The Absolute Must-Have App Thread!

I know it might seem patronising, but have you checked the save password box in the connection properties dialogue?

Yup. :)

I'll look into the ports, I just assumed that it'd be the same as the other considering it's the same host. Is there an easy way to check? :)

that's weird then - I'll find out the version I'm using when I get home so you can have a go with that; it works perfectly.

best to just ask your host. if you have something like cpanel, it might show you there, but I doubt it. I take it you've given permission for the user to access the database from your IP

Looking at the server variables in PHPMyAdmin shows the port as 3306. :(

Not done the permissions yet, hadn't thought of that tbh. :o

Hints, please? :p

do you use cpanel?

if so, go to mysql databases on the home menu. towards the bottom there's a section for allowed hosts. stick your IP address in there. That shouldn't account for a blocked protocol, though.

Quicksilver - Handbrake is a 1 click thing for multiple files - you can queue them up if you've ripped the discs. I've never used visualhub though because I thought you had to pay for it

oooh, that's mean. get yourself a good host!

I don't know how good your mysql is, but this explains grant and how you allow connections from remote hosts. Only allow what you need, though (I would guess select, update, insert, delete - don't add truncate or anything)

I was so close to buying that, but then I discovered launchd and found that I could emulate everything I would've used in hazel with launchd and bash so I didn't get it. looks good for if you can't be bothered with bash scripting and plists, though.

Bento is just so 'Mac' it makes me cry tears of joy! ;)

I was going to get that as well, but all the reviews I read of it said it was nowhere near as good as expected so I didn't bother. might give it a looksee

I need a database to organise project files etc. and I struggled for ages with the full blown Filemaker. With Bento I finally 'got it' and learned how to use a database to full effect, it is possible to set up some powerful, impressive and useful databases quickly. Of course there is no server support etc. but I don't need that and for the price it just cannot be beaten.

my picks

LaunchBar - I appreciate Quicksilver, but I've defected to this. If you're not reliant on a specific plugin or advanced feature of Quicksilver, then, IMO, this is a tighter and superior program.

Perian + Flip4Mac - There's no need to install an additionnal video player. Add these components to Quicktime and it will handle the various formats system-wide.

Unarchiver - For decompressing files. It's like Stuffit Expander, but more streamlined and more reliable.

SteerMouse - I wouldn't own a Mac if an application like this wasn't available. Makes the mouse pointer behaviour usable.

Do I uninstall the MS drivers before installing steermouse?

Follow up post!

After setting up a few rules, based on the basic ones I'm very impressed with Hazel. :)

Zip's now get un-zipped and filed in the right folder, videos music, pictures and documents all get sent to their respective homes. Music gets shoved into iTunes. And then apps get sent to a folder as do .dmg's. All of them get tagged with a lovely colour along the way too. :p
