The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

I think I'm doing something noobish but haven't quite nailed what it is. I've been running 120hz ULMB in black ops 2 multiplayer but thought I'd have a go at
144hz G-Sync. I seem to be getting Input lag? The red light is on, gsync on in the cp and vsync off in game. I' ve also got it set to on in the games 3D profile in the CP. It looks amazing, weird to see what games look like when not tearing! But something amiss, it feels mushy?

G-sync doesn't totally rule out input lag unfortunately, but does improve on vsync.

They say locking the framerate solved the CSGO problem...

If a G-SYNC monitor reaches the frame rate ceiling (144fps for example) then it acts as if V-SYNC is on. You get the same latency penalty as a result. In a variable refresh environment (30-143fps) the module uses its 'lookaside buffer' which adds perhaps a couple of ms of latency on top of V-SYNC off. G-SYNC doesn't really benefit users where the frame rate ceiling can commonly be reached, although any little dips below that are free from tearing and stuttering and have lower latency than V-SYNC on.

Some users have reported the mouse feeling a bit odd with G-SYNC on and indeed the sensitivity changing a bit with the refresh rate fluctuations. Personally I found it fine but this may be causing some issues as well?

That's true. There is a good post over at blurbusters on the input of external framerate caps and input lag. I have locked my fps in BF4 config @ 135.

Any news on any potential gaming monitors coming out to rival this one? Won't be able to get one/ an alternative until Feb!

So now people have had this monitor for a while, what are their opinions (now the 'new toy' effect has worn off)?

Running 3 graphics cards on air gets a bit toasty so I'm thinking of shelving my 4K monitor for a little while and selling 1 of my 980s. Hoping that I'll be able to run 1440p @ 144Hz ok with 2 x 980s and not have to worry about VRAM being an issue.

What are people's experiences with this? Will 2 x 980s be enough?
Is the monitor really that good?

Only thing I've noticed on those lines so far which is a little hard to explain but seems I've gotten used to using the slight variances as some kind of tactile feedback mechanism especially for FPS gaming but with gsync its so smooth that has gone which feels a bit odd at first.

It doesn't have quite the wow factor of a 4K resolution (might somewhat be due to being fairly used to 2560x though I mostly gamed at 1920x before) but the actual gaming experience IMO is a different league with the clarity and responsiveness no 4K panel can currently match.

Best monitor I have ever owned and so glad I got it. No way I could go back to non G-Sync gaming in truth and the difference is fantastic.

Best monitor I ever owned I run 2 x 980 and it's perfect g-sync is great and I'm finding no stuttering in games like I used to have on amd cards

Watchdogs has some weird artefacts but that games rubbish anyway !!

Is this with the user.cfg rather than MSI AB? Can you let me know the command again? ;) Been a while

Yes, just add gametime.maxvariablefps in config. Here's my config:

GameTime.MaxVariableFps 135
PerfOverlay.DrawFps 1
RenderDevice.TripleBufferingEnable 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurEnable 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurFixedShutterTime 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurForceOn 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurMax 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurMaxSampleCount 0
WorldRender.MotionBlurQuality 0
WorldRender.PlanarReflectionEnable 0
WorldRender.SpotLightShadowmapEnable 0

I dont know if anyone missed it or not but Asus did a world first 2000hz polling rate update to the ROG Gladius a few weeks or days ago. And anyone using ULMB might want to read the blurbusters article on polling rate and ULMB.

Personally im going to give it a go but wont be able to compare to 1000hz. But i trust blurbusters and always thought the mouse in windows was a mess as times. Anything to squeeze out extra smoothness like not using SLI, ULMB 120/144hz and 2000hz ill try!

Thanks for the replies, i'm hitting the 200fps limit in Black Ops 2 so that's why i'm getting the v-sync effect? I've gone back to ULMB for this game as it's spot on for me.

I'll leave G-Sync for the more demanding stuff in future.

No I CAN hit 200fps in BO2, but wasn't sure why I was getting the g-sync lag issue at 144hz, I'm assuming that's why? I was hitting 144fps easily. By going down to 120hz, ulmb, v-sync off, I don't get it.

Try limiting BO2 to 135 in the BO2 config with GSYNC on.

ULMB should feel snappier but not as smooth as GSYNC.

Cheers, will give that a go. I've got the choice of 120 or Unlimited in game so I suppose the cfg will be a text file somewhere in the game folder. I think it's based on the Q3 engine so should be straightforward.

Yeh it may be worth just setting it up via in game console at first to see if it resolves the lag you are getting. I do know what you mean though regarding ULMB vs GSYNC. If you can maintain really high framerates ULMB will feel super snappy. I spent a few weeks changing between ULMB and GSYNC. I think both modes have their merits but I found that I preferred the super smooth gameplay to ULMB in the end - perhaps because I was not able to always maintain 135fps.
