The 56k Modem Days!

Web 0.5 websites were full of animated gif and then bang 50 million sites would open up, for everyone you closed 10 more would open up the only option was to restart the PC.

I remember my 9600 baud days and BBS servers. There was something geeky about setting up modems, dial strings and so on. I remember multiplexing 2 connections together and was amazed at the download capacity of 28.8 modems! Funny thing is now we have mobile phones which can browse the internet!! Who'd have thunk it?!

Those were the days, napster rocked :p

Used to try and play online doom and always failed miserably. We were with compuserve at first then moved to virgin so we cud pay monthly and not have huge bills. Only ever got 28.8k though as our phoneline couldnt handle the speed apparently :p

fap....................................fap fap fap.............................fap.............................fap fap fap........................................fap fap fap fap........................................fap.............fap........................fapfap.....................................fapfapfapfapfapfap

And then the horror when you saw the evidence that it was a ladyboy....followed by a bit more fapfapfap of course!:p

My first modem was on the C64 (Circa 1986) and if my memory serves me correctly was 1200bps down & 300bps up.
Used it to connect to Compunet (Edit: Not compuserve, that was way later - Doh) and play MUD.

I remember being compltly amazed that my friend who had BB before anyone else could download a song on Kazaa, start listening to it and it would be finished downloading by the time the song had played.

My dial-up modem was not even 56k :(

33.6 I had.

For anyone who did go for 56k in its twilight years, did you go with 56k Flex or X2?

I stayed with the 33.6 untill I got Broadband as the cost of a new dial up modem could not be justified with the "real life" increases going from 33.6 to 56k.

For the record, my ISP (Diamond Cable) only supported the K56 Flex standard.

Napster for the win :) although nowadays it is a BIG fail of course.

One of my mates went round computer fairs and bought about 5 different modems. All because he wanted a 180 ping on CS. He was sick of lagging around with 500 and it was unplayable. One of his mates asked the guy 'will this give me good ping?' Haha.
