Question for you old boys... mid-30s now how bad does getting old get? I'm starting to feel recovery tank and although I'm strong I don't quite have the same energy
I'm turning 60 this week.

I'm not as energetic as I was at 25 but I can only say that age has crept up on me. Training at the moment consists of 3/4 lifting sessions a week and 4/5 sessions on the bike for cardio which is usually about 200-300km .

I've managed to pick up or irritate an old shoulder injury at the moment so that's taking time to clear up but I'd say I'm about as fit as I've ever been. In fact I'm very close to the six pack at 60 club :p

Anyone got any good deals on whey powder at the moment? Just about to run out. Wasn’t hugely impressed with the bodybuilding warehouse pure 80 chocolate flavour, but seemed to do the job.

Requirements - chocolate flavour!

Sadly in terms of quality and flavours it really is between Bulk, MP, and BBW. So its just about finding the right code at the right time to get the best deal now.

I was fixed to chocolate / strawberry, but just took a gamble on hokkaido milk from MP in a recent clearance as i was able to get 5kg for £55.

Gave up whey recently as whilst a convenient way to get in 30/40g of protein, when in a deficit there is nothing worse than drinking calories when I could be eating :p

New staple lunch at work is a pack of brown rice, tin of tuna in spring water, then some form of flavouring like siracha etc on the top, 550 cals, 35g of protein, incredibly filling , enjoyable and £1.15 a meal.

Plan to mix it up with tinned red salmon too, any other cheap/good nutritional value meals people do here with minimal prep?

Myprotein have a decent offer on, but still seems quite pricey. Have you tried protein works?

@Defy Belief - I use them as a pre/post workout top up. I find it’s good for recovery but also keeps my diet more consistent overall (I’ve been in a theoretical deficit for some time). Big up the packet rice though. It’s so helpful for lunches. I tend to bulk cook a load of chicken on a Sunday and dish it out into tubs with broccoli, adding rice as the week progresses from packets. Homemade habanero hot sauce helps make it less boring!!

I remember getting 5kg of protein for less than what I have to pay for 2.5kg now even with 45% off - just lol @ the non-sale price of a dairy byproduct now. I don’t want to eat powdered bugs and soy. :(

I do! where did you get the 9kg for £40 from?!? also what flavours?

I have to take at least a day off between training. If you go onto TRT then you might be able to do more - but also joints and tendons take longer to recover and are often more swollen for longer after a big session. The only way joints and tendons repair is rest and rehab - other than some more grey area peptides.

Mixing martial arts, and gym training does take it's toll. I train a combination of both 4x on a rolling basis per week. Sleep, food, and recovery is important. I go to a sports massage and physio 2-3x per month.

I'm mid 40s, but definitely perform better than my age, but it's relentless - an injury sets you back a good week or so. And you're often in pain!

In your mid 30s you shouldn't be that bad yet.

Taking a day off between training has been the best for me too. Despite making progress, I pushed a too much volume and ended up regressing for a couple of seasons combined with low Vit D it was pretty rough. Are you on TRT now?
p.s. Good to see you're still training hard :)

Still making progress at 40? Amazing.

Not yet but I know some who are. But I keep a check on things. Definitely feeling harder on recovery but still pushing myself. I am not going for PBs anymore. Just keep the volume decent. Keep the weights relatively heavy for my bodyweight and just keep the body moving. I am more interested in ensuring I do the right exercises to help with my martial arts. It gives me a purpose and a target to train for rather than just lifting bigger weights or chasing bigger numbers completely lost it's s appeal to me.

I'm more interested in staying strong, fit, and train functionally.

I'm past my peak in terms of max lifts, but now it's about enhancing resilience and pushing through age related issues. I'm also determined not to be a typical #dadbod. If I can stay around 96-100kg and sub 16% I'll be very happy with that. Sure, I'll never rep 200kg squats any more, or 200+ deads, but if I can continually do multiple times bodyweight exercise, stay really explosive, and powerful that will work for me. I'm stronger than the average bloke of my age and it feels good lifting weights still, until it doesn't I'll keep at it.
