For the windows themes, you can download a uxtheme.dll patch (i would give a link but i forget where i got mine from, it was an exe.) so that windows lets you use third party themes. then you just have to download visual styles and double click on them. you do get programs that change the theme but these cost money you see :p

For the system info (like at the top of Raymond Lin's wallpaper) you can use a program called samurize to make your own configs which do anything you program them to do. it looks difficult but it is easy once you're used to it :)

Another program that shows various info is called Konfabulator, which uses widgets that you can download on the website. these widgets have various functions and come in different styles etc.

The big icons that you see (drive icons or my computer icons) is Avedesk. this is a great littl program that lets you make shortcuts to anywhere on your pc. you can download images to use as the icons and overall, it is a very customizable program.

The calanders that you see are mostly Rainlender (but i think Konfabulator does this too) and once again, you get downloadable skins for them.

The docks that you see (on the sides of the screen) are either objectdock or yz dock. both are good but objectdock seems to have more themes/extensions etc. Yz dock is free whereas objectdock isn't, i'm not too sure on how long you can use the trial for.

Other than that, everything else is mainly skins/themes for normal programs. eg. MSN themes, Winamp themes, iTunes themes etc.

A great place to look for wallpapers/icons/visual styles/themes for various programs is deviantART

Just look through this thread, over previous pages, and i'm sure you'll come across more useful things. Hope that helps :)

BTW, just google all the programs mentioned and they are easy to find.

Well firstly you'll need to do a few things before you can apply visual styles. There are 2 main routes that you can go down. Either use .msstyles (same format as windows themes) or you can use Windowblinds themes.

If you decide to use windowblinds then you'll need to download it from the stardock website. You have to pay for the full version however.

If you decide to use msstyles (which I prefer) then you need to patch your uxtheme.dll which can be done in a number of ways, I use the uxtheme patcher from neowin, quick and simple.

Neowin Uxtheme Patcher

Once patched you'll need to find yourself some themes. Try deviantart, neowin forums, customize.org, wincustomize.com or aqua-soft.org for varying styles.

Accessorize!!

Icons: Iconpackager is quite commonly used to change icons. It allows you to change individual icons and also facilitates the downloading of icon packs some of which will change nearly every icon in your system.

Widgets: Little mini-apps on your desktop; a prime example would be CD Covers. There are loads of apps out there that you can use to display them. Konfabulator, AveDesk, Samurize and Kapsules to name the more well known ones.

Wallpapers: Too many sites to mention. Google around a bit and you'll find plenty.

I think that sort of covers the basics and there's plenty of places I've mentioned that you can go too. :)

Of course, being Windows forum this isn't really the right place for this, but .. uhh..

This is a small sample of my GNOME theme. I've added a transparency to Firefox purely for demonstration purposes, so you can see whats coming when MS release Vista. All windows have soft shadows on them. Gnome is using 3d cursors, again with soft shadows, all rendered by the gfx card.
Quite nifty, though this is the first time I've tried it, MPlayer is playing "Cowboy Bebop: The Movie", and is rendering it underneath the semi-transparent Firefox window, with no signs of any slowdown.

Thanks to buggy ATI drivers, this won't work on my little linux box, it'll only work on my 7800gt powered main WinXP/Linux beastie.

So what progs r free and unlimited-am using avedesk and kon whatcha macallit but it still looks pony-what icon packs are good and what do you need to install them etc-soz for being a mega n00blet:(

Ideally Im wanting something dark-black and red-almost goth like and trying to find icons etc and bits that would fit in with that! :p

Well my favourite icon set is definitly Minium or Milkanodized

The best program to use is probably Icon Packager. It'll get the job done without you having to pay for it. Although it is quite a useful app. if you change icons quite a lot.

ok thanks dru-from what Ive read ** a bit of a god with this kinda stuff-is icon packager free or on a trial basis?:p

Thnx a lot for your help!

Also what do you use for the task bar and windows , to change the style and colouring etc etc?

Also cant get that anodisedmilk one to work-any suggestions?

On my system i use the neowin uxtheme patcher that I put on the previous page. Then I just apply an msstyle (currently I'm using area 04).

And yes icon packager is a trial app. You have to buy it to get full functionality but I think you can still use it without registering.

I'll see if I can find the icon packager theme I put together using milkanodized, I lost a lot of my stuff when my hard drive broke so it might take me a while to dig through my backups to see if it's there.

Anything else?? :p :)
