*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

I've just read Paul Thurrott's (the Windows guy) pre-review. He doesn't seem to like it but he is such a fanboy I find his opinion articles hard to read these days. So if you want a negative review have a click, but I almost don't recommend it as I'm sure he does it just to annoy Apple fans:

I want one, but I've decided if they price the base model at more than £400 then they are taking the mick and I'll wait.

Ooh, I've got an acquaintance who is in Texas for a couple of days and has offered to pick me up a 16Gb one, which works out just shy of £330 quid.

Any downfalls to importing? Will be handy if they announce dates and prices for UK today, will help me make my mind up!

This is part of what tempts me to jump on th first gen bandwagon. It's almost good enough, for reading the news, catching up on email and browsing casually it's good. I can keep all my Cisco/Juniper documentation on it in ebook format which will be really handy for work. That's almost enough to excuse the lack of video conferencing..

..but stuff like the Korg app will probably push me over the edge - £5.99? What an absolute bargain and how cool is that as an idea - there's going to be more stuff like that too...

Don't forget that many apps are already on the store with 'launch special' pricing, so worth picking up (especially the free ones) on iTunes (via search) now in case the price rises by the time the iPad is released here.

Supposedly there will be an announcement at 1pm today with regards to pre-order/launch dates and price in the UK. Pinch of salt required, but fingers crossed.

I was just coming here to post that. Hopefully we'll be in the know by this afternoon.

Working on todays bank rates including the Florida tax of 6.5% on the US$499 cost of the iPad, works out at £351. Add a few quid on that for the true currency exchange rates available today from any exchange, you'd probably be talking minimum of £360. So a few peoples guesses of £380 ish would be about right for the UK market.
