The All New Desktop Thread, Images No Larger Than 800x600

You probably have the wrong bookmarks menu open perhaps? There are two in the customise toolbar dialogue.
 
Well iam clicking on the star icon, then try to middle click a bookmark (BBC) from inside a folder at the bottom of the list, and nothing happens

If nothing happens then one of two things will be the issue:

1: your mouse middle click isn't configured correctly
or
2: you've got incorrect or conflicting settings in one or more firefox extensions

That's the only thing I can think of that would stop middle click from working in the manner I describe
 
Must be 1, as iam on a new profile...

Checking my set point config my logitech revolution middle click is set to 'shift scroll modes'

with linux desktops.
going to take about 50 where the only thing that has changed is the wallpaper to another default on. in ubuntu.
that will teach them.
