The army... how is it?

I spent the first 6 years in the Artillery firing both the L118 (my baby) and the AS90, I then transferred to the RMP, i loved both jobs and don’t regret the move at all, i have travelled all over the world been to Iraq, NI, Bosnia, Kosovo and will deploy to afghan next year hopefully.
The pension is awesome yes, but after 24 years that’s it, thanks for your time and your forgotten about, and placed back in the normal job market.
Don’t be pushed into anything at the careers office they will have quotas to fill for different parts of the army, make your choice and stick to it.

Speaking as an army brat rather than an actual soldier just be aware that it is not an easy life to bring up a family. The divorce rate in the services is pretty high. Probably a great life for a single bloke however. Though I personally tend to avoid careers that hold a higher than average chance of being shot at.. :)

Can't imagine you being in the forces, why do you want to join?

You will find that actually the divorce rate is not to bad, i was also a Pads Brat, and in my 10 years of serving only know of 2 marriages that didn’t work.

It is allegedly about double the average, that was some research done in 2000, so unless it has fallen dramatically since then I would still say it is high. Not really suprising considering some of the unique pressures it puts on families.

you might die

and you get shouted at by big scary men.

and you might die

and you get shot at, by pretty much everyone

and you might die

and you get lots of stupid hippies disrespecting you for doing what you do, despite that fact that you might die, for their benefit.

did I mention that you might die?
