**The ASrock 939dual-SATA2 (ULi M1695) thread**

Thermaltake sell a K8 backplate intended for use in Gigabyte boards that ship with a non-standard plastic backplate.

O think that it will work in any S939 board, including this one, but I have not tried it myself. I was fortunate enough to be given a standard K8 backplate that had been taken off a faulty board.

None of it.

The manual says that you should put the screws into the retention moule, and they will screw into the backplate. I'm using the alternative method, as Asrock is ASUS. When you torn the board over, the screws are poking out, but nothing to screw them into...

am I missing something... can't see the wood for the trees? Has anyone managed to get the Sonic Tower and this board to play nice?

The Asrock does not come with a s939 backplate, most other s939 motherboards eg. Asus A8n do.

Did the Sonic Tower come with a H shaped foam piece (same shape as the metal H plate in the pic above) ?

Yes this will work with any s939 board BUT.....

Have you tried getting hold of this K8 backplate in the UK.... Ive searched and not found anyone in UK selling it.

Do you have a link to someone selling it?

Only Thermaltake themselves. I have no idea if they can send the backplates from within the UK, but it's worth asking them.

Well, Guess I have a cooler that will be going in the MM soon.

I am most unhappy... nowhere have I seen that you have to buy another part to get this cooler to fit...

Will go to Craplins to get a cheapie clip cooler tomorrow...

So, now that that one is out of the window, what is a really good heatsink that *will* fit this board? Will be overclocking, the X2-4200 I have is know to do 2.7 (Both cores) on chilled air, so looking for 2.5 to 2.6 really.

Any suggestions?

Cheers guys

Don't be toooo hasty there might still be a way of using this one if it comes with the foam piece.

That is not the case with Socket939. S939 boards should come with a standard K8 backplate. I'm assuming that S754 boards should too.

Very few coolers come with a backplate for S939. The picture of cooler and accessories that you provided shows this - it has a backplate for S478 and a backplate for S775, but not one for S939.

EDIT: Not sure about 478, but there definitely isn't a K8 backplate there for S939 boards. They are definitely supposed to ship with the motherboard.

xp-90 has a backplate.

The spec for S939 states that the backing plate comes with the motherboard, unfortunately Asrock chose to ignore this. Get the Freezer 64 Pro from OcUK, it's on special at the moment and will happily clip to the Asrock retention module.

I also have a Sonic Tower that is now unused, I was hoping to use it with my A64 but bought the Asrock board. Only gripe I have with it really.

I'd love to use it mate... planned on strapping 2 120mm 190CFM delta's to it... (I work with headphones on:D )

No Foam came with it. If I can bodge it, and it *secure* then lemme know. Would mousemat do as foam? And what plate do I strap it to, as none of the included ones seem to fit. Might just cable-tie the I-beam thingmy on, see how that does.

just bought the board and need your help!!

Hi everyone,

1st of all thankyou all for a great forum!

I have taken the plunge into 64 bit technology and bought the Asrock 939 dual-sata2 as the basis for my new computer. I have a few queries and parts which I was going to buy.. but want your views 1st.

I have flogged my X-box PS2 etc so am wanting this unit to be a gaming unit as well as completing the usual MS Office applications. I need a system which will be both stable but can play the latest games and will be able to do so for a while to come. I have a rough budget in mind for the following parts (around £400 mark).

1) I am considering buying the PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT 256MB GDDR3 TV-Out/DVI (PCI-Express) - Retail (GX-037-PC). I have been on the asrock website and it does not state the x850 xt in its compatible graphics card list. Is is?

The price on OCUK is seems very cheap compared to other x850 xt boards (such as Foxconn X850XT Platinum Edition 256M PCI-Express which is over 200 pounds). This leads me to the question.. why is it so much less than other boards with the same chipsets?

2) 512MB Buffalo Value Line PC3200 (DDR 400) [CL2.5] Non ECC Dimm Memory. Ok, it is cheap but has had a good write up in some of the computer press for no frills ram. I was told at a computer fair today that this board prefers only 2 slots for ram being filled rather than the full 4 as it can leave the board being unstable. Is this true? If so then am I better off spending more on ram and getting 2 x 1g ram instead?

3) Cpu: athlon 64 (939) 3000 venice. I suppose everyone can get OEM CPU's cheaper but are the worth it? Is the stock fan ample for my own needs?

4) PSU:Enermax Noisetaker 485W EG495AX-VE(G) SFMA ATX2.0 PSU.

5) I have a Western Systems IDE 80g HD. Should I replace this or is it worthwhile keeping (extra funds permitting)

I also want the system to be quiet as my current system is really noisy.

Hope I am not asking too much with the above and am a novice to this so any feedback at all would be really appreciated.

Thanks! :)

By the way.. not sure if I should have posted this as a new thread. Sorry if I should have

thanks

Can't say as I have ever had any dealings with that RAM you mentioned but if you are building a new rig for gaming you really want 2gb of memory these days.

Heck, even just running windows is better on 1gb of RAM rather than 512 meg.

I want 2 gb of ram. sorry for not making that clear in my post! ;)

picked it up from compute upgrade mag. I was looking to fill all slots with 512 thus get 2mg. (buffalo ram 512 x4 going for 110.34 inc vat and del)... but think now will go for two sticks of 512. Read that OcUK Value 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 184pin DDR Memory Dual Channel Kit (MY-006-OK) at similar price would do the job.

thanks for your response.

.. and any thoughts on the bits and pieces above?

But if it's a new build wouldn't you have been better off with a pci-express board from Epox or DFI?

Oh, well

1. Card seems good for the price.
2. 2 x 1gb of ram works better in A64 boards, rather than 4 x 512mb. Try the GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC3200 Value Dual Channel Kit or Corsair 2GB DDR Value Select PC3200 CAS3.0 Kit - reduced this week...
3. Opteron 144 or 146 usually overclock more successfully - 144 is £117.44 Including VAT from OcUK... with retail hs - would probably do for now...
4. Enermax psu's have been reported as failing drastically recently - check other posts. Antec are good and many like the 580w Hiper.
5. Hard drives are inexpensive - 160gb for about £60 + del this week only here

By the way the Zalman heatsinks are good if you want a silent pc, both the 7000 and 7700 series work on this board and are also reduced this week.

After re-reading all this, it looks like you might want to use 'this week only' for a lot of your purchases... :D

thanks for your reply polomint.

I went for the Asrock 939 dual-sata2 due to price (seem to be around the £40-50 mark) and also not being sure if I was going to get a PCI-E card or go for a cheaper AGP card and upgrade to a more expensive card later. I am still considering this option. (N.B. doing the build on the sly from my fiance who unfortunately works for the bank I bank with.. so have to justify my spending! big brother and all that!!). Point aside.. due to PCI-E coming in has this led to £ drop in AGP cards? If so.. is there a good AGP card that can deliver similar to the PowerColor ATI Radeon X850 XT but at a lower price? just a thought.

I have been rooting around on-line and states that Operon is more for Servers and/or computers that are going to need 8gb ram whilst Athlon 64 more for desktops/gaming and can take up to 4gb ram. Are these the major difference btw the two as they are both similarily priced?

The last time I even looked at a rebuild was 3 years ago so any input is very much appreciated.

thanks again for a great forum

about 1.55-1.58V is the max you can get mine is solid at 1.56V wich is not enough to get my opteron 144 stable at 2900 - 3000 can boot into windows but not much else ,but happy at 2800Mhz for now
