The AMD Driver Thread

Quick conclusion before bed :

MUCH better with a single card, even enabled god rays and seems to be fine...

Running with xfire enabled it doesn't use the second card at all

Running with Crysis 3 profile seems to actually run a bit worse than with just xfire disabled with this card..

So seems once they get the xfire profile out they will have it nailed, until then these are nice optimisations in my eyes to keep me until the profiles come out.

Nice one m8 :)

I started getting horrible performance further into the game in different areas in the last day or so. Ended up messing around with every single setting till I found what caused it. This was earlier before the driver became available, might potentially be fixed with the new driver.

Anyhow shadow distance to medium from high made a ridiculous difference. In certain areas I would stand still and get 72fps but turning to a certain direction gave drops into the 20s, occasionally into the teens, it was woeful.

With everything low but shadow distance high I would still get those dips into the 20s, with almost everything ultra/high and god rays on but low quality the drops only went down to maybe 60fps. Shadow distance appears to absolutely destroy performance in certain areas.

That one setting changed the entire feel of the game. Weird as earlier in the game I was getting 72fps most places, as I got further into the city though it went to crap.

By the time AMD released optimised drivers, I already finished Fallout 4 so no reason for me to grab these. Will wait for the Crimson drivers myself.

I do not understand why AMD does not work with developers to have optimised drivers released on release day or before. They do not need to do it with every title. Just pick like 5-10 of the biggest titles per year and make it happen!

If Deus Ex Mankind Divided which is an AMD sponsored game does not have everything running perfectly from day one, I will be very disappointed with AMD.

After Deus Ex Mankind Divided I won't have any games that year that I will want to play from day 1, so I am not bothered. Usually I wait until the game is half price and by then it is optimised as it is going to get anyway. lol.

You DO realise that your case is extreme case, since other 99% of Fallout 4 fans either haven't scratched the surface of the game or are at most half way through the game. If you manage to run through the game in few hours without enjoying it, do not blame AMD for not releasing game ready drivers day one.
Besides, what part of Fallout 4 will use gameworks you didn't understand? It is safe to assume that nvidia was again at their best with their proprietary code.
I for one am kinda surprised they sorted performance out so quickly and by the looks of it the boost is quite good.
So instead of blitzing through the games left and right, enjoy them for what they are (especially fallout series)

Note: I do not have Fallout 4 yet, myself and don't plan to get it until it hits some discounts and sales :P

No way you can finish the game in less than a week, unless you don't do anything except the main story. I haven't even gone to Diamond City yet since the many side quests are keeping me busy. The game will have 100's of hours of gameplay so playing through it quickly is not doing it justice.

The AMD performance was good for this game without the latest driver. It's only crossfire support which is lacking but that is true for SLI too. At the moment shadows is the main killer of performance but that is easily rectified by lowering shadows to high or medium. I haven't tested the latest driver yet but early reports say it's improved performance.

have you tried latest driver? does it still have issues with shadows?

Thanks for this Drunken, I changed shadow distance and tested and it made a absolutely massive difference.

The new drivers made things slightly smoother. I did a certain run and stopped in a place where my FPS tanked with the old drivers and new drivers. I noticed less variation slightly in FPS and 3-5 more FPS in my stop place where FPS would tank on the new drivers. I saved my spot here and tried what you said, changed shadow distance to medium and behold to my amazement. Gone from 40-42 FPS in my stop place to 60FPS.

This is something i think needs to be outlined for people to try!
Might take a screenshot to see the visual difference from Medium to Ultra shadow distance. Can't understand why it would have such a huge impact in certain areas.

Old engine, ancient even.

Yea true, but i would have imagined that it would be quite easy to run this, without it being too taxing on the system. Surprised me tbh the dips i was seeing.

I checked the visual difference with shadow distance from ultra to medium and for the most part i couldn't tell by generally just looking. I had to actually look at the screenshots to tell the differences which were only in the distance not right in front of me. Obviously it's in the name of the setting.. "Shadow Distance"

Medium is just fine and has virtually no change to the detail of the game, unless your actively looking really hard which means your no longer playing the game your playing spot the difference.

Apart from having the godrays which can be disabled, I did not see gameworks plastered all over the game. If only all gameworks games were like this, I would not have an issue with gameworks.

How do you know I did not enjoy the game? I did not even start the main story quests until I was past level 30 and had discovered 200+ locations. I stopped playing when I was level 44 and at which point I discovered 275 locations.

You DO realise that people would rather not have to wait a week after a game is released to get drivers that are optimised right? No idea why you got all worked up and defensive about my comment, those are MY expectations. Do NOT blame me if YOUR expectations are lower ;)

I pretty much did most of what I want to do in 50 or so hours. That was bulk of the fun I would say. What is left at this point is building up sanctuary or other towns and making a trade routes which I am not all that fussed about, will get around to it some day maybe.

Then there is random quests here or there which I will come back to later when crossfire is working and Bethesda fix a big bug that prevents me from completing a quest and having access to about 5-10 locations.

I can see myself spending more time just further exploring and enjoying the game, but as I said, the bulk of the fun has been had. No way will I be spending hundreds of hours in it for example, doubt majority will. I would say 100 hours tops for me, until the game of the year edition is released with all expansions that is :D

Point is the new drivers improved performance which I could have used as crossfire is not working.

Lets see how it goes with Deus Ex Mankind Divided, there will be no excuses then :p

Well with turning the FPS cap off (iPresentInterval) by turning the iPresentInterval=1 to a 0, it allowed my FPS to run free, however i did cap my FPS in RTSS as it felt much smoother doing it this way and running 1440p it kept trying to cap my FPS to 50 which was annoying so it had to be disabled.

Turning god rays off completely and doing what drunkenmaster suggested turning shadow distance to medium. I have every other setting maxed out i can run this game now in 1440p on a constant 60FPS with the new drivers. This game is now running smooth for me :)

@TNA in ideal world people shouldn't have to deal with nvidia shenanigans. Yet we don't live in that world.

I agree. I do not like some of the things they do. But somehow I doubt that the reason AMD took a week to release Fallout 4 ready optimisations had anything to do with Nvidia. I do not blame them too much regarding the crossfire drivers being ready, as even nvidia did not have them so there is likely some other issue there, but would have been nice to have had these drivers that come out last week when I was playing :)

Anyway, won't have to deal with dual gpu for too long, I will be getting a single 14/16nm gpu as soon as they come out. Then likely after go for the full fat versions which will likely come out in a years time.

I am playing StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void at the moment, guess what? Crossfire does not work properly on it either even though there is a profile from what I can see. lol :p

Currently Fallout 4 works to a degree with the Crysis 3 profile so AMD could easily have modified that profile and release as preliminary crossfire support.

I've seen a really bad crossfire profile released for Blacks Op3 yet they didn't bother releasing a working Fallout 4 profile. Too slack
