i have been trying myfitnesspal which is an iphone/android app to log food intake etc.

the android one seems better as you can scan barcodes to find foods rather than text search. it seems an ok app and best of all its free :)

I've tried using that foodfocus calorie logger but it appears to be so inaccurate with calories and servings and wont let me alter the portion size. Guess it'll have to be the old fashioned way.

Try it in a different browser it does not work with safari or chrome works ok in IE.

Did my first 'Workout B' of the 5x5 routine today, did squats/barbell push and deadlifts.

It was the first time in my life I have ever done deadlifts, only did 40kg..... BLOODY HELL what an exercise!!

I have to admit Deadlift is my favourite lift and like many others I think it's because it is the biggest lift!

I've yet to try again for a max lift to beat my personal best but I am slowly coming back up Kg for Kg, Hoping that next week I can top 180 :D Then I'll have to buy some more weights because I wont have enough to progress

Ah, the feeling of becoming a man ;)

Like your balls dropping and getting it in all at once, IIRC.

I actually think...*looks..* YES, THERE ARE A COUPLE OF HAIRS ON MY CHEST!!

I mentioned to people at work that i'd just been to the gym and done deadlfts for the first time, and how hard they are etc, the reactions were as follows:

"omfg I can't belive you are doing them, you will hurt youself"
"why are you bothering with leg exercises"
"it's such a terrible exercise you will slip a disk or something"

Ahhh *sigh*! I know it was only 40KG but i'm trying to get the form correct, I KNOW I will have done something wrong, what are the KEY points to remember?

on that deadlift video ^^ is that as deep as you go?

I mean, when he puts his shins on the bar and sits back slightly, he doesn't 'sit back' very far at all, I have watched videos where they put the bar to their shins, then sit back loads more - not quite as much as a squat, but still much more than that fella

edit: Oh he explains that in the 'common faults' bit, I must have been going into too much of a squat position

If you go too deep the deadlift becomes a hanging squat instead of what it should be, a deadlift. :)

As long as you keep your shoulders/scapula above the bar, and the bar above the center of your feet, you'll be set. It's difficult to not have the right position when you put these in position. :)

Thats a cracking video jestar, explain a lot to me. I was worried about getting into that position he's drawn as I thought it would be bad for my back! Guess not as long as I do it right, I got it about 80% right i guess :p

As long as your back isn't bending and you keep your shoulders back then you should find it pretty difficult to hurt yourself. Everything else such as footing, grip width, bar placement, hip drive etc will make you more efficient at the lift. Keeping your back fixed and straight (not hyperextended) is what's important from a beginners perspective.

Since deadlifting all my strength has gone up. I've also been sporting increased body hair. :D

Yes it's a real man's exercise.

Strangely today, a guy that goes to the gym with me suddenly deadlifted 200kg for 5 reps today and 190kg for 8 reps. One month ago he could barely get 170kg up.

The lads in physio working with him because he had a shoulder injury, said he's up 15kg in weight aswell. All while losing even more bady fat aparently.

They thought it was kind of suspicious, specially since he suddenly made such huge improvements in all his lifts.

You should see this guy deadlift, no leg drive or hip movement, he basically lifts it all with his BACK, which is so curved it's painful to watch.

Oh well, More of a challange for me! Considering he's got 5 years lifting experience over me and is big into sports since a kid.

I still think I made a huge improvement given my little years worth of lifting properly and doing any soft of exercise :D

Gear does that ;)

S-s-s-steroids!

Anyway, I think I've been finding the aspartame, or something else in the cookies and cream whey from myprotein has been giving me debilitating headaches. Might have to chuck out about 2.5kg of whey unless someone wants it on the cheap.
