Hi a newby when it comes to anime, but ive done some research and i like the look of the following:
Gangtz
karas
fullmetal alchemist
samurai 7

I ordered karas and samurai 7 already so when i finished ill get the rest.
Have i made a mistake and picked terrible anime or are they GOLD:)

I enjoyed Samurai 7 (I have the US BR release) and Full Metal Alchemist is ok ... haven't see the other two.

The main romance story is definately one of it's huge points....
....It certainly is a weird take on the mecha genre, with tributes to the old Raideen series as well.

Yeah, the series is a bit of a head**** so far (just seen episode 5).

Its definately not straight forward, although there seems to be something between that Haruka character and Ayato (she's only just met him, yet seems to care FAR too much about what he thinks, like she has a bit of an emo period when he doesnt want her to escort him somewhere because he felt betrayed, plus if I do the figuring out, the characters are probably meant to be about 5-10 years apart in age [I dont think specific ages have been mentioned, or not that I noticed, I could have missed something] and also between the outside world and the bubble world I think they said was 10/12 years, so...perhaps they knew each other?), theres also that Megumi character, the younger sister, not quite sure where she fits in but as Ayato and her seem to be similar ages so I could make guesses, the list goes on.

Its just a little bit confusing, so Im not quite sure yet whether I want to watch it or not, as there's not much really clicking so far yet, beyond some very general basics :/

....

Spent some more of this morning cataloguing my Anime DVDs ... now have ~4 Billy sized shelves worth left to do plus the Japanese releases (~2 shelves). Quite surprising at the moment how much is R2, I'd have expected proportion to be quite a bit lower than it is (at the moment it's probably 5:3 R1:R2).

Well finished most of the non-R2(JP) stuff ... maybe a few more to add after I review what I would like to get rid of ...

R1 = 216
R2 (UK) = 126
R2 (JP) = 9 (but very incomplete)
R3 (TW) = 1
BR (any region) = 11 (probably a couple more JP ones to come)

Where 1 can be a series, an OVA or a film. An OVA or series is counted as 1 if it is a boxset or even if it is a number of singles. A second series is counted separately.

Quite surprised how that boils down on R1, for instance by publisher ...
ADV = 40
Bandai = 30
Funimation = 29
Pioneer/Geneon = 46
Media Blasters = 22
Nozomi = 20
Sentai = 13
Viz = 4

With the rest being spread across various small companies.

I'm quite surprised that Geneon and Nozomi are not smaller and Funimation and Sentai are not larger. Viz is also a lot smaller than I was expecting.

that breakdown sounds similar to how mine goes for the UK/US releases.
IIRC ADV (as was) accounts for about 160 entries Bandai about 90, Fun about 40, and Nozomi 6, CPM and animeworks about 5 each.

Although that isn't just full series or OVA's/Films.

bakes, I'm afraid i havent' seen either Karas (although i've got the blu on pre-order) or Sanuriai 7, but I think S7 is meant to be good from memory.

Full Metal Alchemist is certainly good for the bulk of it, with some good surprises.

I thought that grouping things was a bit better to keep things more manageable than have separate entries for each individual disk, otherwise ADV alone would have been ~110+ entries across UK and US and Pioneer/Geneon ~130+ individual disks

Boxsets instead of singles + artboxes also reduces the number of entries if things were counted separately.

Doesn't address the lack of shelf space issues though ;)

It's even more weird than you think! The main character is only 13 years old :p

Yeah the series makes heavy use of some imagery and foreshadowing, so it will get confusing at first, but time you are in around the second half of the series, some things will start to make sense. Episode 17 is very weird and creepy and foreshadows a lot of things to come with regards to character relations.

I love the soundtrack in this series though. The Dolems thesmelves scare the **** out of me sometimes because of the sounds they make. Very creepy.

I really need to give the series another chance at some point, I dropped it last time around the 8-10 mark but that was quite a while ago now.

Finished ToLoveRU this evening, moderately funny with plenty of fan service but they could have done with shortening the run by 2 or 3 episodes. They could have lost some pointless weak episodes and still been as long as other two cour series.

Next ... no sure yet; it's currently between Pt. #1's of Rental Magica, Soul Eater, Yozakura Quartet or, less likely, Ghost Hunt (the latter I will probably actually watch the weekend after next (finishing Gundam SEED next weekend).

ToLoveRu was fine at first until they started diverging off from the original Manga material and into some of it's own thing.

