The "All-Things-Guitar" Thread

I tried to google the value of a 58 LP, was difficult to find but a blog told me it was worth between $240,000 and $420,000. Is that accurate?

If so ****ing hell

A couple of years later and they become $7,000-$11,000

Not sure. I think it's probably more £25k?

It's a real one -

Hang on a minute - that's that rare beast, a non-valuable, rare guitar - an SG-200!

(In fact, a minor piece of detective work tells me it's Colin's "shitehawk" :D)

That's right, owned by me.
It's in an attic now - probably.

Most expensive guitar I've seen: A Jeff Beck custom shop for £30,000
Most expensive guitar I've played: Probably my mates Steve Vai DNA

Every now and then we will dress up and do over an hour of ACDC in our last set but we're not charging extra or calling ourselves an ACDC tribute because we sound nothing like them.
Finally got home to watch it...

Despite the crappy video quality I could tell that was a great Highway cover! Your singer couldn't have done much better without crippling his vocal cords :D

That's me, I don't play guitar in that band :)
I don't have any problems vocally with that material.

Loads more here and better quality but we're not dressed up - www.disturbinthepeace.co.uk click on Media

Ooh what colour is the SG copy? I fell in love with a cherry tanglewood tsb 67 which is essentially another SG copy. Definitely preferred playing it to the squier strat or tele plus the guy in the shop was recommending it.

Again? This isn't the first time Gibson have been nobbled for allegedly smuggling protected hardwoods.

There will be interesting repercussions if this and the still-unresolved case from 2009 find against Gibson. A reduction in outrageous guitar prices will sadly not be part of that...

Slightly unrelated but last week I went into the local guitar shop for some strings, usually order them on the net but I was passing the shop so just nipped in there instead. Saw this goldtop Burny Les Paul for £399 with P90s on it. I've not bought any new guitars for about 15 years now so I don't really look to try them in shops, but this one was on a stand right next to me and it caught my eye as it looked good. Turns out it was probably one of the best I've played, absolutely stunning feel to it, especially for the price. Fit, finish and setup are all spot on. After playing an Epiphone LP for years and years, picking this thing up was a night and day difference. Like I say I'm not really into buying new axes nowadays but I'm quite tempted to nip back for that.

This was a make along with Tokai that scared the hell out of Gibson in the 70's and they tried to get them banned.
Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols was a famous Burny Les Paul player and what a great sound he made.

I've got a general guitar question;

What sub £1000 50W or less head used for all levels of distortion?

I was looking at a new Marshall on Sunday that emulates all the famous Marshall amps of the past: http://www.marshallamps.com/product.asp?productId=152

What's it being used for? Home practice? Recording? Gigging? Venue size? All genres, Rock/Metal?

The only amps I've found to cover lot's of tonal bases on a footswtich...

Rackmounts JMP1/EL34 50:50 Marshall, ADA MP1/EL34 50:50. Both Rackmount systems. Okay clean/crunch, okay overdriven, nice distortion.
Mesa Mark Series (IV/V). Nice clean/crunch, nice overdrive, okay distortion.
Rivera Fandango - Nice clean, Nice od, okay distortion.

Some of the hugehes and Kettner big ones ar supposed to be nice too...

For me, if possible I tend to prefer single channel amps (Vox AC, Fender DR, marshall Plexi).
But in a covers project thats not always viable so when I need a selection of sounds I use a Mesa Mark IV (at the Moment ;) ) . (Although I'm looking at a JMP1 into PA (i.e. without the bloody heavy power amp!! Man, they are so heavy! Not again!) for times when I need to travel even lighter/smaller! :p)

Steve Hackett and Robert Fripp also use them, a little nosing around reveals.

If it's good enough for Fripp...

I'm starting a new band/project, I have a mesa mark IIa which does clean/overdrive well. I want something with an effects loop that can do go from post rock (65dos) and heavy (sylosis) with some RATM thrown in for good measure :p. I don't have 2K for a Mark V I'm afraid.

