The AMD Driver Thread

This might help fellow AMD users with Rise of the Tomb Raider:
I've just been testing this game with my R9 390X and I noticed something very unusual. Reducing Anisotropic filtering from 16x to 2x gave me 10-15 FPS extra in both the snow level and Syria, no other setting gives me anywhere near the same increase. Can anyone else confirm?

what else settings are you running? I've running 4x on my 290

1920x1200
Fullscreen
Exclusive Fullscreen
Refresh Rate:60HZ
Vsync:triple buffered
Antialiasing:FXAA
Anisotropic filtering: 2x
Everything else at maximum except motion blur off

I get mostly 50-60FPS with these settings in the opening areas of the game, just got to first camp. However, will drop into 40s sometimes.

This is with 5820K and Sapphire tri-x 390x both at stock on windows 10 64 bit.

I've got it running okay but there are still times when I get extended period of heavy stutter. And I've done a lot of settings reductions but that doesn't stop it.

How poorly the Fury does compared to the Grenada cards makes me think of when we was told how each game would need it's own specific optimizations on the HBM cards which in turn makes me realise just how dependent we are on AMD coming up with the goods and if this is an example of that it's not great news.

Fiji just isn't that much faster than Hawaii/Grenada. Kapp (who owns both) has reported this issue in a few games also.

I mean sure it's faster, but in some games it's only 10% faster etc. Nothing specific to this game.

I reported something similar when I first got my Fury and did a series of benches on both the Sapphire Fury tri-x and the 290x it was replacing, I put my bench results in the Fury owners thread (In those tests I found some older games such as Far cry 2 actually performed worse on the Fury), However at this moment in time I'm considering a comment made by AMD's bald fella (sorry I forgot his name) ages ago regarding how certain games would need to be individually optimised for the HBM cards (a comment I've mentioned as a concern several times in the past) and looking at the fact that we aren't doing well in this title and how the stutter is reduced by lowering memory usage more than we should need too it's quite possible that's why and once we get the ROTTR ready drivers things will change.
I'm simply saying that I think that having that additional reliance on AMD's driver team isn't a good thing and this could very well be an example of that

Yeah it could well be.

TBH the whole 4GB deal was the reason I didn't get a Fury. I just can't see it lasting that long. Also can't see AMD spending much time working on specific fury fixes for each game once Polaris has been out for a while.

7 months ago I still had my 7950 and was in dire need of an upgrade, and decided to get the 390X for £325 on a special here at ocuk. Quite pleased with my purchase performance wise (1440P, 144Hz Freesync).

I'm confused about the frame time spikes on the Fury X and R9 Nano from AMD and hopefully the company is working on a fix for it. I asked AMD for a newer driver than the 16.1 hotfix release on their website but was told it would be at least Monday before one would be available for media.

For Media? So even longer for us?

It's in the PC Per interview by the way.

I'll finish the game this weekend so I'm screwed.

Lol, whats the rush, is it a race? Just play it next weekend instead.

It's not a case of what's the rush, we haven't all got oodles of free time, who say's I've got the time to simply play it next week? I earmarked this weekend to play it based on when the game released and have had it earmarked for today for ages, I made sure to have the game installed ready for release and once again have been let down by my graphics cards support. there's no lol to it, It's simply something that shouldn't be happening.

But you're quite right I'm not playing it this weekend now because it's too juddery, The problem is it now means that I'll end up playing it in bits and pieces rather than in the way I choose to experience campaigns, like a story, like you would a movie all be it a long one.

Plus the Division Beta is for this weekend only... What did amd users get for it....nothing. What did Nvidia users get..."Tom Clancy's The Division - profile added".
