There's a distinct lack of guitar-dedicated threadery in these parts. I read dmpoole's "should-I-dump-my-beautiful-old-guitars-for-another-new-one" thread with great interest and had to restrain myself from hijacking it for my own purposes.

So here we go - a thread dedicated to anything guitar-orientated: New models, playing advice, gear advice - whatever you can think of.

A bit about me.

I'm 48 years old and have owned guitars since I was 16. I am still an absolute beginner - I have mild asberger's, enough to make learning anything new a real chore. If I sit down with a well tabbed piece (I don't read music, natch) I can knock out something reasonable after some hours practice. Next time I pick up the guitar I seem to have forgotten everything, so it's like starting afresh every time.

Sigh.

The answer is obviously practice, practice, practice and see if there's really any truth in that mythical muscle memory stuff :D

I own several guitars, all "cheap": A Tokai SG Custom copy (wanted to be Angus...), a lovely Squier Telecaster, an also-lovely Ar|a S-type, HSH with coil tap and licensed Floyd Rose DL trem (and what a pain in the butox those are!), a "no-name-but-still-nice" electro-acoustic cutaway, a rather awesome 12 string electro-acoustic (known brand but I forget) - plus a Squier P-bass, a mandolin and a banjo.

Currently trying to learn Hallowed be thy Name on the Tele. More suited to the Ar|a, but my son's "borrowed" that - damn kids and their natural talent :(

Acquire a copy of Guitar Pro and go to Ultimate Guitar for your Guitar Pro files and you'll never look back.
Guitar Pro is so powerful that I will post up the MP3 song and Guitar Pro file to my 3 band members and at the next gig we will just play the song without rehearsing.

Oh, and I don't mind anybody hijacking or derailing any of my threads.

Ooh what colour is the SG copy?

It's a real one -

I think he was talking about mine, dm - and it's black :)

Already got Guitar Pro, an awesome piece of software. I get most of my practice in when I'm on nights (shhh!) - so the great printouts that Guitar Pro generates are very useful.

Maiden songs are frustrating to learn as (to me, at least) Dave and Adrian's parts don't sound quite right in isolation. Some tab writers have the annoying habit of trying to combine the two for a solo guitarist and that's just terrible. The simple opening to "Hallowed..." features both guitarists playing their parts, Dave on the A string and Adrian on the B. One tab I saw had both versions played on one guitar, using the pinky and index fingers - there was one impossible part (agin, for me) that had the index finger hammering on whilst the pinky was sliding - my fingers just don't do that!

Been playing since I was 11

I have 2 guitars now.. Epiphone Sheraton II and a Washburn N2.

I've never played a guitar thats as good as my epi but I'm always on the lookout for new gear thats not the norm.

A mate of mine that has a Tokai swears that its the best he's played so just cos its a copy doesn't mean its poo.

I'm also thinking about building my next guitar (prob gonna be a bass). I've stripped and rebuilt an old squier strat for my eldests 15th that he loves.

Sorry wrong thread.
I mentioned I had an SG knocking about somewhere :D

Vaguely rings a bell :D

Funny story about my Tokai SG-a-like. My son had just started playing on a terrible &80 Strat copy and it gave me the urge to try again. I was on a course in a building off Leicester Square, so it was a simple matter of toddling down to Denmark Street in my lunch break. Said to the guy in one of the famous shops, "you know how all budget guitars are either Strat knock offs or LP knock offs? Do you have any SG knock offs?" :D

As I can't embarrass myself by demoing a guitar instore, I just had it boxed up and carted it home. Only then did I notice it was a custom. THREE humbuckers? That just ain't right - how am I gonna look like Angus now?

Since you have an interest in ACDC you may be interested in our latest venture.
This is a very poor film taken by somebody I don't know in the audience but the only film of us doing a tribute to ACDC.
Every now and then we will dress up and do over an hour of ACDC in our last set but we're not charging extra or calling ourselves an ACDC tribute because we sound nothing like them.

Look forward to seeing that clip when I get home :)

I've been a rabid fan of AC/DC since 1980 (yeah, at least a year too late) but very recently I've totally gone off them. Just seen one documentary/magazine article too many that state that the Young bros are a right pair of gits, to put it bluntly. They haven't made a great album since Back in Black (second biggest selling album of all time, fact fans!) and while their stage show is as good as ever, Brian's voice just can't do it any more.

Saw Maiden at the O2 last month as a contrast, Bruce's voice was the best I've heard it in absolute ages. Wonder if he's had work done?

What is the most expensive guitar you guys have seen in person? In the music shop I go to, there is a £17,000 Fender Strat in a glass case. It was either a 1962 or 1972, I don't really remember. I'm sure you could all beat me easily though? :)

The most expensive guitar I've played at a gig was probably a 1963 Strat? At a guess around £20,000?

I've played a 58 LP (most expensive I've played?!) but I didn't gig it. :p

I tried to google the value of a 58 LP, was difficult to find but a blog told me it was worth between $240,000 and $420,000. Is that accurate?

If so ****ing hell

A couple of years later and they become $7,000-$11,000

I was in some crappy shop in Brighton last week - not one of the rather nice guitar shops, this place basically just sold t-shirts. They had a couple of guitars in display cases behind the till that had been signed by famous bands (I forget who - might have been Kiss) and they wanted £2500 each for them. They were Squier Strats...
