This tree was "apparently" struck by lightning and stripped the bark (that or one determined photo opp guy with a bark stripper and a long ladder). Either way it's dead - it just doesn't know it yet...
I thought that was the blade of a sword. I was asking where the handle was. But I see now the metal base part is the handle. I just imagined swords to have longer handles.

Ah, I see, sorry! That was an Indian sword called a tulwar (that one is probably from around 1673) and they all have iron or brass handles of usually cramped dimensions which forces a certain type of cutting.
