The AMD dilemma because of freesync.

Don't get me wrong...for anyone who have yet to buy a Freesync/Gsync monitor, the GTX980Ti is worth considering, as the card itself is okish priced, and the price of Asus ROG Swift monitor has gone down quite a bit as well.

But for anyone who already got a Freesync monitor, it make far more sense to just go with the Fury X, instead of switching camps for cards, and getting rid of existing Freesync monitor to get a Gsync monitor.

Read my first posts ..... I did say getting a 2nd had 290X and waiting for the HBM2 cards is the way to go if OP isn't 100% happy with the fury X
Yes it is certainly an option worth considering.

......Had my Benq freesync screen for quite a while now.......
Boy o boy, got money saved up and all, feel bit bummed by fury X in all honesty....

Complete pointless dithering mate. Get a damn 290X, 390X, hell even a Fury X.

Plug it on the DP of the monitor and do not look back.
All this stupidity about "mine is faster than yours" is completely stupid and irrelevant subject when GSYNC/Freesync is working.

What is the point if 980Ti gets 55fps and the FuryX get 52 if you have freesync monitor?
52 on Freesync looks much better than 55 without it.

Except you want to waste money on changing monitor. That is your call.

You haven't experienced Freesync, that is why you do not know what to do.
Put it on, and you will see all this "eP war of forum posts" is completely and uterly irrelevant and a very big joke.

Hell tbh I regret got the 295X2 and didn't kept the GTX780 buying a GSYNC 2560x1440. It could have cost me less. (almost £600 less after selling the 780).

But that is the only regret against the 295X2, which has proved a SUPERB card, very quiet, cool and very powerful, perfectly matched with the XL2730Z and not going to look back.

And to everyone who said "get 980 and a gsync monitor", is not their money that going to be wasted but yours.

Freesync on the 1440p144 IPS Asus screen is limited to 35-90hz, making it a 90hz screen really.

Absolute crap imho. That's 54hz below the screens max refresh. Very dissapointing, and shows how freesync's lack of brand oversight is making it a far worse solution than gsync.

What? its max is 144hz and min is 40hz...

Assuming you can play all games at over 90fps @ 1440p ....

Unlike g-sync the monitor makers can set the range, so freesync itself gives you options, Unlike gsync. (if i could keep all games running with freesync @ 80fps average id be a very happy man)

<troll>Ill just go plug in my laptop to a Gsync monitor over HDMI without an adapter .... oh wait </troll>

It's not a Freesync limitation but a monitor's limitation though, as for the BenQ's TN the Freesync range is 40-144Hz. And it is not like a single card can go and stay above 90fps in demanding games anyway...best case would be hovering aroud 70~90fps majority of the time.

But nevermind, keep on banging that Freesync is crap drum, and praise the £150-£200 more expensive Gsync...and throw L'Oréal's slogan on it while you are at it.

How anyone can recommend a rog swift when the OP already have a BenQ of equavalent spec and without that dreaded grainy coating is beyond me.

@OP
I use to have 7950 in crossfire. I then went to a 780 and was happy with the purchase, now im sitting on a 980ti and theres a lot of power in it, a much better experience than the 7950s. So my advice would be to get the fury X. Its roughly the same performance as a 980ti and you get it water cooled for less money than a 980ti reference. The 980ti can get very noisy so i think thats a pretty good deal. If i can drive a 3440x1440 at almost max details @60 fps in pretty much every game ive tried(somestimes even max if the game optimized properly) im pretty sure the fury x will eat your 2560x1440 for lunch without a care in the world.

This guy talks sense :)

Well, well, what to say, what to do. Quite baffled as to what to do at the moment regarding my setup. Had my Benq freesync screen for quite a while now. amazing screen, a real thing of beauty playing games. My 7950 crossfire been excellent at keeping the frames well up there at the higher ranges that this screen yearns for, but here is the dilemma. Not been able to see freesync yet because the 7950 is not supported, been waiting and waiting for this FURY X, now it's here I'm just not sold on it. Performance at 1440p seems quite meh, regarding its numbers my aging cards gets pretty much where the Fury X sits (when crossfire bloody works that is). I've been so pumped to get a beast of a high end single card that's going to give me 50% more performance than my 7950 crossfire and finally freesync. Sadly the Fury X looks like a pretty expensive upgrade for what you get at 1440p.

So where the hell do I go from here. Man the 980ti G1 is incredibly tempting, but I want to see freesync in all its glory. Do I buy a 390x to see me through till hbm2/early next year and use freesync at 45fps lol or do I just keep on rolling this 7950 crossfire setup for another 6 months putting up with shoddy AMD drivers with no crossfire support in new games.

The Fury X has disappointed no doubt about it we all thought it would comprehensively beat the 980Ti and possibly the TX and it didn't. However if I were you I would hang on a bit, the card won't sell in big numbers and as a result you can expect the price to drop on it over the coming weeks when boxes collect dust, once the price drops a good bit below the 980Ti say to to £450ish then would be the time to strike.

I have a RoG Swift, which I first ran on 7970/7990 trifire, before going single, then dual 980 when 980 came out.

I came from a 30" 1600p 60hz Dell, so was used to the pixel density.

Going to the RoG was an improvement over the Dell even with the AMD GPUs, just because 144hz was amazing. The increase in refresh meant the GPUs got a lot hotter and louder (I used to use vsync at 60hz) which I didn't like.

GSync with the 980s was a massive improvement. So fluid.

Except that I don't think it's GSync. I use 3DVision and I'm often too lazy to bother switching it off and GSync back on when playing 2D games, and it's also amazing at 120hz with Vsync on the 980s and GSync off.

I think you'd get 95% of the benefit with your 144hz screen and a 980ti, using adaptive sync instead of freesync.

I've decided to wait it out til Win 10 is released in late July then hopefully we'll see some benchmark re-runs :)

Good move as you are not 100% sold on the Fury X, also you wont be able to buy one for £509 much before then anyway (so no real loss). Tho keep an eye out for 290(X) on the 2nd hand market. you could well get yourself a really good deal in the next few days/weeks :)

I stand corrected then.. Still a very nice range though.

Every review has said its a decent monitor - Baddass from TFTCentral posts in the monitor section and they gave it a great review.

Whats even better is AOC have released some budget Freesync monitors:

https://pcmonitors.info/aoc/aoc-g2460pf-and-g2770pf-freesync-gaming-models/

£230!

30 – 160Hz!

160hz WOW! Now am very interested!

edit
Nope ill wait for 1440p :D
