The "All-Things-Guitar" Thread

Another anecdote.

My nephew is 10 years old and has passed grade 8 at drumming and a really proud Uncle I am.
About a month ago I came home and my wife met me in the drive to tell me that Ryan was in the house with a guitar and he was going to play Wonderwall to me so prepare myself!
Of course I smirked because I know he had only had this acoustic guitar about a week before.
He started to play and I actually had to walk out with tears in my eyes because he was actually playing it.
I walked back in, he asked what was up and I just said it was brilliant but I would show him properly.
What he had done was learn some chords like Em G D A and struck them together to make Wonderwall but of course Noel does play it differently.
A week later he came back and played the verse correctly and then the rest of it correctly which I had never learnt.
He was also playing ACDC Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be which I taught him very quickly.
I then showed him very slowly Sweet Child Of Mine (which I can't do at full speed) and Back In Black by ACDC.
he came back this week and started playing them at nearly full speed.
I commented that I had never learnt the end phrase of the main lead riff of Sweet Child Of Mine and when he was leaving he shouted "See you Uncle Dave, when I come back next week I'll show you how to play it" :D
My daughters and wife were wetting themselves.
I'm so proud.

I've talked him into staying on the acoustic for at least another 6 months, maybe until next Christmas so that when he gets onto electric it will be easy peasy.

That Tokai SG copy looks nice - they are little known but usually very well built good quality guitars - i'm always on the lookout for Yamaki acoustics as well - they were made in the same factory under different branding but are usually very nice guitars.

Back in the 70s Gibson tried to take some kind of injunction out on them because they were better than their own guitars.

This isn't quite true, The famous Gibson law suit has often been exagerated and was mainly focussed on the shape of the headstock as these copies were obviously infringing Gibsons copyright 'open book' headstock. There was no broad law suit against multiple makers.

Th Japanese guitars of the 80's were undoubtedly brilliant but the misuse of the law suit term is irritating!

I may have mentioned my 14 year old son Nick and his expensive guitar...
Proud as punch, me :D

And so you should be, nice talent but it's a shame that later on I couldn't tell who was doing what.
Sneak into his bedroom and get him doing a Gustov.

It was the 70s and we didn't have the internet.
Every guitar shop you went into to try and buy a Tokai told the same story.

He was playing Sweet child of Mine on an acoustic? Ouch :p

Trying to play SCOM very slowly :)

I know this style of music might get bashed by a lot of you but I was looking for some help on figuring out this small riff.

I have checked many tab site but they all seem to be wrong and I am having trouble trying to perfect it myself.

All help would be greatly appreciated.

The riff in question starts at 1:26 and finishes at 1:37. It is then repeated again at 2:14-2:24. Then finally at 3:24-3:51

Thank you

I said I was gonna, so I did.

This is the single most awesome thing I've ever owned.

(edit) It's actually heritage cherry, not bright red as it may appear. Cameraphone with a photographic knob operating it, I'm afraid.

This is the pattern - arpeggiate the phrase in a medium high register. Sorry about the mouse-writing but I though it was clearer than trying to do repeat symbols with text!!

No, I quite like my fingers the length they are, thanks ;)

I've had at least 3 Gibson SG's over the last 41 years but none as nice looking as yours.
When we do the ACDC tribute we borrow an SG off a friend and it plays amazingly -

My lead guitarist owns 6 Strats so is uncomfortable playing the SG.

Played guitar for around 11 years but after playing in numerous bands, ive decided to go down a different route and take up drumming. Sold my Marshall JCM 900 half stack to fund an electronic kit to practice at home. Ive had it a month so far and ive had more satisfaction in 1 month playing drums then I ever did playing guitar. I hope the gamble is worth it!

Will keep a close eye on this thread.

That's awesome, Steve!

It's easy to forget that the most important thing about playing music is enjoying yourself.

Hope those drums have a headphone socket though :D
