The AMD Driver Thread

Yeah let's all jump to Nvidia, perfect example what they did in Witcher 3 for older generation of gpu with their performance in that game.

AMD is committed to improving performance for the recently-released Project CARS and The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. To that end, we are creating AMD Catalyst™ 15.5 Beta to optimize performance for these titles, and we will continue to work closely with their developers to improve quality and performance. We will release AMD Catalyst™ 15.5 Beta on our website as soon as it is available.
.

No mention of Elite.... It's a popular game, no?

I think I may as well give up hoping on that title.

I just find it astonishing how AMD wouldn't have a driver in place like Nvidia specifically for the title at launch. It's only arguably one of the biggest and most anticipated titles of the last 5 years.

And Matt, you're a gamer, you were here posting as a gamer long before you were a rep, owning multiple cards yourself, you're probably just as pee'd off with lack of crossfire support as the rest of us aren't you. Not that you can say that of course. But you can understand our disillusioned attitude towards AMD now surely, they just don't seem to care any more. All this PR (when it happens which is incredibly rare) really is just fluff and wishy washy, it's the results we want see, that's the only way AMD will stop people moving to Nvidia, can't anyone see that in the company. I'm just totally astonished this is how the company is trying to claw back some profit. To me, it almost feels like the company has given up with it's customers and couldn't care less any more.

AMD suck so bad.
Bored of project cars long before the driver came out GG people..

this is why nvidia are my next choice.

It's like AMD gave up years ago and don't even bother trying to keep gamers happy these days as long as they were selling cards to people mining stupid bitcoins.

oh wrell now your cards suck, your drivers suck and nearly every game is nvidia game works because amd are to cheap and poor to even code a bloody driver in time for a games release never mind work with the devs to optimise a game

I remember the whole promise AMD made when they started catalyst how long did it last? a few revisions at best
AMD got lazy and sloppy again

AMD should have a new slogan "settle for second best" because they clearly have

NVidia's Tom Petersen said it best in one of the interviews he did a while back, he said NVidia are selling an experience which involves the whole GameWorks/software side of it whereas AMD just want to be a hardware seller and then wash their hands of it.

That'll be primarily why they pushed Mantle as it meant developers had to do the majority of the legwork and not them, if there were ever any problems such as the BF4 memory leak the onus was on the developer to fix it (who probably wouldn't bother anyway) and AMD could just sit back and blame them.

Funny i feel the same way about nvidia. So sick of they lack of care for anything but their newest gen. I had to do a bit of tinkering to get witcher 3 to run just somewhat alright on my 780 and the gameready driver for Witcher 3 didnt help me one bit. The way i see it is as following, i can buy expensive latest gen cards from nvidia and get full support pretty quick until they launch a new series at which point i have to tinker my behind off or i can save a lot of money and get more horsepower with AMD for the same amount i would othewise have spent and settle for a bit of tinkering now and again. Im starting to lean heavely toward the later.

its always the same double standard nonsense with you m8. Have nvidia not been howling at the moon at the news of DX12 which have the exact same end result as Mantle? yet i dont see you saying the same thing about your precious nvidia. Im surprised nvidia hasn't made you REP here yet.

I think the driver team consisting of one guy in the garden shed is having too many tea breaks :p

I was more than happy with AMD up until the last official omega driver, ever since then (December), it is almost like they are putting all their money on their pr crap and their 3xx cards and just hoping for the best now.

AMD really need to push their ideas/tech if they want to compete with nvidia and if needs be, be as closed source as gameworks. It is shocking how they still haven't implemented most of the features from radeonpro into ccc as well....

And yup that sums it up pretty well arknor:

My GOTY is out next month (batman) so if AMD perform poorly in that title or/and take forever to get a driver out then I am going to be extremely ****ed.

iirc AMD did fix the memory leak but there was another one that was down to dice/frostbite, I am pretty sure a DICE member tweeted about it.

Saying that, I never experienced the memory leak issue.

I do agree they seem to be working on other areas and that may affect the non arrival of current drivers, Look at all the work on DX12 there doing yes it will be needed but what about things for the current gen of cards and dx11.

To be fair, game developers should be doing that job. They shouldn't just write bad code, blame the DX black box, and then expect the hardware driver team to patch the problems.

Mantle (and now Vulkan and DX12) are an attempt to break a now very old fashioned model and put control back into the hands of the developers so that they can do their job properly. There is nothing wrong with that.

However, there's no doubt that Nvidia spends more money and offers more support to developers and customers. Maybe AMD is just bad at that because they still think they are a CPU company, and graphics cards are the red-headed stepchild (despite the fact GPUs have been keeping the company afloat for the last few years).

AMD need to do more and they need to do better, because regardless of the facts (such as the current AMD driver being fast and stable, and the new Nvidia driver having problems), the perception is that AMD are not stepping up to the plate and doing what is required for their customers, and it's the perception that needs to be changed. Getting good drivers out in a timely fashion is one of the basic things they should do. They managed it for GTA V, but the majority of time, fail to get their act together.

No Witcher 3 drivers out yet? :p

Lucky for me I have the patience and happy to wait and see how it goes with DX12 and 300 series.

It is probable optimising drivers for dx12 and 300 series is what is causing these delays.

Yeah I much rather have stable drivers over buggy ones, I don't mind waiting up to a week or so if it means I will encounter less issues but at the same time with AMD, you don't know how long you will be waiting and by the time they get the driver out, you will have probably completed the game or got bored of it. Yes it is frustrating that they can't seem to get a driver out on release day for one of the biggest games in the last year, however, I can't say that I am surprised since it is a nvidia game.... If they don't have a driver out by the weekend let alone next week then very poor show, regardless of it being a nvidia game or not!

It shouldn't be causing delays though, if they don't have the staff to cover both things then hire more. It's not like they are some tiny business that can only afford 1 employee. I'd be surprised if situations like the current one don't lose them more in future GPU sales than they'd ever spend on extra staff.

We always aim to have the latest Crossfire optimisations for launching titles in our latest Catalyst driver.

Greatest politically correct way of (not) answering the question.

You should tell that to people wanting to use crossfire in Elite: Dangerous. :p

AMD wants to not be known as the cheaper brand, yes? Then where is the premium driver support to boot...

Nothing personal against Matt at all, i'm sure he understands that most people are unhappy with AMD and not him.

If I were matt, I'd be on the phone saying "our community hates that we never tell them anything and my job is pointless if you won't let me tell them what's happening. Give me something to go back to them with! "

All we got was some politically correct rubbish that completely avoided the question. :p

I don't know whats happened to them, as they were great up to the Omegas, but since they got released, they've just gone to absolute pot, its such a shame :(, they've got new cards coming in June, which are now supposedly going to be a higher priced premium brand, which imo, are just going be left on the shelves gathering dust, as with this, everyones just waiting for them and the 980 Ti to come out, so they can all jump to Nvidia, as they'll either grab the Ti, or a 970/980 if their prices fall when these cards hit.

Has anyone just stepped back and looked at all this in another way? Think back over all these games that AMD have had too take more time in releasing a driver.. What do they all have in common?? GameWorks! Its clear that AMD are spending more time trying to work around getting more performance from the driver in these titles..

Some you just need to bloody chill the hell out! I feel the pointing finger at AMD for these drivers isn't only there fault...

And no am not saying AMD is perfect! far from it.. Am getting abit worried over Crossfire FreeSync! I feel this should been sorted along time ago.

My little Rant! Don't agree I don't care! But just step back and look around whats happened in the past months and games that have released.

:mad::p
