*** The all new Apple iPad thread - Keep all iPad stuff in here ***

**** it. Im gonna buy one...

... or am I :D

ARGH CANT DECIDE!

I think if you can weather the pre-order period and the launch week you'll be fine.

The more I think about it the more I'm glad they priced it out of my self-imposed range. With the next iPhone hardware around the corner and flash storage improvements toward the end of this year, I think the specs of the iPad are going to look a little old before their time.

Of course, value for money is just one aspect are there are a hundred alternative reasons to get one but, for me, it's just not justified the cost.

I've spent the day testing / using an app called Air Video.

Essentially it allows on-the-fly transcoding of most video formats, to ones that Apple devices understand.

Basically, I've ripped all my DVDs and Blu-Rays to .MKV and this app allows me to watch any of the movies with around a 30 second buffer at the start - great if you don't fancy re-encoding your library or have limited space on your device.

For example, I use around 12GB of my iPhone 16GB for music, and the rest for apps so this is a great way for me to laze around and quickly watch a film or TV show without worrying about syncing.

For reference I have 6TB of rips now.. all which are ready to play on an iPad. Nom nom nom (using the transcoding option).

£1.79 in the app store :)

The voice of reason! Thank you so much :D
But still dont know what to do... and thanks for reminding me about the iPhone dammit! I have to factor that purchase as well come June!

Its a great app. Use it on my iTouch.
It says you can use it through 3G. i used my phone to make a wi-fi connection through its 3g and it was way to slow (didn't even show the movies)

But on my home wireless its great :D

What did you use to rip your movies?

i wonder if there is any point in waiting till 00:00 to see if they go up on the apple website, or if they will start to sell at start of business hours tomorrow

This is beautifully ambiguous on the topic:

Similarly, the iPad warranty says this:

No wonder you are getting mixed messages. Sounds like one of those that may depend on who exactly you talk to, and how they are feeling, when you run into issues...

I've gone a bit of research...

The Standard 1 Year Warranty
http://images.apple.com/legal/warranty/docs/NA_iPad_Warranty_v20.pdf

"Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the hardware product." I guess that means they may or they may not.... how decisive!
"If you seek service in a country that is not the country of original purchase, you will comply with all applicable import and export laws and regulations and be responsible for all custom duties, V.A.T. and other associated taxes and charges. Where international service is available, Apple may repair or exchange defective products and parts with comparable products and parts that comply with local standards. In accordance with applicable law, Apple may require that you furnish proof of purchase details and/or comply with registration requirements before receiving warranty service. Resources with more details on this and other matters on obtaining warranty service are described below." Well I guess that's in the cases where they may provide service.... but no detail is given for how they decided whether they will or won't.

AppleCare Protection Plan for iPad (The extended warranty)
http://www.apple.com/legal/applecare/appforipad.html

This is definitely region specific.
From the USA plan "This Plan is offered and valid only in the United States of America and Canada. This Plan is not offered to persons who have not reached the age of majority. This Plan may not be available in all states or provinces, and is not available where prohibited by law." and from the European plan "This Plan is offered and valid only in Austria, France (including Corsica and excluding overseas departments and territories), Germany, Ireland, Italy, Spain (including Balearic Islands but excluding Canary Islands, Ceuta, Melilla), Switzerland, Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg and the United Kingdom. This Plan is not offered to persons who have not reached the age of majority. This Plan may not be available in all states or provinces, and is not available where prohibited by law." And as for the question as to whether a USA bought iPad could then be registered with a UK bought APP, this is currently unknown. With the MacBooks you definitely can (I remember seeing masses of cheap USA bought ones on eBay!)

Can anyone who's got an iPad check the serial number? It doesn't start with "OMGUSANOTEUROPE111" or something does it?

Would this MIFI thing work with the WIFI verson ? I cant make up my mind for a WIFI of 3G version ?

Yes I use one of those with my touch and it works well.

Thax for that ;

Ok I have dilema then as I am still not sure as to buy a WIFI or 3G version , can some one please help me here .

I have an 02 Contract that has unlimited 3g USE , it was origonaly for an I-phone contract but I got rid of the I phone as it was just to big for me .

How are these WIFI units going to work ? Can I just place my SIM card in it and download as I like ? Changing my phone number is no real biggie at all .

The Wi-Fi models have no SIM card slot so no, you cannot just buy one of the Wi-Fi models and put your sim card in it.

The 3G model however comes with a sim, but unsubscribed and unlocked. You can place any Micro-SIM you want in it. (It HAS to be a Micro-SIM, your iPhone one wont work unless you cut it to size, which you can do if you want).

And finally, yes a MiFi will work with the iPad (Including the Wi-Fi only one). It will work with any Wi-Fi enabled device.

Handbrake I'm assuming.

Nope.

Program called MakeMKV. It doesn't encode video just rips it out and puts it in a MKV container. 100% quality as it doesn't touch the video, but it produces big files (obviously).

Can do Blu-Rays if you have a suitable drive too.
