*** The AMD RDNA 4 Rumour Mill ***

This is a pretty good explanation and gives you enough of what you need to know.

All processors CPU or GPU use caches. The amount at each level impacts the performance of that processor. The more cache you have, the less likely you will have to access slower RAM (or slower VRAM in the case of GPUs).
From what i have gathered is the draw back to this method is it takes up a good bit of die space but saves on a larger bus and costly memory. So you take a hit on space but can be cheaper on memory at the expensive of having less space for shaders/gpu power at a given die size.

Correct. Nvidia have more cache located on the actual chip (L1/L2). AMD in RDNA3 have more cache, but in the MCDs (L3) and not the GCDs where the shaders themselves are. This way AMD do end up with more cache overall but not by as much when comparing RDNA3 with Ada.

I'm all ready for FF7 Rebirth too - If 12GB is restrictive, I'll be very sad at 10GB!

You will be fine. At worst a bit of tweaking settings, job done ;)

Alternatively spend the £750 you saved by doing the right thing 4 years ago by not going 3090 and get a 5070Ti with it.

You can then smash the 3080 with a hammer or something :p

Took a bit to rad through that but looks quite impressive with some results even beating the 7900XTX in some titles.

The 9070 XT and 9070 are performing better than I expected according to those AMD benchmark leaks. Though I tend to knock 10% off “official” numbers.

Just about meeting AMDs “RTX 4080 claims”. So while in the face of it $599 is not terrible, especially if they do get close to 5070Ti performance for $150 less. It should still be remembered these are the 7800 XT and 7700 XT replacements and should be at least $50 - $100 cheaper.

It may sound like 10% more cost is hardly a big deal, but it turns a 30% price performance increase into a 20% increase. So suddenly the uplift from a 7800 XT is not that great. Or the comparison to Nvidia is not good.

I predict at $499 people will simply wait for a 5070 to come in to stock. If I were faced with a 9070 at $499 vs a 5070 for $550 and both gave similar performance. I would hold my nose, hope 12GB will be enough at 1440p and get the 5070. The 9070 would need to soundly beat a 5070 on price/perf for most people to consider one. That’s just the reality AMD refuse to accept.

The comparison to a 5070Ti is far more promising but AMD giving 20% lower cost but most likely worse RT has not worked for them in the past. It won’t work now either.

This has honestly got to the best/weirdest pre-launch marketing that AMD have done in years.

Step 1: Tell everyone you're announcing new GPUs
Step 2: Don't announce GPUs
Step 3: Stay completely silent and don't say or acknowledge anything
Step 4: Profit?
