The old iPad thread was closed because it had degenerated into the old Mac Vs. PC argument.

I don't want this to happen again.

This thread is for iPad stuff ONLY. No Mac Vs. PC discussions in here. No "My OS X is better than your Windows 7" or "My Windows 7 is better than your OS X" or any of that stuff.

Any of that will result in post removal and suspensions being handed out.

This is for iPad stuff only.

Go for it!

Thanks Feek! Let's keep this on track guys.

I have been following the previous thread a lot but yet to post. Here are my thoughts -

At the time of the Apple announcement I was excited by the technology and the form factor of the iPad. I tried not to get carried away or caught up in the hype though as I wanted to wait to see plenty of reviews and hear more about it.

I am not an Apple fanboy and as yet have never owned an Apple product. There are a few guys at work who do have MBP or iMacs and to be honest the brief time I have spent with these I have been more than impressed with the build quality and attention to detail that I expect to see in the iPad.

I now feel pretty convinced I am going to be getting an iPad as I love the idea, the form factor, the UI and everything I have seen that it does. It also fits in perfectly with my other devices; I have a BlackBerry (work phone so no options for me on model) that is awful for anything other than phone/email, I have a laptop (decent spec) for work that is now so bloated with things I need at work it takes an age to boot and battery life is awful, I also have a powerful home PC (quad-core, 6GB RAM, huge monitor) that I use for some virtualisation and study / home labs.

For me the iPad fits in with this perfectly for web browsing at home without having to turn on an overkill, powerful PC. I can sit anywhere in the house and have an instant-on device to browse the web, check email or read a book. I can't think of a single site I use regularly that requires flash and have no worries about the lack of this support - I use Safari quite often on my GF iPhone and have not had a problem but would love the idea of having it on a larger screen.

I really like the look of the iBook app / store and think this will be useful for sitting at home / travelling and picking up to have a quick read of some PDF's from work (converted to ePub) or for reading books in general. I have also been impressed with some of the news / e-zine formats that have been seen so far and can only think that this is the beginning of greater things to come as the developers push the bounderies and think of new ways to publish their content.

OS-wise I think Apple made the right choice as this is the type of device that I don't want to have to worry about OS maintenance or upkeep - I want something uncomplicated.

Overall I am pretty impressed and happy with what I have seen of the iPad. I have no doubts there will be drawbacks and further improvements to come in version 2 but for my own personal reasons I will be getting one as it looks to fit my needs perfectly. Which one I get and whether I import or not will have to wait until they finally release UK pricing.....COME ON APPLE!!!

God im tempted to get one of these but i feel like my itouch 32gb it will get left and get dusty...if the price is less than say £250 there will be some serious consideration :P

That KORG app looks crazy!

I haven't really said much on the topic except the 'OMG I WANT IT NOW' etc...

What really makes the iPad, or what will make the iPad successful is the apps, pure and simple. As it did on the iPhone, you take for instance my sister & two nieces, they have an iPhone & 2 iPod Touches respectively.

They are NOT computer literate, well perhaps my nieces are to a degree but not the installing / setting up of things, they just basically use it, until I am required to fix it.

NOT with their iPhone/Touch, they haven't really asked me about anything regarding how to use it. Albeit I helped my sister setup her iPhone initially, plus register their iTunes gift cards I bought them all. Together they agree on apps to purchase which they all get once synced, and enjoy. THEY tell me of apps that are cool and I should download, and it isn't just games.

It is normal to go round and find all three using their 'devices' shall we call em' playing this/that all without having to ask me how to do so. THAT is what Apple have done well, we might bitch on here about it not doing THIS OR THAT but ultimately, it makes the device less likely to be corrupted by the user by creating this hassle free way of interfacing with the device.

However with the success of the App Store, I aint too happy with some of the prices being floated about for the iPad, but some do look really good. It's like the developers are purposely increasing the price 'just because' its a new device.

For me though its all about video, to watch TV shows / movies while in bed, sofa or on a long journey. As good as the iPhone is, you will certainly appreciate the extra large screen while watching whatever. Once you finish, press the power button and put it to one side. None of this logging off or shutting down, closing the screen on the keyboard like a lot do with their netbooks or whatever.

Actually, mentioning the netbooks is key here, they came out of nowhere and burst onto the scene as a great tool for surfing etc. A little sidekick of sorts, but other than surfing/email what else can you do? You certainly cannot enjoy the thousands and thousands of apps/games....thats why the iPad is such a great device, its not so much the device itself but the interface, and the content!

I've waffled enough now, dunno if it makes sense but its 1:15am and I'm tired!

This does look a cool device, but I have just come across something called pad-dock for iphone, which effectively magnifies your iphone to the size of the ipad.

http://www.officialwire.com/main.php?action=posted_news&rid=122948

It retails at iwantoneofthose for £89 I think.

Is the additional premium of an ipad worth it over the pad-dock (obviously only relevant if you have an Iphone) ?
