Just got an email from a friend who works for the local council - he was processing a "exemption from Council tax claim" from a family, and part of this detailed their yearly income. They are 2 adults and 6 children who "cannot work".

25k in Housing Benefit a year
4k in Child Benefit a year
£12k in Child Tax Credits a year
£6k in Incapacity Benefit a year

£47,000 per year out of Government coffers. They don't pay council tax, sewerage etc.

I find this an utter scandal - that £47,000 per year equates to the full tax contributions of about 15 people earning £20k odd a year.

They have an 8-bed country house?

£12k in CTC doesn't sound right, sure that isn't income support?

Just wait till you see the admin costs though...

Watching GMTV before i went to work this week and i am ashamed to say they where reporting on my town it is the worst place in Europe for Incapacity Benefit "Merthyr Tydfil" I work 7 days a week to pay Joe Bloggs beer money.

That's pretty crap really - I imagine HB is swallowed up in rent, leaving £22k to feed, clothe and support a family of 6. Not exactly going to be living the dream life... :p

Merthyr Tydfil is the highest proportion of people claiming incapacity benefit, according to a new report.

A total of 20.5% of working age people in Merthyr Tydfil

Oh im so proud of my local area :(

Yes, the figures are correct.

Noticed you're in Scotland...that probably explains it.

As Rich_L says, thats not a great deal when you consider 8 people have to live on the £22k. Much as I dislike the current administering of welfare, this isn't the best case to use against it.

Wow, your mate sounds professional. Emailing his friends confidential data.

I can't see any personally identifiable information there...

Maybe one of them works? He didn't give me specific details about the people, other than "2 adults, 6 children, not working" .. maybe only one works?
