I have not long finished reading the novel Fatherland by Robert Harris which depicts an alternate history where nazi Germany won WWII, secured a peace deal with the United States, defeated the UK and were the likes of Poland are off the map with a Greater German Reich formed.

Are there any other alternate histories that people wish to theorise ?

What if the RAF had been destroyed during the Battle of Britain in 1940 ?

What if Lord Chelmsford had not split his column during the Zulu wars ? Would 1500 troops have survived the Zulu army at Isandlwana ?

What if Harold's troops had held the hill and not took the bait to leave their position and thus allow them to be flanked in 1066 ?

Does anyone have any suggestions ?
 
What if Napoleon had won? We'd all be wearing strings of onions and eating cheese. And living in barns. And building towers. And shoddily made cars. And stockading the ports. And killing our royal family.

It would be mahem I tell you.
 
China come in with Russia in 45 & take Europe then make plans to war the Yanks using GB as a base for Missiles. Yanks Nuke GB then it kicks of Big style between Russia & China v Yanky Doodle dandy land. :cool:

Obviously I am one of the rogue Englanders that live Underground having surprise sex with all the womens to make more Englanders for my future Army. :D
 
I don't think Britain would have been defeated, from a quick research awhile back its likely the Nazis would have pushed 30 miles or so inland and become bogged down in urban and isolated pockets of fighting, with so many other fronts on the go unable to expend the resources required to bulldozer through, eventually pulling back to Belgium, Holland, etc. the coastal parts of which would have become a DMZ well into the 60s/70s. Likewise with Russia they would never completely subdue it, forcing them eventually to pull back to more concentrated lines around moscow.

You do realise how weak we were then dont you ?

Also the Nazis had a willing ally on these Islands being the Irish so they would be ok for supplies etc.

The germans would only have to deploy a few divisions and that would have been it.

In a way you are not really acknowledging how close we were and how Churchills "speach so much owed to so few" was so literal.

We could have won that and gone on to control the Eastern coast of America, supplying troops where needed via the sea. We didn't and so were unable to reinforce Cornwallis at Yorktown.

The Irish would not have been in a position to supply the demands of a war machine required to break this country. We were in a dangerous position and I would never disagree with that, however there was a massive amount of homeguard action designed to resist any invasion attempt, miles of wire, road blocks, anti-tank defenses, bridges rigged, etc. don't underestimate how much a handful of old men and boys with time to plan and a ready supply of improvised weapons could stall the advance of a military machine. They would have to work their way in town by town clearing any resistance that could hamper supply lines or could mount effective rearguard action, etc.

The Nazis wouldnt have needed the Irish to supply their War machine they already were well supplied and stocked.

The Irish would have just made it easier for the Nazis to be supplied in a logistical sense.

and i'm not underestimating Dad's army either but ultimatley the Whermacht would have prevailed in the end.
 
It is of course a very big if, that Germany would win the war. Looking at the war with 20/20 hindsight, the Germans never actually stood a chance. They attacked Russia for God's sake. Nobody attacks Russia and comes out of it better off than they went in.
 
The only way Germany could have won the Battle of Britain would have been a complete change of tactics but that would never happen because by September 1940 Herman Goring, the Luftwaffe top bod, had proved himself not to be up to the task. As he was also one of Hitlers long time cronies he was secure in his position.
Germany had the tools but were badly let down by their leadership.

Heres one for you.............. what if D-Day had failed ?

It would have taken another year for the Western Allies to stock up for another go. Would the Russians have stopped at Berlin, the Rhine, Paris, Madrid ?
What would the post war map of Europe of looked like ?
