The AMD Driver Thread

@AMD_Vik So I have a fix for all the issues with flickering etc with AMD in Second Life, and its a good one too :)

I have a long time friend in Second Life who has developed his own SL Viewer over the years, since around 2007. A very talented coder!

So Second Life has always ran on OpenGL since it was born around 2003 and Linden Labs just keep prolonging the pain with plasters and stuff instead of actually moving to a different API.

This is where my friend will hopefully make a difference to the way Linden Lab have been doing things for over 20 years.

The viewer in question is called Kirsten's Viewer and has been registered as a third party viewer developer for years and he has started working on a DirectX 11 version of the viewer, it is currently in pre-alpha.

I have been testing this and all the flickering woes are gone, I just dont see them anymore. Yes there are some alpha issues and other things to be ironed out but this particular flickering issue is completely gone now.

Here is the best part of all this, by dropping a couple of dll files into the installed viewer folder it will also run using the Vulkan API :D

Vulkan actually runs smoother but the fps is lower than DX11 but its still good fps anyway.

With both DX11 and Vulkan I can log in, see everything as I could see if using OpenGL, I guess with the odd little glitch that will be fixed down the road. I can use voice and do everything else in-world as I would normally do and the viewer is pretty solid (like 3 hours in a heavy scene of over 90 avatars in a club), only crashed on me once and that was probably because I was zooming around too much trying to take pictures in a crowded club :p

Basically, OpenGL is a broken pile of garbage at this point and I cant understand why they have not made the change but for now I will be using Kirsten's Viewer running the Vulkan API from now on, its runs better than the OpenGL version anyway, higher fps, renders much faster, next to no texture thrashing, uses a RamCache, better lighting etc.

I cant give Kirsten enough props for what he is doing right now, its a love of his for years and right now this looks like a game changer for Second Life and I just hope that Linden Labs take this, use this and change API asap.. it will make all Second Life users have a much better experience, especially those on lower end systems and with what can be done in DX and Vulkan that isnt possible with OpenGL will also make SL look much better too!

All aboard!
I'm glad to hear that viewer essentially sidesteps the issue but we do have a SC fix for this, it's just that it's tied to an upcoming major release, and I think it might be delayed for further validation (whcih imo is much needed)

They have been talking about Vulkan for a while now with 'part Vulkan' test viewers but never make the next step, I think Kirsten's Viewer might help them to move a little faster. I dont know why AMD are taking so long to fix this, does not happen with Nvidia.. but it needs sorting fast as its just more people moving to Nvidia if these things keep happening.

I'm happy with this Vulkan API viewer for now, it works and works well and were only on pre alpha 02.

Lets hope AMD can fix it soon.. Cheers Vik.

AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.9.1 Optional Driver Release Notes

Article Number: RN-RAD-WIN-26-9-1

Last Updated: September 3rd, 2026.
Highlights

New Game Support
Onimusha: Way of the Sword
The Blood of Dawnwalker
Fixed Issues
Intermittent game crash may be observed while playing Starfield and Apex Legends™ on Radeon™ RX 9000 series graphics products.

Known Issues

Failure to install may be observed while installing AI Bundle components in some regions with limited access to HuggingFace and GitHub.
AMD Smart Access Memory may become disabled after driver installation on Windows® 10 systems.
Anti-Lag 2 may show as inactive in AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition after disabling Frame Generation in Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy.
Cyberpunk 2077 recommends a minimum of 6GB of video memory. AMD Radeon™ RX 9050 4GB users experiencing issues are recommended to set graphics intensive features to low or off.

I’ll try the new one tomorrow, I only just installed the last one but just scrolling on Amazon reset the driver about 3 times in 5 minutes.

He has a point..... i don't think that AMD should follow everything Nvidia do, i think the jury is still out on DLSS 5.

But what about the basic's? Like a per-game REBAR toggle?

FSR 4 for Vulkan?

No Man's Sky is not the only game running on Vulkan, Star Citizen has the same problem, Squadron 42 will too, the irony is if i'm on Linux i could get FSR4 working with Star Citizen, its a bit of a workaround, you have to use the right Proton version and Optiscaler but you can do it, if a modders can get it working on Linux why don't AMD just do it natively for both Windows and Linux?

It does feel like if you chose AMD you don't really matter, the software support is minimal effort.

Building a new rig featuring the 9070XT tomorrow, are the latest drivers good to use? or is there one that has less "issues" Been away from AMD for a while!

Thanks in advance :)

I've not had a driver related issue for a long time, and the last time was due to Windows Update deciding to roll back the driver for some reason, which is a well known issue. I just let Adrenalin auto update when it wants to and don't worry about it tbh.

26.7.1 running great for me with no driver timeouts on a 9070, I read somewhere that 26.8.1 had some issues and there is the 26.9.1 (WHQL Optional) that may have fixed things but I just stuck to July's driver as it aint broke for me.

Guess it depends what games you're playing.

beginning to wish I'd paid extra for a 5070Ti when I bought my 9070xt

Witcher 3 compatible drivers not yet out - but seem to have been given to press etc to do benchmarks on the new update to the game - just tried it and was unplayable

Virtual Super Resolution still doesn't work for me - still locked to be monitor dependent which considering should be a virtual resolution and un-related to output signal makes sense (works with monitors I've tested but not with my main TV which is so annoying)

Running nicely on a 9070XT, Everything maxed out, Path tracing and Nvidia Hairworks turned off, RT options set to Performance and FSR4 set to performance and FG on, This is at a res of 5120x2160 and very playable, Very smooth with no hitching, FPS counter top middle.

Would've been nice if AMD could've nudged CDPR to put AMD's Ray Regeneration in.

They need ray regen in this and cyberpunk.

Yeah I don't understand why this tech isn't pushed, We got in Black Ops 7 which didn't need it and Crimson Desert which isn't exactly a pixel peeper of a game, Really weird game decisions.

Avatar Frontiers of Pandora is an AMD sponsored game, Zero sign of Ray Regeneration.

I'm hoping it's not yet another case of AMD doing an AMD and shooting themselves in both feet, Which sadly they are very well known for, They have good tech, Get it out there, Throw money at studios if they have to but get the tech into a hell of a lot more games, It's what Nvidia does and it works.

Thanks for this info. Very useful for a monitor I have on order.

This is the first driver since near the beginning of the year that installed on my 9700XT no problems straight over the old one, using the standalone installer. No clean install necessary, and it correctly reset the driver during install. It did however still manage to kill the Fancontrol process again, even when running as a service.
