The best car for £5000? I think so..would you?

Agree with R134

The 728i is a top buy. This kind of car isn't about scaring yourself silly with mental 0-60 times. Anything <10s is respectable and the 2.8L 6 in the 728i is a really nice engine.

R134? :D ;)

You can still scare yourself silly in an e38, its called too fast into a tight bend, not that a professional driver such as I would ever admit to such antics. Ahem. :D

This is exactly why i have definately not disregarded the 728, the reason i seem to be looking at very few of them is simply down to equipment levels as i mentioned earlier.

Isnt R134(A) a fridge gas? I swear i had my vapochill regassed to that :p

Avoid any car older than 1996 as these had the old 4.0 and 3.0 M60 engines which had horrendous problems.

My Dad ran a '95 730i from 1998-2004ish and the engine was fine though maybe he was lucky.

The car itself was fantastic, interior still looked mint at 130k though it did start to develop a number of niggling faults after 120k which was the only reason that I didn't buy it off him after he was offered £3k in part exchange. He got the car serviced at a specialist rather than a main dealer and it cost him less to maintain than his Honda Accord (main dealer).

750 would probably be a step too far for me but a 740 would be lovely.

Anyone noticed Rilot's 750i on eBay? Could be a good buy... if it's a dog, the unlucky purchaser could shout at him via the forums. Prevents all that nasty face to face unpleasantness and black eyes.

How did they get around the steering issue with the M5?

I think its a combination of different engine mounts in the (e39) M5, not to mention a different engine!

It's Fiona's actually. No longer being used so it's going away.

They didn't, the M5 is recirculating-ball, just with the addition of Servotronic.

I didn't know that.

My 540i had Servotronic. That must make the M5 steering feel similar. That's dissappointing.

The 540i didn't have the same servotronic, it has PAS linked to the revs iirc but not the speed sensitive servotronic the M has. The M also has 2 modes, normal is very light (similar to the 540) and Sport is considerably heavier... I never drive mine in normal mode, I think it's far too light.

The quick-ratio power steering has a 14.7:1 overall ratio and M Servotronic power assist. Compared to the engine-speed-sensitive variable assist of lesser 5 Series cars, the M5's system varies power assist according to vehicle speed. The system is calibrated for a firm road feel and the recirculating-ball steering gear has an automatic pressure-point adjustment that eliminates free play in the straight-ahead position. The result is precision comparable to that of rack-and-pinion steering while retaining what BMW says is the superior suppression of road shocks offered by the recirculating-ball mechanism.

Not my words ;)

I don't think anyone can really claim that RB is as good as RnP for performance cars, but a good RB isn't that far off. RB does have the advantage of being able to shield the driver a lot more from the road if that's what the type of car needs.. and in the V8 E39's case it has the massive advantage of not having the rack dragging along the floor while you drive :D

The new M5 is RnP as it was designed from the start to have an engine that large.

As for a review, I could do, but as I'm coming up on 2 years and still can't find anything as good to replace it, I think you can guess it might be quite positive :)