Have been looking at a Cornford Roadhouse, or possibly something from Blackstar.

I'm not really into emulation from an amplifier, I could just use amplitube on my DAW.

I am twenty one years old, have been playing the guitar for nine years, nearly ten. I have been taking the guitar seriously for about five years now, and ninety per cent of my ability has appeared in that time. I love playing all kinds of styles, but jazz, country, rock and 'acoustic' would have to come at the top of the list. I have played alongside/shows with Albert Lee, Frank Vignola, Tommy Emmanuel and Martin Harley (some of you may know who he is :p).

If any of you are interested, the tracks from my EP have been uploaded to my ReverbNation account:

I hope you enjoy. ;)

And as for the collection, I own about twelve guitars but the top of the bunch are:

Taylor 214, not my most expensive guitar, but I have owned it since new and played it to death. Tommy told me that he thought it was a 'beautiful guitar, but you do hammer the absolute **** out of it.' :D

Ibanez GB100, a thing of absolute beauty. Each of my fingers orgasms when I'm playing a solo on it with my jazz band.

Suhr Pro S5, there's a picture of me with it in the gear thread, and it is as good an electric guitar as I have played. It plays, feels and sounds fantastic, I couldn't ask for more out of an instrument.

Maton EBG808, it has the best acoustic guitar pickup in existence, the Maton APMic. It plays like an electric guitar, and even if the build quality is awful (which it is), the thing is still a bit of a dream.

Other guitars include: Epiphone 295 (Japanese acoustic guitar from 1968), Danelectro U2, Antoria strat copy, Danelectro DC silver sparkle bass guitar, Epiphone SST Classic, Taylor GS Mini, Fender Newporter acoustic, and a few others that I can't remember at the moment. :D

Ritche Blackmore.
Ah yes, forgot he uses one.

No, I had Dave Murray in mind when I bought it. There isn't a model in production that mirrors exactly what he uses as his main guitar - a Fender "Californian Series" Strat with Seymour-Duncan Hot Rails pups and a Floyd-Rose bridge.

I'm not daft enough to believe that having a similar guitar will make me play similarly - I just enjoy having them! Hence the Tokai for Angus, the HSH Strat-a-like for Adrian Smith and even the blue P-Bass for Steve Harris ^_^

They look good on me wall is all I'm sayin' ;)

*applies CPR to lifeless thread*

Anecdote time.

I may have mentioned my son on here before - he's 14 and learnt more guitar skills in a month than I've managed in 30-odd years.

Anyhoo, he's long since decided that music is going to be his career (but is still sensibly keeping up with other subjects at school) - so he's decided that his Epi Les Paul "isn't good enough" and that he needs a "serious" guitar to enable him to progress with his chosen path.

Yeah, I know, right?

Apparently, the best guitar in the world (ahem) is a Music Man John Petrucci.

http://www.music-man.com/instruments/guitars/john-petrucci.html

Yes, it's a great guitar, just check out the specs. Two buckers with a clever selection - neck bucker, bridge bucker or inside coils of both - plus a piezo for the artsy-fartsy stuff.

The finish is absoultely superb. The colour he chose (check the link and select "mystic dream - the still doesn't do it justice) is extraordinary. I don't know how they do it, but the colour changes depending on your viwing angle - it goes from green to purple. Some sort of magical prismatic paint? I believe this colour option by itself adds £300 to the price.

So, all in all a rather wonderful guitar. But for a 14-year-old? I said no, it's an unnecessary extravagance. The wife said yes - it's his future we're thinking of. I said we can't afford it. She said "I'll ask me mum - she's got something stashed away for the kids' future."

Cue me last friday getting a tube half way across London with two and a half grand in me pocket. Almost worth it to see the expression on the posh chap's face when I pulled out my huge wad in Chappel of Bond Street.

The old dear also stumped up another £500 for recording hard-/software - to which I'll need to add another £200+ because it has to be Avid's Eleven Rack with the full version of Pro Tools 10. Apparently.

Sigh.
