The best game developers...

Sega Racing Studio.. of course!

But closely followed by:

VALVE
Radical
Rockstar North (none of the others)
Blizzard (if they stop making WoW)
Monolith
Creative Assembley

Some others..

COD 4 is a highly rated game it has one fo the best stories in recent years

Ahahahahahahahaha haha ha....

Seriously are you claiming that a game based around the player acting as a anti terrorist special ops person and fighting 3rd world terrorists and other people holding hostages is a good and original story?

Didn't rainbow 6 and there previous games do EXACTLY the same?

You are claiming HL2 is bad for fanboyism, yet your spouting rubbish about CoD4 being the second coming of Christ.

He didn't say it was original. It WAS very good though and implemented far better than the majority of other games released in the past year. R6 pales in comparison to the style which COD4 told its story.

I'm assuming by 'best developers' you don't mean devs today, but rather devs who were great at some point in time. In that case I have to say guys like the Bitmap Brothers and Westwood :D

Firstly do yourself a favour and adjust your attitude. This is a games forum and all comments are valid - if you dont agree fine but there is no need to behave like a retard.

Cod 4 had a massive impact and a great story I did not say original (as if you could even remotely say that the half life ep2 story was original after TWO previous sequels and the original story dating back to 1998 LOL :p)- however tried and tested got there first with that particular retort. The gameplay was extremely orignal in places - I dont know about you but i was blown away when playing the plane/night vision level and all the way through all ghuilled up...thats real innovation and it made the game special.

As a measure of my point of view I think we can all agree there were many more posts about Cod 4 than Ep2 in this forum and many others i have visited along with better reviews.

As for your final sentence.. just do yourself a favour and take a look at yourself.

Valve
Epic
Relic
BioWare

All great developers but don't make me list them in any order of preference :p

In my eyes when you want the best you can't look at one single title, you have to look at a RANGE of titles and how they support them and if the developer shows ability to think outside the box and dare to make a leap of faith into its own abilities.

FOR THESE REASONS:

  1. Nintendo HAVE TO TOP THE BEST DEVELOPERS EVER!!! (Who the hell else PERSISTENTLY makes all round good games?)
  2. Capcom (They have got to be up there with Nintendo for range and quality)
  3. Blizzard (Whilst they have only produced three very similar titles....WoW, Diablo and Starcraft = Enough said)
  4. Relic (Because they have the balls to go that little bit further and present it in such as way that it WORKS)
  5. Valve (Innovative and ground breaking are words you HAVE TO use to describe them)
  6. BioWare (Brilliant at what they do)
  7. ID (Where would we be without ID?)

1) ubisoft, im a long time ghost recon, rainbow six and splinter cell fan, so ubisoft are my dudes!

2) gas powered games, supreme commander was awesome, end of really

3) relic, dawn of war, company of heroes, enough said really

4) crytek, far cry and crysis are two of the best (IMO) and two of my favourite all time FPS

not listing valve because i like no half-life games, always found them a bit boring, CS is too full of bunny hopping idiots :p

id are without a doubt the best developers. They seem to be able to make engines which graphically are way ahead of their time, and they spend ages making sure everything is perfect.

Sure, they are very small, but there are clipping issues in HL2. There are absolutely none in Doom 3 or Quake 4, and to this day they're still both immense games (Doom 3 was so so so far ahead graphically at it's release).

[Edit] I'd just like to add a mention to Microsoft, who also seem to make very well polished games - Freelancer or AOE anyone? Both great games.

Couldn't agree more :) Remember folks, it's not the story, it's how you tell it :p

Are we listing publishers or developers?

EA is naff (nice way of putting it), purely as they use their marketing potential but don't back up with a good product or good support. After iteration 10 of said product it isn't exactly hard to think about how to design iteration 11 per se.

Case in point BF series. It isn't them that develop it, design it, it is just their money a lot of the time. It is still buggy, they lack the support it should get and don't make the expansion packs worthwhile beyond new models and new maps and try to charge you 2/3's the original price of the game for a quick knock up with each expansion rather than fixing the original issues. What a load of crud. This divides the playing community as well so the experience is lost and servers are harder to find with good players etc.

So no... ea suck.

Valve... take to long to deliver but eventually do. Bit like AMD, talk the talk but take ages to walk the walk. I still think they could have (and should have) done a lot better with the source engine. Good games developer over all.

Infinity Ward> Comes up with some real gems that pretty much run well (Read: Smoothly) and look good no matter settings you choose. Really goes with what the community is looking for. Feel they can get boxed in though, and really need to push the envelope a bit however.

SOE> Bring out good games, but has a habit of shooting themselves in the foot, a bit like EA really. Case in point: Planetside. Should have been monumental, and as for a while, but really screwed it up. Failed to fix basic issues, before trying to palm off expansions. Then really screwed it up with the segregation of the planets malarky. What the heck was that, talk about loosing their way.

Blizzard> Hope to see more games from them, but for the moment I'm sure they are just sat on milking as much as possible from WoW. Bring out fantastic game play products, a bit like the bit map brothers used to do back in the day, just need to polish up on the delivery of expected other titles.

Rockstar> Weak. It's easy to sell a 'bad boy' title when the advertising is heavy, and makes it seem cool. They sell their titles on controversy, so I rate it down their with Jerry Springer. Trash developer. If they actually decided to make a proper title I would definately be interested however.

There are loads of others I haven't mentioned but are listed in this thead. None are perfect, and those that are get lost in their own glory and occasionally come back to planet earth and make a blinding title. Others are one hit wonders.

Valve prob has to win it though purely down to market penetration with proper games, although they are currently in the sequel spiral and in danger of not getting out. I would like to see more cross company developments, stories from one company and coding/graphics from another. Crysis looked good but the scripting was awful and not very convincing. I haven't even tried the multiplayer lol.
