Yup, fan speed was always ~3200 RPM, which is what made it so strange that it was shutting down. Wasn't until I found proper software to find that CPU was > 80c, causing system shutdown. All fixed now with no wires in the way and new spooge, all happy.

The wall seemed surprised by this mandate.
