perked up today now that I've moved them, they're not so bent anymore. :)

Can also see the beginnings of a second set of leaves coming through.

wahoo just put agencies fees down on a house with a mahossive garden, which also has some weed filled flower beds in. Also has conservatory as well.
Move in 8th of march..
So hopefully no chilli deaths from lack of light this year.

Good stuff AH :)

Just checked my overwinter Nagas from last year. I know the sill has got very cold over winter so it's amazing they've survived.

The old leaves over winter have died off - mainly due to lack of water (oops!) but the plants are alive and have small leaves appearing. So I've given them a good watering, next watering I'll start to give them some Chilli Focus as I didn't cut back the root mass (thus not repotting to refresh the soil). I have noted that two have some stem browning at the top (probably froze!)

I have had two enquiries about Naga seeds and so I'll sort those out asap (although I have a date on saturday so I may only have a chance to post them sunday).

Are Birdseye chillies easy to grow? I think they were the ones i got from the supermarket last time, I'll get some more this week and deseed a couple.

I'd also like to grow some really hot chillies to dry out and grind into powder. What would you recommend for this purpose? The powder would be used in chillies and curries to add some heat.

Got 5 Ring of Fire and 5 Peperoncino Adorno (they looked rather nice). Just planted about 5 minutes ago, anyone have an idea when I should see any sign of life?
