The big RPG problem.

Like an above poster I have high hopes for Dragon Age - Ill be looking for a great blend of storytelling and gameplay that I havent seen since BG2.

Bethesda intended for the community to add to Oblivion (and indeed Morrowind for that matter). It's the reason why they provided tools to do exactly that.

If you think the point of Oblivion was just to focus the main story and you didn't tinker with any of the community built mods available, and were unhappy as a result, then I'll take this opportunity to remind you that you still owe me £50 for the laminated osprey housing I built at the foot of your pond.

But some people have questioned whether or not Bethesda released the game half finished and expected the modding community to "finish" the job.

RPGs tend to be more "casual" friendly these days due to market forces...or so the men in suits would have you believe.

The Witcher was a nice buck to that trend, one of the best none party based rpgs in recent years in the more traditional style, although I have enjoyed Fallout 3 and to a certain extent Oblivion also (with mods that dispense with some of the dumbed down/shallow gameplay). Also, main storyline has never been the big attraction for Bethesda games, they really are sandbox/adventure hybrids with rpg elements....its all about the freedom to go where you want.

Anything that is multiformat should be avoided unless there is modding potential on the PC version, ala Bethesda games. Because a Western RPG made for console is usually aimed squarely at the casual market. Hardcore indepth PC rpgs are a rare thing these days...

I didn;t mention the mob scaling, i just said i though the way in which you leveled was fantastic.

No one is disputing the skill based leveling system, thats probably the single best way to level in a RPG.

Its more the fact that it took like 2 hours in fallout 3 to hit max level, oblivion had a soft level cap which was very easy to reach in around 8 hours game play and so follows the trend.

True, but so what? Make the game your own. The tools are there for you to do it. Yes, the default levelling system is indeed awful. Change it.

You play/played WoW, right? Imo, the default UI sucks. But the modders that design some of the addons breathes new life into WoW for many people. Try to see the TES construction kit as something similar.

What do you expect if you rush through like that? I had played fallout 3 for a good 40 hours before i reached the max level because i took the game easy and explore, found stuff out for myself rather then just doing quest after quest.

I did exactly the same as you, apart from i'm what they call a hardcore gamer. Meaning i spend a lot of time playing a game. Rather then 2-4 hours in between home work.

I think a first person, skill based BG2 with modern graphics would completely rip apart the RPG industy.

yes - first person view maybe to play more like Mirrors Edge style as well.

ive done a ULTIMATE RPG post before on here but what the hell ill do it again...

And Realism lots of realism Ultima + Morrowind levels of realism/depth. The Story Depth/richness of Planescape + BG

Physical touches

i want to eat, sleep, ***, shag. I want to grow a beard, grow old, get scars on wounds. Have the chance of losing eyes/legs/arms in fights. Take drugs/alcohol and seeing a messed up view enhanced vision and other attributes.

Interaction

I want to be able to join an adventuring band (and become leader of it and also possible to get kicked out of it if i do stuff contrary to the alignment group)e.g. im a mercenary and i help this person out and it turns out to be a mahoosive quest related thing with lots of major characters involved and you meet them in game on the way. (e.g. Lord of the rings, the belgariad, Dragonlance, Shannara basically epic style quests)

I want endless deserts, frozen wastes of the north, lush forests, underground cities/labyrinths, vast oceans, i want my shoes to wear out, i want to get heatstroke and my vision to be affected travelling deserts, i want betrayal, death and armies of darkness invading towns. So basically you could be sitting at a tavern having a beer when X army starts burning the town to the ground. 1000+ of them so what do you do? try to fight em all? NO you RUN. and try escape to a safe haven whilst trying to continue with the quest.

I want an rpg where its about surviving, the characters, the drama not ohh "i gotta get to level 99 and get that +30 sword blah"

Real RPG greatness aint about the Loot :p

We had a similar convo at work the other regarding LOTRO & WoW.

I feel the worst thing they could have done with RPG is to add levels, instead a skills based structure like that in Ultima Online or SWG Pre.

But tbh, nothing beats the RP depth and fun of good old fashioned paper & dice roleplaying.

Old world of darkness system along with L5R's were immense:D

This is why I was so disappointed by Shadowrun.

They go and turn from of favourite pencil & paper RPGs into a crap FPS!

Vampire managed a decent 'port' from dice and books version to game, why can't they do the same for Shadowrun? And Mechwarrior for that matter!

I spent so many years playing the real AD&D, Vampire, Mechwarrior and Shadowrun... and only 2 of them have made decent pc games :(

Personally, I couldn't get into RPGs for ages. I tried with KotOR and Dues Ex but they just didn't appeal. The first RPG I completed with Mass Effect and I think that was only because of the production values. I'm steadily making my way through Fallout 3 at present but the quest system does feel a bit samey - "go here, fetch that, dispatch them, etc". I'm sure I'm just afflicted with some unique antiRPG illness...

LOL, dont assume you know how often i play. That 40 hours of fallout 3 playtime was in the first 5 or so days of release. Yes i could have got max level much sooner if i wanter to, but why would i want to do that? Rushing to the max level is not the point of the game. I spent my time enjoying the game instead of rushing it, and so i have no problems with the leveling system.

I just think its silly that the developers give you a massive world to explore to enjoy, and you rush through it as fast as you can then complain it was too short.

Meh, I've tried to stay clear of any games ported from the paper games i play or used to play, always seem to dissapoint.

But now who is assuming? Your saying i rushed, yet i just explained i did the same as you did. So are you admitting your rushed the game?

Regardless i'd spend like 8am till 1-2am playing the game for about 4-5 days straight.

So if you say you played it the same as i did and just took it easy while playing. Whats the problem? I would say 40 hours to max level is a decent ammount. Most games these days usualy have no more then 24 hours of content.
