How flaming long is the post office taking to deliver stuff

Been just over a fortnight now since my Elfen Lied discs were dispatched...by the time I finally get round to watching them I'll have forgotten what happened in the first 2 & have to watch them again (not that it's a problem or anything :p)
just seems that lately anything I order is taking much longer than expected.

Sat down last night & watched the first disc of Lunar Legend Tsukihime, seems ok, bit of a slow burner this one & VERY confusing, hoping the second disc will start to make things a bit clearer, anybody else seen it?

Also does anyone have a list of series that are in Dolby Digital 5.1?
Since I finally got my AV setup up & running I seem to have started to choose more & more series on the basis of having a full 5.1 soundtrack & it seems that most available here in the UK only have 2.0 DD & they tend to sound quite muddled IMO

Neil

the post office seems to be slow for me as well at the moment (
an average of nearly 3 weeks for stuff from DVDPacific (surface mail), on the plus side it's letting me catch up on some of my backlog :)

It also gives me a chance to read some of the hack manga/books that arrived this morning :)

With regards to anime with 5.1 sound, as far as I know there are no lists that sort by that (although if you want to check on an individual DVD the online listings at shops and the publishers will often state it, as does DVDprofiler usually).
Generally though the R1's will have a 5.1 mix if the Japanese DVD release or TV showing had it, although that isn't a hard and fast rule (Ah! My Goddess TV had 5.1 sound in Japan but only 2.0 in the U.S. and ADV/Bandai/Geonom have all remixed some releases to give the English track a 5.1 where the Japanese track might only have been 2.0).
To confuse matters even further, there are cases where the R1 release differs to the R2/R4 versions, in some cases the R2UK has only 2.0 where the R1 had 5.1 (a couple of ADV-UK's early DVD's*), and in other cases the R2UK/R4 have a language track missing on the R1 (Millenium Actress, GITS: Innocence etc).

Finally, it's worth noting that it tends to be newer series that get the 5.1 treatment (with a few exceptions where really popular series get a rerelease with a remixed sound track**), most of what we get in the U.K. is pretty much the same as the R1 in terms of sound.

*ADV-UK for the first few months of operation as a seperate company didn't have 5.1 authoring facilities in the U.K., which led to some of their early DVD's not having the same sound tracks as the R1's (Noir and Rahxephon both had 2.0 tracks for the first disk, whilst getting 5.1 the same as the R1's for disk 2 onwards).

**Cowboy Bebop and Evangelion are both examples of that, there was also a remastered Nadesico R1 which had 5.1 sound - unfortunately ADV seem to have lost the rights to it as it's OOP.

phalanx, i've seen bits of it which have peaked my interest :)

It's worth watching it as the first 20 episodes are great (since they're all character backgrounds) but I was incredibly disapointed with the end of the series. Made it seem like such a waste of time

FF VII: Advent Children arrived this morning and I've just finished watching it.

OMG! :D :D :D

Watched the game catch up first and it brought back happy memories then the main film just blew me away.

Beautiful, just beautiful. It really provided a good ending to the story and it was great to see all the characters looking flash. Fun spotting all the nods to the game as well.

Music was stunning and the dub was very good as well. The graphics were  , honestly I had to blink a few times to remind myself it was CGI and the action scenes were fantastic.

If you ever enjoyed FF VII and haven't ordered this yet then you should, now, straight away.

The bit where "that" music plays is just ooooooh!

is this film stand alone?
i.e.do we need to have seen the previous epps(if there are any) :)

AFAIK the film is set after Final Fantasy 7 the game so there arent any Episodes to watch before it but if your like me & never actaully played the game then the recap on the disk that Loopstah mentioned will be a god send :D

Werewolf,

Thanks for the info.
I was kind of hoping that when series were redubbed for US/UK market they would add a 5.1 soundtrack but from what you said they cant do it :(
Oh well guess it's just 2.0 then for the older stuff & hopefully 5.1 for newer stuff.
As for the post office delay I actually paid for priority shipping so was hoping it would be have been here by now :(

Well it helps if you played the game as the story has a lot more meaning if your a fan. It should still be a good film if you haven't played the game although some of it might be a bit confusing.

It's worth checking out just for the animation quality though even if you know nothing about the setting.

The recap is pretty much just clips from the game dealing with major story points mixed in with the FMV clips although it should provide some idea of the background.

