i think criteria for our OCUK hot hatch favourite should be changed to the following
1.FWD Only
2.No HOMO-SPECIALS (lol) examples inculde Nissan Pulsar's Lancia Deltas,Cossies (although this would discount a 306 s16 sadly)
3.also **** the list
let the battles begin,
any one argree or would like to add to what i have said?

I agree, but I would also put needs to have been officially sold in this country.

My vote for the revy 205 gti 1.6

There's something terribly wrong about a picture of a Nissan Almera beside the words "The best hot hatch ever".

the nissan almera vzr n1 is most proberly my favourite hatch ever. it was a direct competitor to the ek9 type-r and then some. at one point it had the highest n/a bhp per litre in the world for a production car.

as far as ukdm hatches go the 205 gti is my favourite oldskool hatch followed by the ep3 civic for the modern era.

For the 80's / 90's had to be 205GTi or R5. Nothing ever came close, certainly nothing from VW. The GTi was a complete lard back then.

Always had a soft spot for the 309 GTi 3 door too

Why are people voting the 205 gti 1.6 instead of the 1.9?

205 gti 1.9, but then my mrs owns one so I am bias.

You should try driving both. The weight of the 1.9 engine block had an impact upon handling. Additionally, the 1.6 was only 15hp behind on power and delivered it in a fizzy and fun way. Don't get me wrong, the 1.9 was definitely faster, but somehow didn't make you smile quite as much.

As for the 309, nope, that was simply a more lardy 205 1.9, and had the most hideous facia of any of hot hatches at the time (and bearing in mind you're talking about 80s plastic naffness, that's not a good start).

Ref the 5GTT, my uncle owned one. Hoot to drive, but I'd still put money on the Corolla GT.

205gti and for more modern times the 172 cup which was the last hatch to get away without any of the driver aids. I feel sorry for kids who are too young and never grew up driving the great 80s and early 90s hot hatches, before the dark ages in the mid 90s, when they virtually all dried up and we ended up with luke warm barges. The saxo vts and r were good for the nostalgic few until abused by chavs.

The escort cosworth et al were amazing but a different league and for most totally uninsureable. My wifes uncle has a mint hardly used escort cosworth which sits in his garage.

If it was there 309gti16, fantastic car and better than the 205 which my brother had, you could throw it into a corner and it would just take it, never did i lose control of that car awesome handling.

Though i am rather biased. ;)

The 309 was simply easier to drive than the 205 and didn't have the same amount of snappyness that inflicted the 205 but it was not as good becuase of it in my book. Like to 106 after it once you got use to the rear end of the 205 off the throttle it was ace fun and part of it's charm!

Lotus Sunbeam gets my vote

I was thinking that, but I think we're all missing the point.

I've always thought the whole point of a hot hatch was they were accessible. Not much more expensive then a standard car, but more fun.

It should be someone's first 'fast' car.

You should look ridiculous in one if you're over the age of 25.

So my nomination is I car I hate, a car that has a bad reputation, a car that isn't even the quickest car in the range. Oh and it's a Citroen.

I think we all know where this is going.

It's got to be the Saxo VTR.

The fact it wasn't just that it easier to drive fast that made it more fun for me but the fact that it was easy enough to hang the arse out round roundabouts without crashing and dying :) It was just very predictable and you could feel exactly what it was going to do, the 205 always felt more like it was going to do what it wanted to do. Even the basic 1.3 309 I borrowed from a mate for a bit was great fun.

In fact this thread has made me want one again, if only for a little while.

Since when was a purpose built 2 seater Group B Homologation special a hot hatch. Especially the Evo version with over 500bhp...

If you can't fit four people plus luggage or two people with a chest of drawers in the boot it's not a hot hatch.
