The Asus ROG SWIFT PG278Q – a 27” 1400p 144Hz Monitor with G-SYNC

Just got the swift today and I am quite impressed with it. No backlight bleed unlike the XB280HK 4k monitor. Screen looks lovely. One thing I have noticed is the XB280HK looks a lot sharper particular with the text and Windows does scale it better.

I also wondered do people generally set it to 144mhz with g sync enabled?

Gotta be honest I run mine at 120Hz most of the time - for various reasons. I only enable gsync in certain games.

My gut instinct is that these panels are being pushed to the max at 144Hz exposing any weakness in panels that are less than 110% robust that would otherwise be fine with 120Hz which is my theory for the failures though I might be completely wrong. I don't see any difference personally between 120Hz and 144Hz in terms of response or smoothness and 144Hz has some motion artefacts that completely go away at 120 - so I'm treating it as a 120Hz panel and couldn't be happier with it as long as it doesn't die heh.

Ordered one today, is a single Gigabyte GTX980 G1 overclocked enough to benefit with this monitor?

Or do you think it's worth selling up the 980 and going SLI 970 for a bit more money.

Depends what frame rates you want. High refresh rate monitors shine when running at high frame rates. GSync may smooth it out between low frame rate games, but if you play a lot of FPS you want as much as you can get.

Gsync makes one 780ti (roughly same as 970/80) a very pleasurable experience on this monitor for many games. It really does need to be seen to be believed does gsync.
But, having said that, 2x 780tis is even nicer ;) and you won't be hitting 120fps at 120hz on one card in many games, that's for sure.

Not sure why we don't hear much about the Acer Predator 4k monitor on here, seems better for value, surprised there isn't any threads like this one about it.

My Swift has finally died today, to top off a completely **** day..

The only way to use it is to wait until it powers itself on, then turn my pc on to keep the monitor on..

I suppose this is another Asus return saga that I'm about to embark upon?

Because for serious gaming it doesn't come close to the experience of having 120+Hz and the real pixel response time/clarity in motion of the ROG.

I've definitely noticed mine is giving a cross hatch type thing on the image during fast movement, not always there but noticeable when it appears, anyone else getting this? am I witnessing the infamous screen door effect perhaps?

Fully agree - 144hz 2560x1440 > 60hz 4k For gaming.

Just wondered if any of you above have tried the Acer Predator 4k or gamed on 4k for an exensive amount of time ? Mine is currently back for repair and I am using a Rog Swift and I must admit the Predator has a much better screen. Whether its the 4k resolution or not it is a lot sharper and clearer than the Swift. I cant seem to get the font scaling right on the Swift it just appears to be slightly off and the images are just not as clear. The image quality is definitely poorer on the Rog. I've also noticed the screen on the Rog is a little "cloudy" not sure how to explain it but when you look at a white screen its not completely white its almost like you are looking through a very light speckled grey fog.

Unfortunately I have not been able to compare side by side yet but I played Borderlands prequel and COD AW completed on the Predator and the gaming experience was incredible. Everything on full but with no AA. I didnt really notice that much difference in fluid motion being an issue. Dont forget the Predator has g-sync too.

I`m just really contemplating getting rid of the swift when the Predator comes back if they fix the backlight bleed on it as in my opinion its a superior panel.

I think this is the effect that EVERYONE with a Rog swift gets, in certain games and at certain times (light background, fast movement generally).

I get it a bit, occasionally.

Perhaps some have it worse than others, but I think it's more down to the fact that some people 'notice' things more than others, and have a more perceptive, critical eye.
I'm sure I read on here that it's a feature, or rather drawback of 144hz fast panels, and it happens on other makes too, not just the swift.

this is inversion artefacts, rather than screendoor
it happens when panels are being driven further than they really like to be - like 144hz
as Rroff has said a few times, if you run the panel at more like 120hz it doesn't happen (or isn't so apparent) so effectively this is a 120hz panel that is being overdriven to 144

there's very few games I can get a solid 144hz @ 1440 anyway, so I've not noticed this happening at all, as all my games seem to fluctuate from 80-130ish fps at the moment
I run the panel set to 144, but with gsync I'm not getting much past 130hz/fps anyway

Thanks wunkle/Andy, that's put my mind at rest. It's happening in Black Ops 2 which can easily hit 144fps so that'll be why.

Just been looking at the PC Per report on the ASUS MG279Q (120hz IPS), seems it's going to be $599! At that price I might get one and keep the Swift too.

What's the deal with all the power issues the ROG Swift monitor is having. Mine won't power back on from sleep or PC power unless I unplug it from the brick, wait 10s and plug it back in...I sent the below to the """"VIP"""" ASUS customer support;

They replied promptly that I have to either send the whole monitor in for an RMA or contact the retailer for a spare powerbrick. I did that and the retailer couldn't help either and suggested I RMA everything. Seems messed up for a £700 monitor that's less than 6 months old.

I have the same problem except the monitor will also turn itself on and off when not in use. I suspect power brick because it makes a louder than usual spark when plugging the clover-leaf cable into it.

Needless to say I can't RMA it in this state - They'll plug it in, see it works and call me a liar. I'm waiting for the whole thing to completely die before I RMA it.

I just got one of these today! i noticed no Display port included :D

Then i notice my connection on my Palit GeForce GTX 980 Super JetStream has smaller connection

Still says DisplayPort in the Specification, but looks different.

sorry i've just been using HDMI and DVI cables till now :D so i'm behind times

So What connection do i need :D

Cheers :)