63 pages and I didn't know this small anime community existed :p

A quick brief on what I've got and seen:

-Hunter X Hunter + OVA + Greed Island + Greed Island Final (top of my anime list)
-Angel Heart (sort of associated with City Hunter story)
-Appleseed
-Banner/Crest of the Stars I, II, III + Birth
-Black Cat
-Bleach (still getting more episodes from my friend, heard it isn't finished yet)
-Captain Tsubasa + New Captain Tsubasa (watched it as a kid, followed sequel at Hong Kong in 1989, didn't watch subsequent sequels though)
-Chrono Crusade
-City Hunter 1 + 2 + 3 + '91 (all on VHS :D)
-Count Of Monte Cristo (got recently, watching atm)
-Cowboy Bebop
-Doraemon series
-Dragonball Z + GT
-Elfen Lied
-Ghost in the Shell + GitS 2 + SAC + SAC 2nd GIG
-Grave of the Fireflies
-Great Teacher Onizuka
-Gungrave (didn't really like)
-Gunslinger Girl
-Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children
-Fist of the North Star + 2
-Fullmetal Alchemist + Conqueror of Shambala
-Full Metal Panic! + The Second Raid + Fumoffu (didn't really like apart from Fumoffu)
-Heaven and Earth + Ultimate Fight
-Hellsing (didn't really like, but couldn't say I hated it either)
-Infinite Ryvius (didn't really like)
-Kiki's Delivery Service (watched this in cinema in Hong Kong back in '89, was brilliant :))
-Inuyasha (threw away, dragged on for so long and the anime didn't even finish)
-Madlax
-My Hime (didn't really like)
-Monster (fantastic anime series for those looking for a good story)
-My Neighbor Totoro (another anime watched in Hong Kong, loved it)
-Naruto (got part of it, gave up after episode 142 as it reminded me of Inuyasha, dragging on and on and on)
-Peace Maker Kurogane
-RahXephon
-Rurouni Kenshin + Trust & Betrayal (haven't got sequel yet, heard it was disappointing, Trust & Betrayal is fantastic)
-Samurai Champloo
-Samurai Deeper Kyo
-School Rumble
-Scrapped Princess
-Shinseiki Evangelion (don't understand the hype behind this anime, seems over-rated IMO)
-Speed Grapher (didn't really like)
-Spirited Away
-Stratos 4 (didn't get sequel)
-The Place Promised In Our Early Days
-Tokyo Underground
-Trigun
-Tsubasa Chronicle (awaiting sequel)
-Twelve Kingdoms

Might have missed a few animes from the list, watched too many in my life time. Source most of my collection from YesAsia who have never failed on me, seems cheaper than most places though language availability can be annoying (as well as DVD region for some).

Anyone seen Samurai 7 or Scrapped Princess?
Scrapped Princess is worth watching, has some good moments in the anime, story does drift and drag on a bit and sometimes rather predictable... and holy batman, you have one hell of a big DVD collection :p

Dont you find importing from Japan Expensive?
whish i had the time and energy to learn the Japanes
It isn't too expensive when comparing prices to HMV and the likes, it is only a few quid more at most apart from the new stuff which you can't get at the high street :)

The only thing costing an arm and a leg would be animes that are sold at a few episodes at a time which mounts up to over £100. Hunter X Hunter would be a good example, my friend spent over £500 on the full series including sequel :( Good thing I got to borrow it from him though a single scratch on the DVDs would make him go berserk.

As for learning Japanese, I'm still an amateur :p

Over the weekend besides watching Advent Children I've also watched:

Vampire Princess Miyu TV, not as dark as the OVA I thought but a pretty good series with a suprise at the end. I enjoyed this even though it was a pretty similar scenario each episode.

Spriggan, a bit like a Sci-fi Indiana Jones, looked nice but I wouldn't say the story was that good. Plenty of explosions though so that's good enough for me.

Dominion Tank Police Acts 1-2 & 3-4, I really enjoyed this. Funny, a good story and you can tell it's from Shirow Masamune. Even though it's a bit old I thought it was great.

New Dominion Tank Police, slightly different from the first one, but not too different. Not quite as funny either but still a good story. You just can't go wrong with tank police. :D

We like to keep it low key :p

I haven't had much time to watch anime the past couple of weeks, too many other things eating at my time :/ (the "Wire", Prison Break, 24 etc, and the garden*/house).