Rental Magica is a decent series (Hey it's Lelouch!), but the order of which the episodes is shown is non-linear so it does gets a little confusing. Very nice opening song though, both a Japanese and English version. And Adelicia is one of my favourite "Ojou-sama" type characters. :p

Anyone been watching Durarara? It's got some pretty entertaining characters lol, im liking it so far. Also found it its from the same author as Baccano which i tried to get into a while ago but couldn't so i thought i'd give it another shot, and im finding it pretty good.

Well I managed to find a remastered version of Escaflowne, and jesus christ it doesnt half look better than the DVD, depressing really!
Im not fully into it right now, but at least its watchable :)

My 'to watch' list is currently:
Escaflowne (remastered edition as it actually looks decent)
RahXephon (maybe)
Beck
Hellsing
Full Metal Panic! (Original/Fumoffu/TSR)

With Black Lagoon and Gurren Lagann both on my high priority rental list.

Given I dont tend to sit down and devour series like some people here (except for Spice and Wolf), I reckon these should last me at least a couple of weeks, unless I get bored part way through any of them.

I need to go rewatch S&W with the english dub to try and see how it changes the season and portrayals in the future as well, but I dont want to watch it yet as I've seen both seasons twice in the last month (once by myself and once with my brother).

Yeah I'm watching Durarara along with a few others (vampire loli for example). It hasn't exactly got a plot but I'm enjoying it none the less. Keep meaning to look out for Baccano too but seem to forget :)

Just finished disk 4 of Eureka 7, which I'm really enjoying (although definite Eva similarities:p).
I suspect I'm going to end up being rather impatient for the second set to arrive later in the month :)

What episode are you up to? I'm guessing around 20? If the part 1 box set ends at ep 25 then yes you really are.

Just ordered Serial Experiments Lain myself, such a good series. Will try and get back to watching Texhnolyze as well, enjoyed the first 3 episodes but kind of drifted from it, not really sure why.

I'm slowly getting back into the Anime scene. Need to order a few R1 DVD's and the odd Blu-Ray but was wondering the current best place to order these from now. DVD Pacific are currently doing an update so waiting for that to happen, but are these as good as they used to be?

Any box set recommendations? having bought so many single disc series i'm trying to avoid doing this and pick up a bargain a year or two after release.

DVD Pacific are ok although for ordering from the US TRSI tends to be the preferred source now. Personally I tend to use United Publications in the UK as they will deliver to me at work and I don't have to worry about customs charges, (although they can be a bit more expensive particularly for R2 releases (Amazon can be cheaper for UK releases)).

Unless you are getting series from Media Blasters then most modern releases on R1 are either in half or full-season sets now from the get go.

Recommendations really depend on what sort of thing you like ....
Kanon (new S.A.V.E. edition boxset is a steal)
Clannad (Pt1 & Pt2 boxsets)
Clannad After Story (Pt1 & Pt2 boxsets)
Eureka 7 (new R2 release at £15 per part for 2 part (2nd out on 22/03) is really cheap).
Spice & Wolf (boxset)
Bamboo Blade (Pt1 & Pt2 boxsets)

edit: If you have the original series of You're Under Arrest then Sentai have released the second (Fast & Furious) and the first half of the third (Full Throttle) series (with the second half of the latter due in May) in half season sets as a reasonable price point.

Give us some pointers and we'll happily tell you how to spend your money :D.

Throw in Elfen Lied and Full Metal Panic (NOT Alchemist...although thats not bad either)as recommendations too. Also definately Spice and Wolf, IF you dont mind something a bit slower :)

Note I see anything that offers an episode at £1 or less as being good value

So I'll throw in (all region 2)
ghost in the shell (if not purchased already - £20 each + 8 for films),
claymore - single box set not split (£25 iirc)
fate stay night (3 packs for about £10 each but not all out yet)
black lagoon - double pack of 1st and 2nd barrage (will probably come down soon but both can be had together for £30)
Eureka Seven is a must in my opinion especially at 30 quid all in
Could do gundam seed/destiny and wolfs rain for 15 quid a box set (30/30 and 15 per set) via anime legends packaging
Mezzo (£10)
Noein (£15 iirc)
Black Brothers (£10)

Also check Zaavi for your anime as that seems to be cheaper on some things than amazon :)

But like said - more pointers and we'll empty your bank account :)
