The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

Take it the performance between the two is similar then? But you reckon I should switch it out?

there are loads of reviews out there for you to make an informed decision on.

980's are more powerful and do produce better results however you need to put a value on that and decide if you require the extra 20+ fps or so. reading reviews and comparing benchmarks are the only way forward.

No I do appreciate that. I had been looking at benchmarks and obviously depending on the program, there was either a slither of difference or a large margin as per usual. Which doesn't make it unanimously worth it or not. However, running 3x 270's I don't have liquid cooling for the cards and putting them back to back, i'm not sure how that would behave.

Don't take this the wrong way, but those settings must look so bad it's unbelievable. You will have such blown highlights, dark crush and loss of detail going on, the mind boggles.

No ones runs a monitor at 100% brightness either (unless you mean specifically for using ULMB mode only?)
Look at all the reviews and calibration reports. Most set the brightness to between 20 and 30 to get the right/ best settings.

If you're starting from nowt, 2 x 970s seems to be the smart buy now.

If you've got a rog swift, you need to get nvidia dude. I've just got one yesterday.

As you seem to be more clued up then me (admittedly I'm noobtastic when it comes to monitors and setting them up) care to share what settings you use for me to try? I have backed off monitor brightness to 40 and moved some other settings about, not as much glare from the screen but colors do seem deeper.

Try:

Brightness 24
Contrast 50

Colour - R95 G95 B95

ULMB should default to 100brightness, and i use pulse of 30-50 depending on map for BF4, that one map where you're in the tunnels is too dark to have the pulse low.

As for NVP settings, no idea. I think mine are default.

So I'm suddenly getting black screen with 'out of range' coming up when trying to fire up games and can only use windowed mode. I have not changed anything. Was working fine this morning. No driver update. Anyone else getting this?

This was a known bug in the drivers that I'm hoping was fixed with the latest driver update. If it does happen again then unplug the displayport and plug it back in and all will be good again.

Despite only ordering at around 15:50 yesterday I've just got confirmation that it's being delivered today! Rather epic service from Overclockers to get it to the courier in time (I think the cut off is 16:00) and assuming it does arrive equally epic from DPD for delivering on a sunday!

Did a quick check and my MSI Z97 Gaming 5 supports only 2 way SLI. So it looks like it's 2x 980's for me unless there's a way round it?

Your decision and the 980s are sweet. I was taking into consideration that the 970s were close to the 980s and looking to save you a few quid.

I swapped my order to ocuk due to a delay from other company, same thing.... If it does turn up today then that's pretty damn impressive

No worries Gregster, I understand. I'll be honest I was really considering getting 3x 970's last night. Was checking how to set up Sli's and saw that not all motherboards support 3-way sli. Checked my board and it only supports 2-way sli but 3-way crossfire . However it's still tempting to go 2x 970's because they are quite close and cheap, so still haven't made a rock solid choice yet ;).

Sounds good. Seems that Sli 970's are trading blows with my 295x2 depending on what game and i'd save 100 odd quid. However 2x 980's is a clear upgrade, but it would cost me about 150-200 quid.

Calibrated my screen and found the default setup is already spot on. Using Brightness 35 or whatever the lighting dictates, Contrast 50 and the RGB colour balance was already almost perfect but changed it to perfection with 100, 100, 99. The greyscale is excellent and the colours are also fully saturated and pretty much on hue at all saturations apart from green which is very slightly off hue near 75 and 100 % saturation but you see no issue in real life it's not worth worrying about. Gamma is the only thing that is not perfect and it also changes with different hz settings. My opinions are on 144hz though as that is what i will be using. Using 144hz the screen is not washed out and gamma hovers at 2.2 ish from 30% - 80% grey. It is a bit brighter at 20% and more so at 10% where it has dipped to 2.0 gamma. In general it just means that shadow detail is easier to see but it would have been better if it was slightly darker.

Head on viewing the middle of the screen from 2ft back and it's just awesome. No reflections, slightly grainy coating but not an issue and deep black levels.

My screen thankfully has not clouding or dead pixels and looks perfect. Viewing angles head on are excellent and games look great.

Using triple SLI and g-sync at 144hz games run very smooth with minimal blur and as expected no tearing or judder (unless the game hitches or loads etc. Watch dogs can still have stutter for instance, nothing g-sync can do about that). On a single GPU with frames rates at mid 30's - low 40's you find you have no idea what fps you are getting as it looks smooth but as expected lower frame rates bring more input lag, more motion blur and the lower they become you see more double imaging which is just how it is with low frame rates on a display with good response times (not a fault of the monitor at all).
The only motion issue is that even at frame rates in the high triple digits you get some reverse overshoot on bright areas but it is no deal breaker and does not happen all the time.
Not fully sold on ULMB as high hz and frame rates have minimal blur anyway and g-sync adapts to your fps fluctuations nicely. Will have a mess around some time in the future with that setting.

I set up my Sammy 4k next to the ROG and ran the same games on both monitors using 2 PC's and at 2ft back with the 4k having no AA and the ROG using either 4xMSAA or in game SMAA if it is of good quality and the image is a fairly close match unless you look much closer to pick up extra detail on the 4k. The 4k still has nicer jaggies and detail but at 2 ft the difference is a lot less and I may consider using the ROG full time. I await the Acer 4k g-sync to compare. Even so the triple digit fps with that smooth low lag feel with minimal motion blur is swaying me for sure over 60hz 4k even with g-sync as it will blur more and feel less smooth with not vast amounts of image difference sat back with the right choice of AA at 1440p.

Everything about the ROG from slim bezel with sharp non reflective screen, great build and stand I am really happy with the purchase. I can not go back to a non g-sync screen at all now.