However I have been reading the .hack manga and i'm really enjoying it, it's pretty fun and some of the comments had me laughing out loud - Shugo's comments about the poor graphics in the World in book 1, followed about apage later by his comment about "great use of bump mapping" ;)
Book two also has a few bits that seem darker than the Twilight anime *spoilers*In the anime the Cobolt Knights deleting player characters seemed harsh, in the manga it seems they also hunt down and delete/kill AI's which if they are true AI's as seems the case with some of them, then surely it's murder?*spoilers*

Loopstah, i'd have to agree with you about DTP, it's fun and classic Shirow, the Puma twins aren't just limited to DTP either (they make cameo's in some of his other stories).
I remember watching it for the first time and killing myself laughing at the land mines (I was about 14, so I can't be blamed for finding that hilariou - I still think it's funny), and the jokes about the urine samples etc.

*I've assured my masculinity for the next couple of months by the judicious use of a chainsaw in public, I can now watch the likes of Angelic Layer and Wedding Peach (or at least a few episodes:p) without feeling ashamed, or the need to go out and buy a pink shirt.

Just finished watching The Vision of Escaflowne. Fantastic. :D

I thought the story was great, the characters interesting and the whole thing worked well. It's amazing how dramatic someone singing Esca-flowne to some music can be while two guymelefs chop each other up.

I hear Fushigi Yuugi is a similar idea without giant robots, anyone seen that? Is it good?

Escaflowne is good, some pretty unexpected bits if memory serves (I really need to rewatch it), and some great music :)

I'm afraid I haven't seen Fushigi Yuugi (or heard about it that I can remember), so can't comment on it :(

I just got my Captain Tylor DVD's through, no customs charge :D (makes up for getting a charge on Gits SAC 2-4 for it being 5-10p over the limit;)).
First impressions, without even opening the plastic wrapping is that Rightstuf have made quite a nice couple of sets*, the boxes/artwork are certainly good (and the boxes look to be very sturdy box in box types, similar to the Boogiepop box set), although shorter than a normal DVD case? (somewhere between CD case and DVD case in height).

Cruiser, if memory serves none of the U.K. Urotsukidoji releases were uncut, with the third and forth ones being extremely heavily cut (from about 2 hours each to 45 minutes or something like that).
IIRC the unedited version released in the U.S. (with all 4 OVA series) is something like 11 hours long. There was also a remade version released a couple of years ago, which i think was basically the first ovas again (but better animation from what i've heard).

It's worth noting that the series, when uncut is I beleive deamed "obscene" by the British censors and customs - so if you import it and it's picked up by customs (if the title is on the package, or they open the package) it will almost certainly be confiscated and destroyed.

*They only release a very small number of DVD's compared to the likes of ADV, but when they release a box set they really do tend to push the boat out in terms of extra's/box quality.

The overfiend saga is indeed pretty damn nasty but is worth seeing if you can get past all the sex

The full saga goes...

Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Overfiend
Urotsukidoji: Legend of the Demon Womb
Urotsukidoji: Return of the Overfiend
Urotsukidoji: Inferno Road
Urotsukidoji: New Saga

All can be bought from DVD Boxoffice or DVD Pacific in 2 boxsets (Hell on Earth: Vol's 1-4 & the New Saga collection)

Neil

EDIT: Just got in from work to find a lovely package on my doormat containing volumes 3 &4 of Elfen Lied at last :D:D
Also there was a giant customs charge note on the front that states "This package cannot be delivered until thes charges are paid" well clearly it can...because I havent :D lol
Got off a £7 charge lightly there me thinks ;)

Soundwave sounds like your sorting office either isn't very organised, or your postie really likes you ;)
Our sorting office rarely seems to have anything go wrong (so very few lost letters for me:)), but also never seems to miss collecting fees if they've been charged :(

Re the Urotsukidoji DVD's, the chances are they are in the DVDPacific Adult section ;)

Finally, I finished the hack//twilight manga earlier and it was definately fun to read, and the story was rather different to the anime version - i'm sure I recognised some of the characters who were not named ;)

My Volume One of Elfen Lied turned up today so I can watch the series at last as 2,3 and 4 turned up last week. From the box blurb and cover art I think it's going to be an interesting experience.

Watched Stratos 4 + the OVA today. A nice little series. The makers seem to like panty shots but the fanservice wasn't as over the top as some I've seen. For an anime about schoolgirls flying jets it had an interesting story.

Urotsukidoji looks interesting but It sounds a bit over the top for my tastes.

Just got Ghost in the Shell

Loving it. Is the series any good (please no spoilers) and how many series are there? How many films are there?

I thought the story line and artistic talent involved was fantastic.
