Sheesh my plain old default XP desktop looks rather boring now

You need an app that can use the icons to replace the windows set. I think there are ways of putting them into a zip file and then Icon Packager can just read the icons from the zip and replace the Windows ones.

You could just use the icons as shortcuts on a widget or docking program such as Avedesk, RK Launcher or ObjectDock.

what app is best? I dont want to buy something just to change them, nor do I want stuck with the icons once a 30 day trial runs out either

The icons on my desktop (post above yours) are from Avedesk, which never runs out and is very customisable. It also lets you use anything you like for this icons - so theres literally no limit.
It's free to download and use, too (though you can donate if you want).

You could use iPhile to replace your icons, they have a new beta release from June 15th which is working well for me.

IPhile is the best way to change the system icons, as mentioned but some people on the net are compiling replacement shell32.dll's which will replace all the system icons with a different set eg. a Windows Vista icon pack. I'm not sure if anyone's finished one yet though.
