The 2012 Chilli growing thread - the second burn!

This thread is seriously slow this year :(

I didn't find this thread until the other day! Always forget about the new sub forums!

I've got my seeds ordered, should be with me ready for planting by the weekend. This year I'm going for Cayennes, Scotch Bonnets, Habernos and Tabascos, hope I have as good a year as last year! :)

One thing which ill try to do different this year will be to keep the plants more under control. I just let them grow last year and the Cayennes got massive and unstable. Going to either chop the tops off when they get to around 10/12" or plant them deeper in the pots and build the soil up around them as they grow. Or a mixture of both. :)

That sounds like a good plan.. All of mine got stupidly tall last year and took over the place! I ended up having to prop them all up with a variety of canes to stop them falling over!

I'm growing them in a wardrobe.

It's next to impossible to take pics. If lights are on camera cant cope, if lights are off need flash and Mylar reflects it all back.

Curry is leafy one, naga at front and has over taken the hot cherry.
Hit cherry back left with a few small leafs.

It needs a good water, starting to wilt.

The curry is already flowering.
I just can't believe the resistance, growth and easiness of the curry plant. If anyone's looking for an easy plant, this is the knee to go for.

Just picked up a heated prop from B&Q for a tenner. Seemed a decent price compared to what Ive seen them sold for in the past if anyone is interested...

Yet to see how good it is though.

They are OK. I got one about 3 weeks ago (at £15) and it has kick started mine. I might get another one if they are down to a tenner now.

I am a bit stuck tbh of what to do with mine. Got a few seedlings now and I think I am at the point where I should take them out of the propagator. With the weather being cold though I am a bit concerned that if I stick them in the window sill they will die. Our heating isn't on in the day while we are out at work so it gets a bit chilly in the room where they are.

That's the one I got last week. Made by Verve, just be careful as at the B&Q I went to they had their own stock £13.99 with the £9.99verve price label. Check out runner person went back and grabbed me the right out.

I planted up some peppers and Explosive Embers last week (9/2, I've dated them) and I can see one has a tiny wee shoot off it. I planted some Summer of Fire today but couldn't find my germination powder (saltpeter I think) so they just went in the soil as was, no soaking. I don't really want to pay for it again for a few crystals of the stuff.

Couple of weeks a go I planted two curry seeds and left them on the windowsill with cling film over the top, old school method! Course when I got the heated prop I've moved them over. I was wanting to do one batch then an other but might turn into a staggered lot.

On a related growing food note I got a blueberry bush for £1.99 from J Parkers. Kept it in doors so far as I don't have the soil to replant it (needs acidic) but by heck it ain't have growing! Shame the other bush I got form them still looks like a dead twig =/

No it won't fit. My window sill isn't deep enough :(

Time for some homemade cloches, chop the top off some plastic bottles and place those over the plants to keep them extra warm during the day. You'll be surprised how well the do just on a window sill we've all become conditioned to think our houses get absolutelt freezing during the day when in reality even in the coldest weather they will rarely fall into single figures and in moderate weather stay reasonably warm all the time.

Right guys, when should I move my seedlings from their trays to pots?

Most of them have recently grown their second set of leaves (first set of true leaves?) so I'm thinking it's time to move them. Also what size pot should I use?

Sounds like now is about the right time to move them on but I would always weight a couple of days longer than you think just to give them that exra chance to toughen up.

I'd start with 7cm pots and then when they are well established move onto the final pots.

Yesterday had a couple of little green shoots, barely visable to the eye. Woke up this morning with a couple of seedlings about 10mm in height!

I'm cheap and can't be bothered going up sizes of pots gradually. What would be the best size to get? These ones? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50-X-13CM...w_Boxes_CV&hash=item1e58d4d933#ht_1665wt_1163

That's not the idea of potting up.

If you put a small plant straight in a massive container, it will concentrate it's growth on it's root system rather than it's foliage. That's why you pot up in incremental sizes.

Just sown some leeks and put the pots into the heated prop. It's currently sat at 27 degrees so its certainly capable of keeping things warm. Plus its slightly larger than the other props which I have!
