The anime thread sequel (it's still not as good as the Manga though),

I've not watched it yet myself, but I can see it as a type of movie that is good but can only be watched once only.
Kinda like what I have with the reboot Planet of the ape series.
The best description of it I can remember was something like: "It's the best movie you'll never want to watch again".

I've actually bought it something like 3 times now, but only ever watched it on my original US NTSC DVD.

I received the Alltheanime mystery boxes for 2023 today. A very nice mix, especially as I'd not got 3 of them and 4 of the ones in it were ones I missed the original pre-order offers on.

Red box
Love me, Love me not
Emma, A Victorian romance S1 (that was pre-ordered the minute it went up)
Sereph of the end complete (I've got the previous half series releases).
In/Spectre
The relative worlds

Green Box
The Irresponsible Captain Tylor TV (picked up on pre-order offer)
Hello World
The Heroic Legend of Arslan
Summer Ghost
The Deer King: Collectors edition blu-ray

I really need to try and clear my anime backlog, i've barely watched any of my anime BD's this year as i've not had enough uninterrupted time when i've been able to concentrate (I've had Belle in the player for a month waiting for a chance).

I watched, and enjoyed the first season when I got be BD's but i've not kept up to date because i've had too much other stuff.
If and when the rest get released here i'll probably watch it on disc, but at the moment i've got a backlog of disks that runs into hundreds of hours and i'm managing about an episode a night :./

That is a definite no brainer!

Ordering now! (and the usual discount for anime unlimited subs also works, so that's nearly a third off the early bird price combined!!)

I love the series and the films, now if only they'll do the TV and OVA's as well, although MVM tried that and IIRC only got the original OVA's out :(

That is one of the classics. I remember watching that with my brother in law (before he married my sister) on VHS in about 95.

IIRC there are at least two versions of it out in the uk at the moment, the original ATA release, and the remastered version which was done using materials that were IIRC discovered about a week after the ATA release :/
That one looks to be the remastered version, the older one was only released as the collectors edition with a cd.

And yes, I've got both the new and old collectors editions :p

TBH i'm really out of it on new anime with the exception of a handful of fun/interesting shows* (Frieren beyond journey's end has been very good).

I've seen something about one by a guy that's done a lot of work on mecha stuff going back 30 years (IIRC he's done work on stuff from Bugglegum Crisis and Gundam to FMP), Bang Brave, Bang Bravern that looks like it could be fun, but it's felt like there has been a bit of a drought of mecha stuff the last few years, I've heard that Gundam Witch from Mercury is good if you're into Gundam (but also seen people complain about it).

On the plus side, there is a host of older good mecha stuff that you might have missed, I can't remember how long you've been into it but if you can find them to watch Gasaraki and Rahxephon are both good, as is Code Gees, Eureka 7, Knights of Sidonia, classic Patlabor TV/OVA although the animation is a little janky but it's got some great characters and a very different take on mecha to most stuff, same with Dai Guard (salarymen saving the world!).

As an aside, ATA are due to release Macross Plus this year which is really good, and Animeigo are currently doing a kickstarter for Macross II which looks like they've hit a high enough level for them to include the dub, but more importantly a UHD version! (they're about $10k from hitting the point where they include it free as opposed to a $10 extra), which I think would make it the first Macross in 4k.
I'm really hoping we're going to get a lot more of the Macross stuff in the next couple of years, as there is a load of it I've either never seen, or only seen on terrible RM format and the like (I remember watching Macross 7 in terrible quality, and even worse subs).

*To give you an idea of how little anime i've watched this last year, I think i've managed about 15 minutes a day on average (and i've just realised I still haven't watched Belle or the Violette Evergarden film)..

I had a scroll through Crunchy Roll content the other day and good grief - it’s not hard to see why anime gets such a bad rap. It was so sexualised it felt like I was scrolling through a porn website tbh :o
lol

There is a lot of that stuff and it does seem to get prominence on CR (I think because it's some of the more popular, especially with the teens), and the promo shots always seem to involve certain bits even if they're a small part of the show (Marketing knows what sells).

It's always tended to be that the stuff aimed at teen boys tends to get prominence, whilst a lot of other stuff is harder to see, especially the older stuff.

@Werewolf if you haven't watched much macross would recommend.

Macross Zero
Macross Plus
Macross Frontier

They are independent spin off from the main arc. So no prior knowledge required.
Cheers!

Oddly Macross Plus was the first I watched, the old Manga UK double DVD set was one of my early buys:)

Zero and Frontier have been on my list for something like 10+ years now, just never managed to get round to them.
I'm going to try and clear some of my backlog this year, honest!

I listed it in the list of mecha, but I watch it when it aired on Sci-fi Channel back in the late 90's to early 00's when channel 4 (4 late) and sci-fi channel aired anime after midnight. wouldn't mind if anime limited decided to pick it up as I don't think it ever got a uk release
IIRC it got released by MVM in about 2001-3, they had a bunch of their licences running on a loop on one of the UK satellite channels that popped up for a while (CNX?)

And once again I realise I'm getting old:p

Ok, i'd heard of that but not seen anything specific.

That looks like it could be good, and reminds me of a lot of classics, you've got the obvious Gundam, Gurren Lagaan, some Mazinger, along side Patlabor and Gasaraki.

I'm quite looking forward to new spice and wolf:)

I really need to get back to reading the books, I lost track of where I got to (I know I finished the original run, and I've read some of the new parchment ones).

Talking about older characters/properties, I was sorting my music folder out earlier and listening to stuff on random play and it started the Mahoro Mambo, that takes me back and makes me want to dig the discs out:) (I'm sort of surprised it's never got a blu-ray release, at least in the west).

I'm not sure if it's been mentioned in here, but ATA have announced they've got Macross Plus and will be doing a UE for it (that they'd got it was announced a while back), Macros Delta, Gunbuster 2, Project AKO and Akiba Maid War.
That's going to be reasonably expensive, as 4 out of 5 of those are on my "want to get" list.

It sounds like M+ might be going up for order on Thursday.

So who is going to be pre-ordering the Macross plus collectors edition? I am very tempted, if it was DYRL or the original(Not stupid Robotech) then I would pre-order in a heartbeat.
I am still salty over the fact Tatsunoko/Studio Nue are happy to allow Harmony gold to keep the rights to the original.
I've just hit the pre-order.

£120 at the early bird price, £150 RRP.
With the ATA membership it knocked another £12 off it.

It's a bit expensive for an OVA and film but it's one I've wanted on Blu-ray for a long time and their UE's are usually very good (I've got most of them:eek: ).
If you wait there is a good chance that in about 3-6 months they'll announce the standard version.
