Volkswagen Citi Golf

The original Volkswagen Golf Mk1 was released in 1974 and became an immediate success. In 1978, Volkswagen South Africa began assembling the Mk1 locally.
The Citi Golf was launched as a locally produced version of the Mk1. It was initially available in only three colours - red, yellow, and blue - highlighted in a marketing campaign that used the slogan “Red, Yellow, Blue… Not Green!” The campaign’s visual style was influenced by the artwork of Dutch painter Piet Mondrian.
In 1985, Volkswagen South Africa introduced a performance version called the Citi Golf Sport. It came with a 1.6-litre carburettor engine and was marketed with the slogan “New Citigolf Sport, drive it home, Sport, drive it home.” This engine was later replaced with a more powerful 1.8-litre carburettor engine.
A new paint colour, black with white decals, was added to the range, specifically for the Sport model.
