The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

Think I'm going to avoid one of these completely. Seems to be far too many problems for a £600+ screen.

Irrespective of cost you'll never get a 0% failure rate. No matter what you buy you're always have something go wrong somewhere, it just so happens now more people have this monitor you're starting to hear of the faults, read through the whole thread, you're unlucky if you get something wrong.

Wouldn't let 1 page out of 116 deter you from buying :o

Very true that. Mine has been flawless, as have many others but there has been a couple of duds but that wouldn't put me off, especially with the service you get from OcUK.

I got mine at the weekend. One big issue - the screen seems grainy, like there's a layer of something on the glass, its quite distracting. Is this normal? My older TN panel monitor didn't have this.

I have to say (though I am fairly used to matte screens) I don't really notice the Swift being that grainy. (Seen that levelled at it quite a bit but I honestly don't see it with mine).

How do you force 144Hz for certain apps etc? I'm either being thick or missing something =/

Clicking the 2nd button up from the bottom should do it. (Other than that you'd have to do it through the control panel for your video drivers if supported).

It has a matte screen, like an anti glare coating.
Guessing your last screen was a glossy one?

hmm no the Acer HN274H also has a matte screen, but I never noticed this. I guess the swift has a thicker layer? Just read the pcmonitors article and it seems you are right though, it must be the matte coating. It's quite distracting on light colours, dang the monitor is so nice in every other way...

Sometimes this panel is a bit too smooth - hard to explain unless you "get it" but I'm kind of used to sort of resisting against the slight unevenness as a kind of tactile feedback and you don't get that at all with this monitor.

Aside from that I wish there was more options for playing with the gamma from the OSD I find it hard to fault.

Assuming there are games/apps that you want to run <144hz then you can use the nvidia control panel, 3d settings and adjust the refresh rate there. There is a related issue with nvidia gpus where you will see high idle clocks when running 144hz so many of us have set the monitor @ 120hz and then forced 144hz in game.

Perfect thanks, will have a play around tonight.

i'm using the below registry "hack" to force 120Hz refresh rate at all times, on desktop as well as in games. had to google this, because some stupid update to planetside2 started forcing 144Hz in the game regardless of desktop refresh rate and regardless of the nvcp setting. until SOE gets their **** together and lets us choose the refresh rate in the game, i have to resort to this. works like a charm though :)

Code:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
|
+-Software
   | |
   | +-Microsoft
   | |
   | +-DirectDraw
   | | |
   |     |  +->ForceRefreshRate
   | | [DWORD value (REG_DWORD): Set this to the refresh rate you wish to
   | | force for DirectX games. This is analogous to forcing the refresh
   | | rate in Windows using dxdiag as described in KB315614 (main article),
   | | KB230002, and KB217348. If this key does not exist, the default
   | | refresh rate will be used.]

I wish you stick on a PS4 and a XBOX1 on this, it's the only think stopping me from getting on, Currently i have PC, PS4 & XBOX1 on my current monitor but want to upgrade

Naah, for a console you should use a Tv mate, thats what my 50 Plasma Tv is for ;)
I have an old PS3 with the Cobra ODE and a WiiU and will definetly buy a PS4 soon, just wish they had some more good exclusives out by now (In my personal opinion) :)

But come next year we should have a new Uncharted and maybe The Order 1886 will be a good game. But until then I dont see the point to get a PS4 just yet, again in my opinion :)

GSYNC would do nothing on a console, most games would be capped at 60Hz if you are lucky, and do consoles go over 1080p?. This is not a good value choice for a console.

Gregster..quick question if you dont mind.

I am still using the Asus VG278H, as i recall you have one too...am just about to pull the trigger on the swift and wondered how it compared in overall day to day picture quality, browsing and movies etc to the VG278H?

I don't want it for GSYNC, i just to get an image on it so i can use it alone with my PC. i just need the next monitors to also have 2 HDMI ports on it
